Last man standing

When I heard about the Terra Pass gift cards being handed out at The Oscars, it reminded me of the Catholic Church’s practice of selling indulgences. I thought about Luther, The 95 Theses, and the righteous rebellion against money and influence. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who thought about this. Thomas Lifson at American Thinker wrote about this, and also another analogy: the “commutation fee” during the American Civil War.

During the Civil War, it was possible for well-to-do men who were drafted to pay a $300 “commutation fee” and escape the draft. The move sparked much public outrage, creating the impression that the war was a “rich man’s war” and probably contributing to the disgraceful draft riots in New York City, which led to the lynching of African Americans.

gore.gifSo, Al Gore buys carbon offsets as forgiveness for his sin of producing too much carbon dioxide, or something like that. BUT who does he buy these offsets from? According to a story published at Ecotality by Bill Hobbs, he buys them from Generation Investment Management, a company he co-founded, and serves as chairman.

Gore helped found Generation Investment Management, through which he and others pay for offsets. The firm invests the money in solar, wind and other projects that reduce energy consumption around the globe…

As co-founder and chairman of the firm … he “buys” his “carbon offsets” from himself, through a transaction designed to boost his own investments and return a profit to himself. To be blunt, Gore doesn’t buy “carbon offsets” through Generation Investment Management – he buys stocks.

And it is not clear at all that Gore’s stock purchases – excuse me, “carbon offsets” purchases – actually help reduce the use of carbon-based energy at all, while the gas lanterns and other carbon-based energy burners at his house continue to burn carbon-based fuels and pump carbon emissions – a/k/a/ “greenhouse gases” – into the atmosphere.

I wrote previously that Gore has decided to try and re-frame global warming as a “moral issue”, and the irony of the neo-moralists™ who reject any semblance of traditional faith, but have embraced the global warming cause with true religious zeal. It has become a matter of unquestioned faith – even though Gore himself admitted that the premise of his film was based on exaggerated rhetoric that he described in a 2006 interview as “over-representation of factual presentation”.

TV pundit and former congressman, Joe Scarborough, believes the stars have aligned for Gore.

Anyone vaguely familiar with Nixon’s long path to the presidency who was watching the Oscars had to be thinking that history was aligning Gore’s fate with that of the 37th president. And judging from my discussion with Joe Klein and Pat Buchanan last night on Scarborough Country, political experts are beginning to believe that Al Gore may be the last Democrat standing in 2008.

As Buchanan pointed out, Mr. Gore has been right on the war from the beginning. And unlike Barrack Obama, he has the experience to soothe the jangled nerves of Democratic party bosses. The Nation’s John Nichols also pointed out that Gore has more experience in Washington than Hillary Clinton, Barrack Obama and John Edwards combined. That may not mean much when things are calm across the globe but these are not normal times.

As support for Hillary begins to dwindle in the African-American community, and Obama’s lack of gravitas becomes even more apparent, could Gore actually be the last Democrat standing?

  1. You mean, The Saint, Algoreia might be the Dhimmi’s Presidential candidate?
I welcome the thought, of the Dhimmis trotting out this tool who is even more left than their Congressional members, or the nutroots.

  2. well, I heard some poll nums on TV that said Hillary’s support in the black community was shrinking fast. Her campaign is imploding. Obama won’t be the dem standardbearer. My lil pony is just another lawyer in an empty suit. Kerry has already redeployed. That only leaves algore. Heh. It’s gonna be fun.

  3. Henh…it’s almost like watching a rerun of Fawlty Towers.

  4. Yeah, the one with the letters refigured to read “Farty Towels.”

We are on the same wave length. Please, run AlGore!

  5. The left will tear themselves apart well before the election. The right will mumble their way through the summer and not say a thing. Then, and only then will Newt appear….the stars are aligning I tells ya1!

  6. algore is on South Park right now.

The stars are aligning? So we can mow down the Hollyweird types more easily?

  7. I do believe N2L. It was looking grim just a couple months ago, but I do believe…

  8. it’s almost like watching a rerun of Fawlty Towers…so true!!..ty so much Nuke for stoppin by and the link..nice to see ya!..:)

  9. thanks angel. good to see you

  10. I think that all of the above will certainly help Bill Richardson’s campaign.

  11. could be. He would make a good veep

  12. Newt would keep him in line, but I don’t think they cross party lines like that.

  13. No, I didn’t mean he would make a good Republican veep, I meant he would be good on the ticket for the goracle.

  14. This is a good place to put this reminder.

Decades ago, we expected total victory against the Germans and the Japanese. We demanded it, for we knew what anything less would bring to our homeland–and yes, it was our homeland, regardless of our place of birth. We were united, together in the absolute, unshakeable belief that freedom was worth blood, even our own lives.

Many years later, the American Left called for the defeat and humiliation of our military, even going so far as to support the barbaric hordes of Islam in their quest to destroy America. The college-age hippies of 1969 were now parents and grandparents, with families who didn’t have the faintest idea where Iwo Jima is and wouldn’t dream of enlisting in the “imperialist army” of their nation. These past flower children, still apparently lost in the fog of free love and LSD, forgot their fathers’ old “war injuries,” received in places like Normandy, Bastogne, or Wake Island. Their children hated authority, hated America, and hated anything that stood in the way of the freedoms they abused. To them, freedom of speech meant they should be able to wear their “F*** You” shirt to school.

It’s from Gathering of Eagles, and they are still gathering help. Hot Air reminded me.

    The Eagle Site Is Here

  15. No, I didn’t mean he would make a good Republican veep, I meant he would be good on the ticket for the goracle.

OK. On the losing ticket. That makes more sense now.

  16. glad I cleared that up 🙂

  17. G’nite nuke.

  18. The Gathering of Eagles. They make me proud.
They also reminded me why I saved this image.

  19. Yep, Robert D, reminds me of when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, the Hollywood stars immediately enlisted no matter the detriment to their career (or their age). All this generation of Hollyweenies is apparently capable of getting worked up about is undercutting the troops and working themselves into a mass hysteria over the speculative event of global warming that is being championed by people who earn their living from it. Pathetic. They ignore a present danger that is killing thousands now and has a stated goal of killing millions in order to emote over a remote event that is far less dangerous than the earth plunging into an ice age.

  20. Nice picture N2L.

Swamps, just a couple of centuries ago we left Europe. Now the left wants us to be Europe.

  21. Well, it just chaps my butt that they are using all available fora to publicly berate Americans for an event that scientists are NOT in agreement about except the ones that make their living from it.

And Angelina Jolieapparently thinks that the CFR asked her to join because of her vast knowledge of international affairs. (No, not THAT kind of affairs.) (You will have to scroll down.)

  25. […] So, there you have the Democratic field for the 2008 campaign. Ignorant or inexperienced. It’s still very early in the campaign season, and anything can happen.
