Civillians step up in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) — Two civilians thwarted an attempted terrorist attack Tuesday when a vehicle loaded with explosives attempted to crash through the front gate of a U.S. base in the Afghan capital, according to the U.S. military.

The two men, an interpreter and a security guard, dragged the apparent suicide bomber from the vehicle before he could detonate explosives, said Col. Tom Collins, the chief spokesman for U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

“I think it’s a pretty amazing and heroic event,” Collins said.

“Amazing” …  “Heroic”

These are not the words that describe the actions of a group of people who are intimidated by the Taleban.

Israeli, Syrian representatives reach secret understandings

syria_map.jpgHow big is this?

In a series of secret meetings in Europe between September 2004 and July 2006, Syrians and Israelis formulated understandings for a peace agreement between Israel and Syria.

The main points of the understandings are as follows:

# An agreement of principles will be signed between the two countries, and following the fulfillment of all commitments, a peace agreement will be signed.

# As part of the agreement on principles, Israel will withdraw from the Golan Heights to the lines of 4 June, 1967. The timetable for the withdrawal remained open: Syria demanded the pullout be carried out over a five-year period, while Israel asked for the withdrawal to be spread out over 15 years.

# At the buffer zone, along Lake Kinneret, a park will be set up for joint use by Israelis and Syrians. The park will cover a significant portion of the Golan Heights. Israelis will be free to access the park and their presence will not be dependent on Syrian approval.

# Israel will retain control over the use of the waters of the Jordan River and Lake Kinneret.

# The border area will be demilitarized along a 1:4 ratio (in terms of territory) in Israel’s favor.

# According to the terms, Syria will also agree to end its support for Hezbollah and Hamas and will distance itself from Iran.

Werewolves! A Repressed Insurgency.

The topic has been discussed here in the past, with little supporting information available on the web to help give perspective on the post Nazi Germany insurgency, the Allied occupation forces had to contend with. The search for available information was often a circular exercise, going back to the same sources, with only brief mentions, and not scholarly works, along with listings of the event leading to a Lot and Box number in the National Archives.
Most have never heard of the German insurgents, while others have determined that their efforts were insignificant, or exaggerated. I had made reference to them, in a comparison with the situation the Multi-National Forces are facing in Iraq, as an example that an insurgency is nothing new, even if the degree of resistance wasn’t similar. Even less is known of the level of resistance, the Soviets encountered, as is so often the case with secretive, dictatorial communist states, there are no public records. I do know, from reading about this insurgency many years ago, that the Werewolves poisoned bottles of alcohol, knowing the Soviets would drink all bottled spirits they would find, and that the Werewolves would shape plastic explosives and color them like a lump of coal, add them to a coal bin at a building housing Allied forces, causing an explosion in the coal fired furnace, often killing military and civilians.
Then I came across a post at Michael Ledeen’s blog, Faster, Please!, which addressed the Werewolf insurgency in Germany, and gave reference to a book and author, that I had not encountered, prior to now. The name of the book is, WEREWOLF!
The History of the National Socialist Guerrilla Movement 1944-1946
, by Perry Biddiscombe.
While I don’t have access to the book, as of yet, there are some excellent examples of the info.

From archive material, personal memoirs, regional histories and court case summaries, the author documents in considerable detail the surprisingly large number and wide geographical dispersion of Werwolf attacks, both against the occupying powers and German ‘collaborators’.

From ‘Faster, Please!’, we have a direct comparison from this insurgency sixty years ago, to the present situation in Iraq.

I am telling the story for several reasons. First, because it’s useful to know that there was considerable resistance to our most successful occupation, and to the task we set ourselves: extirpate totalitarianism and create democracy in Germany. And second, that those who judge our behavior in Iraq as something akin to Nazism (a phrase tossed around by intellectual luminaries in public life with gay abandon, especially luminaries from Massachusetts), know very little about Nazism, or about how tough it was to wipe it out.

If you are as interested in history, as am I, Mr. Ledeen’s post is well worth the read, and can help put in perspective how differently this post-Saddam regime has been dealt with, than the post-Hitler regime, as well as the involvement of outside influences.
