Law Of Large Numbers

This headline caught my eye:
Major terrorist bombings since the Sept. 11 attacks

Major terrorist bombings since the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States:
_ July 11, 2006: Seven coordinated bombs explode on trains in Bombay, India, killing 207 people and wounding more than 800.
_ Oct. 30, 2005: Two bombs placed in busy New Delhi markets and one planted on a bus a day before a major Hindu festival kill 62 people and wound hundreds. India blames Kashmiri militants.
_ Sept. 14, 2005: At least 162 people are killed, including 112 by a suicide car bomber in a crowd of day laborers in Baghdad.
_ July 7, 2005: Four suicide bombers attack the London subway and bus systems, killing 52 people and wounding 740.
_ Feb. 28, 2005: A suicide car bomber targets mostly Shiite police and national guard recruits in Hillah, killing 125 people.
_ June 24, 2004: Less than a week before U.S.-led coalition authorities return sovereignty to Iraqis, coordinated bombings kill more than 100. Attack claimed by the now-slain al-Qaida in Iraq leader Abu-Musab al-Zarqawi.
_ March 11, 2004: Ten backpack bombs rip through four trains in Madrid, Spain, killing 191 people and wounding more than 1,200.
_ March 2, 2004: Coordinated blasts from suicide bombers, mortars and planted explosives strike Shiite Muslim shrines in Karbala and Baghdad, killing at least 181 people.
_ Feb. 1, 2004: Twin suicide attacks kill 109 people in two Kurdish party offices in Irbil, Iraq.
_ Aug. 29, 2003: Car bomb in Najaf kills more than 85 people.
_ Aug. 25, 2003: Two taxis packed with explosives blow up outside a Bombay tourist attraction and a busy market, killing 52 and wounding more than 100.
_ Oct. 12, 2002: Nearly 200 people are killed in bombings in a nightclub district of the Indonesian island of Bali. Authorities blame Muslim group Jemaah Islamiyah.

But what is it about this headline that bothers me? Two words: major, and bombings. What must the body count be before AP considers an event to be major? And what about shootings, beheadings, and other grotesque forms of murder and mayhem? No, this list is only about the bombings.

I looked at another source which has attempted to track the path of islamic terrorism since 9/11. Here is a mind-boggling “list” of islamic terror attacks in the last 5 months, for 2005, 2004, and from 9/11/01 through 12/31/03. As the author of the lists says, “it does help to put the accusation of ‘islamophobia’ in its proper context.”

Haifa Loaf Is Better Than None

I was visiting with a friend of mine yesterday, who lived in Haifa for several years. His comment regarding the lack of context and knowledge of the MSM was quite interesting:

“The cable news reporter was showing pictures of Haifa on Saturday, and remarked that due to the Kaytusha rocket attacks, there was no traffic, and very few people out and about. Actually, they could have taken that same picture on any Sabbath in Haifa, and there would be no traffic, and very few people out and about.”
