Conservatives Growing Support For Giuliani Is Baffling!

I was able to listen to most of Micheal Medved’s interview with Dick Morris today. One item of conversation that got my attention, is that the sudden surge of Rudy to a 41% to 24% lead over John McCain, in a recent poll of likely Republican voters, is that those identified as Evangelical Christians were now supporting Rudy in greater numbers. These are the current vote totals at, where it is asked, in the right side column, if Rudy is too liberal to be the Republican nominee.
I find this somewhat baffling, but also realize not everyone is fully informed at this point, eventhough the election cycle has been accelerated due to the earlier primaries in ’08.
I had posted earlier, on the reservations I had about Rudy’s apparent lack of support of the Second Amendment, and there have been many articles and columns written about his pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, and other liberal views. In the interim, there have been reports about how he would make conservative judicial appointments, if he were President.
Candidates can and do say many things, when they aspire to high office, and many know they are only words intended to get them elected, and don’t get too upset when those words prove false. It is with that in mind, that I have to express my belief that we need to know everything about a potential candidate, before the nomination is made. One way we can know how a candidate will perform in office, is by looking at what they have done in past positions. I already indicated above how Rudy views the original Homeland Security Act, the Second Amendment, but in a report released today, we now have a better idea how he will behave in selecting judges, and yes the going in ‘drag’ is an issue. From The Politico.

“I would want judges who are strict constructionists because I am,” he told South Carolina Republicans last month. “Those are the kinds of justices I would appoint — Scalia, Alito and Roberts.”

A Politico review of the 75 judges Giuliani appointed to three of New York state’s lower courts found that Democrats outnumbered Republicans by more than 8 to 1. One of his appointments was an officer of the International Association of Lesbian and Gay Judges.

The entire piece is worth the read, and isn’t totally unflattering to Rudy, but is another ‘chink’ in his strengthening candidacy.
For a Republican candidate, all I want and expect, is a certified, genuine conservative, not one that is a poser or pretender to that ideology. Some might think I am unbending, and require an ideologically pure candidate, like the leftards do, and they may be right, but in order to preserve this nation, we can’t afford a liberal in office, regardless of the party that they are aligned with.
I do need to add, that I think Rudy is a good man, and he has my respect for the leadership he provided New York for many years, and when they needed him most, after the mufsidun attack on the World Trade Center. I do believe there are some positions in our government, that he could serve quite well in, just not the POTUS.

Update: Dick Morris’ post on the ’08 primaries.

Liquid explosives found in Lebanon

Last summer’s plot to blow up 10 airliners involved liquid explosives that were set to detonate inside carry-on luggage.  The disruptions for passengers and security personnel have included the banning of liquids, toothpaste, gels, and other personal items that until now have seemed like an over-reaction to a threat that may or may not have been real.

It no longer seems like an over-reaction, as Lebanese police are reporting the confiscation of liquid explosives at the Lebanese Palestinian camp of Ain Hilwa, near Sidon port.

Free Republic….Where’s Pookie?

Yesterday was a strange day on Free Republic. Pookie posted his toons as usual but the moderators took them down. He then re-posted and the same thing happened. In fact he posted the thread at least 4 times – and in the end got his account suspended. I was in touch with him during the process as I often mail him about my ‘toons, which apart from publishing he also (thankfully) proof reads. He was tight lipped about why the thread was being pulled and why he was determined to post it regardless. But it seems the mods and Pookie18 (to give him his full name) have had ‘run-in’s’ before. I guess there are copyright issues about republishing ‘toons, and not all of them walked the party line (as it were).

Does this mean the end of Free Republic’s daily ‘toon round up? It would be a shame because they are very popular – regularly getting well over 1000 hits. Besides Pookie was the first to publish my ‘vimto’ toons so I am eternally grateful to him and sorry that is has come to this. It seems there may have been an expletive in one of the ‘toons (I sure didn’t pick it up).

I don’t know how to contact him outside the mail facility on F.R. So Pookie – if you are reading this – warm regards friend and I (and many others) just hope this blows through.
