Huckabee withdraws from Carter confab

Q: What do former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, Senators Lindsay Graham (S.C.) and Charles Grassley (Iowa), former President Jimmy Carter, former President Bill Clinton, former vice president Al Gore, and journalist and author Bill Moyers all have in common?

A: They are all scheduled to speak at the New Baptist Covenant, Jan. 30-Feb. 1 pan-Baptist gathering, organized by Jimmy Carter and Mercer University President Bill Underwood to promote unity among the North American Baptists.

Or, perhaps I should say, “were scheduled to speak.” That was before former President Jimmy Carter’s anti-Bush rant in the weekend edition of the Arkansas Gazette. As you know, the worst President in US history said, “I think as far as the adverse impact on the nation around the world, this administration has been the worst in history.” Although he has since backed off his criticism, it’s important to remind liberals that words mean things.

Mike Huckabee has decided to cancel his plans to speak at the Carter-sponsored conference.

images3.jpg“I’m deeply disappointed by the unusually harsh comments made in my state this past weekend regarding President Bush and feel that it represents an unprecedented personal attack on a sitting president by a former president, which is unbecoming the office as well as unbecoming to one whose conference is supposed to be about civility and bringing people together,” Huckabee said yesterday.

Bravo!

Graham and Grassley should join him.

  1. I like Mike!

  2. Very off topic, but I’ve been reading the written statement of the President of Rentech on Hearing on Coal: A Clean Future and wish them luck in their venture to produce diesel from coal.

  3. Off topic but I just read this on F.R and it struck me as deeply dippy….

“I’m not posting this to bash Muslims, but a really weird thing happened last night.
I was at Ross Dress for Less — which is a discount clothing store. Practically everyone in there was muslim, with their kids. The kids were running through the aisles, then dropping on a signal and lying perfectly still. The mothers finally picked up on it and scolded them to stop.

    They were playing suicide bomber.

  4. Mike Huckabee is a good and decent man. Probably too decent for the office he is attempting to gain, and most certainly too good for the company he was about to keep, at this forum.
Other than Grassley, the others can all go hang themselves. Moyers, I’m sad to say, is from my home town. Were it not for Lady Bird(also from my home town) and her husband, Moyers never would have become so well known, or probably such a whacked out leftard.

  5. View from a Christian Canadian:

Carter is right — the US standing in the world at the moment is the lowest it has been in years. Many countries have not enjoyed working with the current US administration…

  6. And your point is …?

  7. Carter is wrong, since he is overlooking the fact that he is, with no competition, the worst President…ever.
Were it not for his bumbling incompetency, the modern terror masters wouldn’t even exist.
As for the perceived notion, that the U.S. is viewed less favorably now, than ever before, I’d like to know what you are basing that on, the liberal media reporting, constantly, that it is, or the fact that Canada now has a conservative administration, as does Germany, and France? Those are not minor events, viewing how socialist those countries have been trending for some time, and I dare say that the emergence of the economy under the leadership of President Bush, has stimulated the candidates and voters in those other countries, to follow his lead.
As for many countries not enjoying working with the U.S., that’s their malfunction, not ours. There is a lengthy list of countries that I would like to cut off all foreign aid and business ties with.
Why should we be liked by everybody?
I would rather have their respect, and in the case of quite a few, their fear.

  8. It is unfortunate that Huckabee has decided to allow political differences to trump spiritual unity. Ironically, by dropping out of the Celebration because of political comments with which he disagreed, Huckabee demonstrated why the Celebration is so desperately needed—Baptists are tragically divided and polarized. The whole point of the Celebration is to bring together all Baptist voices. If there is a gap on the program, it will be the fault of Huckabee for silencing himself. Baptists must come together to show that our unified faith and values are more important than political, racial, or other differences. The compassionate Gospel of Christ is what our divided world needs.

  9. Kaylor, I agree with much of what you said, however, as he is a Baptist minister, I will not question Mike Huckabee’s judgement in declining this invitation. Looking at the list of attendees, I don’t see how anyone could consider this gathering to be anything other than a political conference. I mean, Bill Clinton? Algore? Moyers? If I were Sen. Grassley, I would bail, as he was going to be the only buffer between those other speakers, and Mike Huckabee, as the token conservative at this event. Now, Grassley will be the token conservative, for all the others to gang up on. Graham, he can stay, and bash President Bush, with the other lefties.
I’m not familiar enough with this gathering, but considering it is a Carter organized event, I can only imagine what the agenda is.

  10. I, too, am a Baptist minister and have actually met with the planners of this meeting. There are politicians on the schedule (they will help get media attention after all), but the intent truly is religious.

  11. If Jim Jones were still alive you know he’d be there at the marxist peanut farmers little conference.

Honestly Jimmy Carter is a Baptist? Bullshit! He ought to know better if he really is a baptist but I dont think hes anything except a godless commie and a traitor to the USA…

  12. Blackie! Hey bud, glad to see you made it thru the spam filter.
Jimmah is a Baptist. And he’s a Marxist. They’re not mutually exclusive.

  13. Whatever the differences are in the Baptist community, I can’t take the intent of this gathering to be anything other than a showcase for Jimmah and his leftist friends to espouse their politics.
On the forgive and forget notion, I will do neither for Carter, for what he did while President.

I didn’t know the religion of Gorebal Warming was one of those Baptist things.

  15. Hey Swampie.
Henh, a lot of religious leaders are trying to frame the gorebal warming hocus pocus as a matter for their congregations to address. All the while, unaware algore is starting his own church.

  16. The ministers should give it a serious look; Al Gore’s yearly take love offering from peddling carbon credits to the thinking impaired true believers is enough to make me want to start my own religion, too.

  17. Well, you already don’t sleep well at night, so what the hey!

  18. Since this thread is basically about religion, how about a video for ‘The Religion of Peace Pieces.’

  19. Carter and fact-checking.

  20. I’ve heard good things about Mike. Good for him. It’s really apparent that the company at this little convention would suck. (For the record, I’m still a Duncan Hunter fan)
