Independence Day! Hats Off To “Old Glory”

I Am Old Glory:
For more than ten score years I have been the banner of hope and freedom for generation after generation of Americans.
Born amid the first flames of America’s fight for freedom, I am the symbol of a country that has grown from a little group of thirteen colonies to a united nation of fifty sovereign states.
Planted firmly on the high pinnacle of American Faith my gently fluttering folds have proved an inspiration to untold millions.
Men have followed me into battle with unwavering courage.
They have looked upon me as a symbol of national unity.
They have prayed that they and their fellow citizens might continue to enjoy the life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, which have been granted to every American as the heritage of free men.
So long as men love liberty more than life itself; so long as they treasure the priceless privileges bought with the blood of our forefathers; so long as the principles of truth, justice and charity for all remain deeply rooted in human hearts, I shall continue to be the enduring banner of the United States of America.

(Master Sergeant Percy Webb, USMC.)
I’m honored and proud to observe this day, our nations day of Independence from tyranny.

  8. Thank you, vimto.
Hope you don’t hold that whole rebellion and past due taxes to the crown thing against us.

  9. Happy Indenpendence Day!..Let freedom ring! 🙂

  10. Happy 4th, everybody! It has been a rather drippy, soggy day here, and we passed on taking the grandkids to parades in the rain. I don’t think any sparkers will even be lit tonight. I wanted to go to the beach to watch th illegal fireworks going off, but guess I’ll stay in tonight instead.

  11. Hey Drippy Swampie!
That’s weird, you finally get a soggy day, and it hasn’t rained here for the first day in…I don’t know since when.
I’ll be heading out to the patio in a little while, to watch the big fireworks show a nearby country club puts on each year.

  12. I spoke too soon about the rain spoiling the festivities. Here in Florida, we are only allowed to have sparklers (damn nanny staters). Most people joyfully ignore that prohibition. The people around our place have had some industrial strength HUGE fireworks they’re setting off that sound a lot like if I were caught in the middle of a bunch of people shooting mortars at me.

The horse was going crazy, because the only open space around here is, uh, over my pastures, which is where the fireworks were ending up. The entire place is under a cloud of smoke. The sheep are content to gather around the shepherd under an outside light for protection. A horse just decides to run right over the top of whatever is in her way, fence, gate, or me when I open the gate to try to tie her in her stall for her protection. Yeah, that’s gonna hurt tomorrow. I have finally found a place that she is not going batshit crazy which is under the pear tree in my backyard. The dogs are cowering in kennels, the cats are God only knows where, the sheep are herded in a tight group under the light, and the horse has stopped screaming and running into things and is kinda/sorta settled down in the back yard; I hope she doesn’t break a leg if she gets re-spooked, but I’m not going to risk any broken bones and sudden death again trying to lead her to her stall to tie her securely.

People are shooting guns into the air which makes me a lil’ nervous, illegal fireworks are lighting up the sky along with lightning, and the lightning bugs are out in gentle, quiet force tonight. It’s real purty sight.

  13. Never a dull moment, at the Swamp Peoples place.
