Financing Terrorism 3.0
Over the past 5 years, I’ve spent a great deal of time reading and writing about the War against Islamic terrorism, with special emphasis on exposing the myths of the religion of peace™, as well as pounding the keyboard exposing and criticizing their willing accomplices on the political left. Looking back, one area in which I have not spent a great deal of time, is in understanding the business aspects of terror cells.
As most small businessmen understand, the lifeblood of a successful business is money. Specifically, that boils down to cash flow, and the ready availablity of affordable capital (borrowing). It’s really no different for a terror cell (with the obvious differences of producing death and mayhem as both a mission statement and product/service instead of a legitimate product/service with necessary transparency and oversight). Terror cells, as a business, require the ready availability of cash, and sufficient cash flow to support daily operations.
The Bush Administration has generally received good reviews for their efforts to freeze terrorist assets, with the understanding that much still needs to be done. For example, as Rachel Ehrenfeld reveals on the Terror Finance Blog, unless regulators intervene, obtaining the necessary cash for a terror cell may be just a few simple keystrokes away for anyone with a cell phone:
The GSM Association, the mobile telephone operator trade body, announced that 19 mobile phone companies will allow more than “600 million customers in over 100 countries,” to use their cell phones to transfer money internationally. “The system will allow a person to put cash onto their mobile, and order it to be sent to a mobile phone number abroad, where the recipient receives a text message saying that money has arrived.”
“The system will allow a person to put cash onto their mobile, and order it to be sent to a mobile phone number abroad, where the recipient receives a text message saying that money has arrived… the initiative could double the number of recipients of international remittances to more than 1.5 billion.” This new initiative, which is said to help migrant workers to send money to their families, would undoubtedly defeat most efforts to identify the users and follow the money trail. A terrorist dream comes true.
On a final note, isn’t it interesting that a terror cell’s cash flow dream is being marketed as a way to help migrant workers to send money to their families? I suppose that includes illegal immigrant workers as well. This makes BofA’s decision last week to issue credit cards to illegal immigrants even more alarming. Now those very same borrowed funds will be theoreticaly available to be sent across the borders. Cash flow + ready availability of capital. Somebody please wake me up and tell me I’m dreaming.

Take Note: “Migrant Worker” is the new word for Illegal Alien. Just as Insurgent took over Terrorist. Media spin.
Seems to be a whole passel of bad dreams these days.
Still, I see this type of transaction as being quite easy to track, intercept, or even redirect. What if this new method isn’t currently covered by any existing surveillance practices or FISA court areas of jurisdiction? If people can use scanners and intercept cell phone ESN’s and phone numbers, for the production of cloned chips, I can see scanners being able to intercept this info and making a ton of money, or denying it to illegal aliens or terrorist.
It also draws attention to the abuse of disposable telephones. Untraceable, use once then dispose.
And cheap too. We just bought a couple of new Tracphones for $15 ea. at Safeway.
Knock It Off Nuke! That eye popping up there was a bit startling.
There are always risks, living in a free society. That our enemies, both home grown, and from abroad, have always used our system against our best interest.
Danged ol’throwaway phones have always been a problem, including IED’s.
I use the prepaid phone because of the cost of the plans and phones with the networks. I don’t need a contract, I don’t need IM or a camera. I need a phone that makes and accepts calls. Also, I don’t talk to a lot of people, and the phone sits idle for a long time in the winter, so it’s perfect for my wife and I. If they need to do something for security, well, that may be.
looking for just the right photo.
I don’t need all the fancy-fied chit either, but I do have to have a cell phone, as I no longer have a land-line. My cell phone is everything, work and personal, and whenever I want a new one, I just go to ‘younevercall’, get a free one from my carrier, and sign a new contract for two years. I never run out of minutes, and spend less than fifty bucks a year.
Need some help with a pic, nuke?
/henh
Wow N2L! Who’s the carrier?
Cingular.
Dang…make that fifty bucks a month!
BRB…need dessert.
Dang…make that fifty bucks a month!
OK then….nevermind.
Henh, how much do you spend on a land-line and throwaway cell phones?
Once I asked the question, do I really need a land-line, and answered no, it saved me about sixty bucks, dropped the D-Up for another ten bucks, and got 8mps broadband for thirty five, and already had the cell, so I saved money, and cut out one very annoying apparatus in my life. I mean, hearing the answering machine recording a sales pitch at 3a.m., while I was trying to sleep, was the final straw.
No cell coverage here. No choice.
I need the fax-line. can you fax from a cell phone?
Oh, and the cells are not “throw away” normally. ATT/Cingular made an upgrade and made my cellphone obsolete.
I don’t think you can fax on a cell, don’t know really, but you could fax to your ‘puter.
Basically, all cell phones are throw aways, anymore. They keep coming out with new ones, making the last fiscal quarters phone obsolete.
One thing I will never do, is get one of those cell phone, pda, blacktooth thingies. I only know of two people that have, and they were both unhappy with them, especially the phone reception quality.
Or I could have said ‘Sadr’ teeth.
Yep, aint dem sum beutys?
You think he has a ‘Black’tooth phone?

Benefits of Owning a Cellular Phone
This is not a new line to let go of but we could totally say that Cellular phones are very popular everywhere. No matter what the age of an individual is, it is indeed now a need instead of just a want. Cellular phones are in demand not just because they are necessary for communications but because this seems to be one of the hippest possessions especially for the young people.
Cellular phones come in different models and varied features that would surely be of great help to users depending on their needs and depending on the way the cellular phone features meet the standards of the users. There are benefits that could be derived from owning a cellular phone, there may be some disadvantages from them but it is beyond denial that cellular phones are really useful and they have influenced us more access, more technology and more mobility.
There are numbers of benefits that we could really get from owning a cellular phone but there are three of the most dominant benefits:
This is very useful in case of emergencies
-With a cellular phone, you could contact people as fast as you could without letting the situation get even worse. Through cellular phones, it would be easier for people to respond to unexpected cases that may happen to them along the way. Without cellular phones, the transfer of information would be slow and would also produce slow outcomes.
This could lead you to the right direction
-While traveling in a new place, it is natural that a person may get lost or lose the right direction. With a cellular phone, it would be possible for you to find the right direction. As we are all aware of, there is that locator feature now that could be enjoyed by users. There is also an option that could be very helpful for kids and parents. For example, by accident, a kid gets lost, parents could trace the location.
This could let you help others especially when they are in the middle of an emergency. Through this, you could selflessly open your hand and lend a help. This is a great help to a community for it does build bridges among people. And, this is what the essence of communication is. Building bridges instead of walls.
These are the three major benefits of owning a cellular phone. These are big advantages if you own one. It would be plus points if you could get a good model or a good brand.
