Global Warming: More skepticism from the peanut gallery

It’s tough being labeled a flat-earther, knuckle-dragger, mouthbreather, denier, or any of the perjoratives that the enlightened ones care to employ to describe opponents of the apocalyptic global warming non-debate. It’s the kind of thing that would just break my heart–if I had one. So instead, I’ll just run interference for the experts who say that the orthodoxy must be challenged. They make a pretty good argument. Like this one from Nigel Calder

So one awkward question you can ask, when you’re forking out those extra taxes for climate change, is “Why is east Antarctica getting colder?” It makes no sense at all if carbon dioxide is driving global warming. While you’re at it, you might inquire whether Gordon Brown will give you a refund if it’s confirmed that global warming has stopped. The best measurements of global air temperatures come from American weather satellites, and they show wobbles but no overall change since 1999.

Interesting questions that in and of themselves prove nothing……except that the science of global warming is anything but settled.

Perhaps that’s what bothers me more than anything in this non-debate: the insistence that the debate is over, conclusive, not open to questioning, and anyone who dares raise questions must be on the payroll of some evil capitalist enterprise. The fact is, there is a helluva lot more money going to the pro-side of this issue than the knuckle-dragger, flat-earther, evil-evangelical-Christian-Bushco-Halliburton deniers are getting. No? Just ask EDF, Sierra, Audubon, et al. This whole issue smells with the same panicky, over-reactive, junk-science scent of the DDT scam.

  1. The late Karl Popper, one of the 20th century’s most eminent philosophers, wrote and spoke often of the glories — and dangers — of the Enlightenment’s faith in science. ” … the theory that truth is manifest not only breeds fanatics — men possessed by the conviction that all those who do not see the manifest truth must be possessed by the devil — but it may also lead … to authoritarianism.”

You may think that’s overwrought. But remember that just last week on February 9, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi declared that government would have to impose a mandatory cap to reduce greenhouse emissions by 50%, a move that would bring government ever more deeply into the heart of the economy. And that, global warming enthusiasts add, would just be a first step. For, after all, it is the point of the whole global warming agitation to begin with.

    Pucker up, buttercup.
As always, read the whole thang.

  2. Oh for Heavens sake.
Just saw my first doom and gloom shock ad for the pending destruction of future generations on tv. What horse-hockey.
On a related story…Marx Would Have Loved Kyoto.

Agreeing with him are 60 leading scientists who in April wrote Harper an open letter, published in the Canadian Financial Post, asking him to keep his pledge to review Canada’s commitment to the Kyoto Protocol.

“Global climate,” said the scientists, “changes all the time due to natural causes, and the human impact still remains impossible to distinguish from this natural ‘noise.’

“If, back in the mid-1990s, we knew what we know today about climate, Kyoto would almost certainly not exist because we would have concluded it was not necessary.”

They add that “activists (attempt) to convince the public that a climate catastrophe is looming and humanity is the cause. Neither of these fears is justified.”
The left has always proclaimed that poor countries are poor only because the capitalist West has exploited them, just as they proclaim the capitalist West has exploited Earth. Kyoto is the lefties’ and greenies’ payback.

Karl Marx once said the goal of communism was a system that extracted from each according to his ability to give to each according to his need. Come to think of it, Kyoto says the same thing.

  3. Yep. They’re presenting areas that are warming, ignoring areas that are cooling, and overall, we are talking 1 degree. One freakin’ degree in over 100 years. Well, I don’t know about y’all, but in a hundred years I daresay my grandkids, if they are still surviving, will not give a rat’s ass if the temperature has gone up another degree. (And give me a break about the projected temperature increases that get increasingly hysterical. When somebody can tell me what temperature it will be on February 28th at 9 a.m. or on February 14, 2009, at 11:30 p.m. I’ll start to pay attention.)

  4. Uhhh…you mean an accurate prediction, right Swampie? Cause they are waiting in line to tell you a temp.
On another unrelated story…henh-henh-henh…Edwards blogger…hahahaha…Amanda Marcotte, has resigned.

    AMEN Swamps,A F’inMEN.

  6. I can give you the EXACT temperature at that time and date. Unfortunately I cannot give you the exact location.

  7. smartass….

  8. Henh.
/marx would have loved kyoto…and hated us

  9. kyoto….hummm. Wasn’t that something that Bush didn’t sign 95 to 0 before he was even President?

  10. That’s the one. See, if the Senate had voted for it, it would have been forwarded to Gov. Bush for his autograph.
    See how that works?
    /everything is Bush’s fault

  11. Grasshopper…. is starting to see the light.

  12. Gotta cut it short. Dang ‘puter is running slow again.
I will leave you with a little Johnny Cash tune I was listening to earlier.
    Dedicated to *snicker*Amanda Marcotte*chortle*.

  13. G’nite N2L, I’ll give it a listen.

  14. What do you know about global warming? Take the environmental test!

  15. Here’s more of the “debate is over” crappola, this time from McCain and Lieberman.
The rush is on for politicos to be out in front of this nonsense, using cover from a politically engineered report, that hasn’t even been fully released. Will any candidates have the cajones to run while opposing this power grab?

  16. Ignore the trends. Ignore the extremes. No one cares if your tomato patch dies. And by all means, never ever sign a packet of documents for which hundreds of trees sacrificed their lives. It’s all science. Something about which the rovian nay-sayers know so little. Just don’t come to me the next time your well goes dry. Keep pissing into the wind. In time, it will all come back to you.

  17. Dang. I haven’t been able to grow a good stand of tomatoes for 5 years. But the fruit stand on hwy 98 does. I’m talking the real thang baybee. Big ‘ol home grown ‘maters, the kind that just one slice makes a sammich, know what I mean?

  18. It’s amusing to me how the people that bleat about the “science” of global warming know so little about it. Yeah, baby, ‘maters and green beans and strawberries all winter, watermelons and cantelope all summer.

Ol’ sauerkraut probably never grew a ‘mater in its life.

  19. MMMMM, I want me some fried green maters now. Bring on that Gorebal warming!

  20. David Asman from Fox News does a little more digging on the Global Warming debate, and just guess where it leads? The U.N. 😯

On Global Warming: Follow the Money Indeed!

  21. I need a little global warming for tomato season up here. Just too dang short!

  22. Robert D., I refer you back to the ‘accelerate global warming’ thread.
    /hey…that thing got a hemi?

  23. Slashdot: “Simultaneous warming on Earth and Mars suggests that our planet’s recent climate changes might have a natural — and not a human-induced — cause. Mars, it appears, has also been experiencing milder temperatures in recent years. In 2005 data from NASA’s Mars Global Surveyor and Odyssey missions revealed that the carbon dioxide ‘ice caps’ near Mars’s south pole had been diminishing for three summers in a row. Habibullo Abdussamatov, head of the St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory in Russia, says the Mars data is evidence that the current global warming on Earth is being caused by changes in the sun.”
