Calling all criminals!

Just read this at Nemsplace…..Ho Hum…

It’s always great to hear that our government has the safety of it’s citizens utmost in their minds. Unfortunately, this is something we rarely hear. The Home Secretary, John Reid has written to court judges appealing to them to only give jail sentences to the most dangerous criminals. The British prison service is in crises as it reaches it’s maximum capacity of 80,000 prisoners so the government wants to cut down on the number of people sentenced until facilities for an extra 8,000 prisoners have been built.

Things are so desperate that a wing at Norwich jail, which was previously declared unfit for use, is going to be re opened. Things are reaching breaking point and are so serious that officials are advising Reid that he will soon have to start releasing prisoners early to make room for others.

the 8,000 new places are not all expected to be available for at least 4 years and in the mean time, things are so desperate that cells in police stations are having to be used to house prisoners already serving their sentences.

So just where will the line be drawn as to what constitutes a dangerous criminal? Is it just murderers that will be jailed bu rapists and armed robbers be given suspended sentences? Or maybe criminals such as muggers will be told to not be naughty boys or they’ll get a smacked bottom. The prison service has been BEGGING for more prisons to be built for decades but have been totally ignored. Now we’re in the position where there is literally no place to put them. One thing’s for sure, wherever the line is drawn that dictates what crime is deemed serious enough for a jail sentence, you can bet that the number of crimes carried out that fall BELOW that line will skyrocket.

Our safety is being traded off in favour of saving money. That’s the bottom line. Rather than build more prisons, we’re letting them go to do just what the hell they like with no risk.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to rob a bank.

  1. Yep, the people that refused to build the prisons are the people soft on crime, too, no doubt. They knew this would happen et voila, jail time for most crimes has been reduced or eliminated. On the other hand, if the people had the right to defend their homes and their property, then jail cells would not be needed and there would probably be a shortage of cemetary spaces.

Y’all may have heard of Sheriff Joe Arpaiowho, when he was elected to office, was facing the same overcrowding situation. Perhaps some of your people need to consult with him. People do not want to go back into his jails. Here’s an example of one of his programs from Wikipedia:

Recently, Arpaio has started mandatory 2-week English classes for non-English-speaking inmates at his jails. At the end of the 2-week course, inmates are required to take a test to see how well they have learned about American government, the words to God Bless America, and the communication of health and safety needs. “These inmates happen to be incarcerated in the United States of America and in Maricopa County where I run the jails, we speak English here, not foreign languages.”, Arpaio said in a statement. Classes last 2 hours a day. The curriculum comprises of the three branches of government, how a bill becomes law, state government, law enforcement and court services, and jailhouse “situational” terminology. Most students are planned to be native-Spanish speakers. Of the 10,000 prisoners in Maricopa County jails, about 3,000 are Hispanic, including approximately 1,000 illegal immigrants.

  2. English only in Maricopa county jails.

I like to keep an eye on what Sheriff Joe is up to because I was living in Arizona and working in Maricopa County when he was first elected and I actually think he’s doing a pretty good job at what he was elected to do.

  3. When the state stops building prison capacity, irrespective of budgetary constraints, they are announcing to the public that there are no consequences for criminal behavior, and that it’s every man/woman for themselves. Then, they disarm the civilian population, making self defense impossible for all the but the most fit and fleet of foot. Then they even make self defense illegal, with the prospect of sending one who defends themself, their family, and property to prison, where the most violent criminals reside.
What in the Wide-Wide-World of sports are the alleged leaders of the government in the UK thinking?
Do they plan on bringing back the Ludovico technique?
The disarming of UK citizens is solely based on feel good legislation, and has created a dangerous effect.

For the better part of a century, British governments have pursued a strategy for domestic safety that a 1992 Economist article characterized as requiring “a restraint on personal liberty that seems, in most civilised countries, essential to the happiness of others,” a policy the magazine found at odds with “America’s Vigilante Values.” The safety of English people has been staked on the thesis that fewer private guns means less crime. The government believes that any weapons in the hands of men and women, however law-abiding, pose a danger, and that disarming them lessens the chance that criminals will get or use weapons.

It really is as simple as the title of Dr. John Lott’s book, More Guns, Less Crime.

Criminals are deterred by higher penalties. Just as higher arrest and conviction rates deter crime, so does the risk that someone committing a crime will confront someone able to defend him or herself. There is a strong negative relationship between the number of law-abiding citizens with permits and the crime rate—as more people obtain permits there is a greater decline in violent crime rates. For each additional year that a concealed handgun law is in effect the murder rate declines by 3 percent, rape by 2 percent, and robberies by over 2 percent.

  4. Hey swampwoman that man’s the real deal. I loved the ‘I’ve got a gun and I’ve got a badge’ bit.

What is it with common sense that so many people avoid it like the plague? America’s got a problem – he’s got the answer, seems PDQ to me.

  5. Yep N2L as someone pointed out disarming the citizens leaves only the police and criminals with guns. therre is news coming through of serious gangs infiltrating Schools in the uK. The reporter siad there was a serious outbreak of shooting last year which they blacked out from the news! Kind of them to do my thinking for me.

    OFF TOPIC:
BTW if you like Savoy Brown check out e-music. Lots of class blues and R&B by them and others (such as Johnnt Winter, Shuggie Otis etc) at very discounted prices. Also my favorite prog album of all time Family ‘A song for Me’ to down load (though Caravan would be my fav. prog band). Certainly worth a look.

  6. Yeah, well the gun grabbers aren’t through with their agenda quite yet, but they aren’t as brazen now as they were during the Clintoon years.
What I need to do is get another turntable, so I can start playing my vinyl’s again. I start looking at them, then get distracted by other things. Plus, there is so much good new music as well, that I like to listen too.

  7. True but those vinyls sound warm don’t they? – and the old record players never really died as expected did they?

I think we should have a weekly blues/ decent music thread.

  8. Agreed.
Hey, how about that Cab Calloway video on Hugo’s thread.
    Cab was a class act.

  9. Mmmm what’s the best cover of ‘Minnnie the Moocher’ – Commander Cody?

  10. Good question, vimto.
    It requires investigation.

  11. vinyl press

I found it very useful. Thanks for the knowledge. I am personally trying to follow the advice & try to be independent.
