There were four important legislative accomplishments which occurred during the previous Administration:

1) Welfare Reform

2) Defense of Marriage Act

4) Telecommunications Act

Although Slick Willy claimed credit for each, none would have been possible without Republican leadership.  Naturally, none of the laws are popular with the nutroots. Since the former first lady has been running on Slick’s record, she found herself on some uncomfortable ground last week.

At the YearlyPOS Convention, Hillary had some splainin’ to do

I believe he’s called “Prime Minister.”

Silent Landing

skeeter1.jpg…in the past few years has malaria captured the full attention of aid agencies and donors. The World Health Organization has made malaria reduction a chief priority. Bill Gates, who has called malaria “the worst thing on the planet,” has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to the effort through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The Bush Administration has pledged 1.2 billion dollars. Funds devoted to malaria have doubled since 2003. The idea is to disable the disease by combining virtually every known malaria-fighting technique, from the ancient (Chinese herbal medicines) to the old (bed nets) to the ultramodern (multidrug cocktails). At the same time, malaria researchers are pursuing a long-sought, elusive goal: a vaccine that would curb the disease for good.

Much of the aid is going to a few hard-hit countries scattered across sub-Saharan Africa. If these nations can beat back the disease, they’ll serve as templates for the global antimalaria effort. And if they can’t? Well, nobody in the malaria world likes to answer that question.

The outcry over this epidemic, until recently, has been muted. Malaria is a plague of the poor, easy to overlook. The most unfortunate fact about malaria, some researchers believe, is that prosperous nations got rid of it. In the meantime, several distinctly unprosperous regions have reached the brink of total malarial collapse, virtually ruled by swarms of buzzing, flying syringes.

National Geographic takes a look at one of the oldest, most successful killers on the planet : malaria.

One of our visitors took issue recently with our post on Rachel Carson, citing a lack of any evidence to support the conclusions of the post. I invite you to spend a few minutes and educate yourself about this deadly parasite. Frankly, I didn’t read anything that contradicted my earlier post — but you be the judge.

I Like Mike Roundup and Open Thread

From Team Huckabee:

Team Huckabee is currently in Sheldon, Iowa tonight.

Newt Gingrich said today that Governor Huckabee is the most interesting dark horse, and that he is catching on with GOP voters. Check out his statement here.

Republican Race ’08 is out with new online rankings, and has Gov. Huckabee in the number two spot.

Linkfest Haven, the Blogger's OasisIt was great to meet Don McDowell of Cyclone Conservatives at a few events today. He has a writeup of his interaction with Gov. Huckabee found here.

Michigan Redneck aka Kathy Wells shares why she “Likes Mike” in her latest YouTube video. Watch it here, it is great.

Global Species Watch

frog.jpgThe Good News: –>An expedition to a remote forest in the Democratic Republic of Congo has uncovered six new animal species.Conservationists discovered one new bat species, a new rat and two new species each of shrews and frogs.

The Bad News: –>

The grey white, long-beaked animal is the world’s first cetacean -the order of whales, dolphins and porpoises -to be made extinct by man, concludes an international team that has conducted comprehensive surveys of its habitat.

The demise of the near-blind mammal also represents the first extinction of a large vertebrate (backboned animal) for more than 50 years, since overhunting claimed the Caribbean monk seal in the 1950s. A zoologist said it was a “shocking tragedy.”

Nuke Says: Hmmm, let’s see…….That makes us “Plus 5,” doesn’t it?

I blame Bush.

Uhhh, you missed a spot…

kolinski.jpg A Michigan man scrubbed a monument to U.S. troops with a toothbrush Tuesday while wearing a T-shirt that read “I Stole From Veterans” as part of a punishment for a scam to solicit scrap yards for metal, the Saginaw News reports.

A judge ordered Philip Kolinski, 73, of Carrollton Township, Mich., to wash the veterans monument outside the Saginaw County Governmental Center after he was found guilty of soliciting metal donations for a sculpture dedicated to Iraq War veterans that was never built, the Saginaw News said.

Instead of using the metal for a monument, he sold it and kept the money, the paper reports

I blame Global Warming.

Winter Soldier Syndrome

Continuing on yesterday’s theme, Michelle Malkin weighs in…….

malkin.jpgBy Michelle Malkin Commentary
August 08, 2007

Michelle MalkinThe tale of Army Private Scott Thomas Beauchamp, the discredited “Baghdad Diarist” for the discredited New Republic magazine, is an old tale: Self-aggrandizing soldier recounts war atrocities. Media outlets disseminate soldier’s tales uncritically. Military folks smell a rat and poke holes in tales too good (or rather, bad) to be true. Soldier’s ideological sponsors blame the messengers for exposing anti-war fraud.

Beauchamp belongs in the same ward as John F. Kerry, the original infectious agent of the toxic American disease known as Winter Soldier Syndrome. The ward is filling up.   {snip}

The doubters of Scott Thomas know atrocities when they see them. But, unlike the TNR editors, they know steaming bull dung when they smell it.Ever since John Kerry sat in front of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and accused American soldiers of wantonly razing villages “in fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan,” the Left has embraced a small cadre of self-loathing soldiers and soldier wannabes willing to sell their deadened souls for the anti-war cause. Think Jimmy Massey, the unhinged Marine who falsely accused his unit of engaging in mass genocide against Iraqis. Think Jesse MacBeth and Micah Wright, anti-war Army Rangers who weren’t Army Rangers.

Winter Soldier Syndrome will only be cured when the costs of slandering the troops outweigh the benefits. Exposing Scott Thomas Beauchamp and his brethren matters because the truth matters. The honor of the military matters. The credibility of the media matters. Think it doesn’t make a difference? Imagine where Sen. John Kerry would be now if the Internet had been around in 1971.

The Ultimate Global Warming Challenge

Think the science is settled? The debate is over?

The deniers and knuckledraggers have polluted the clarity of the TRUTH?

Well, then this should be a walk in the park for you. A piece of cake. Child’s play.

Just accept the Ultimate Global Warming Challenge from and pick up a cool 100 Large! (And save algore’s bacon to boot.) Here are the rules:

$100,000 will be awarded to the first person to prove, in a scientific manner, that humans are causing harmful global warming. The winning entry will specifically reject both of the following two hypotheses:

UGWC Hypothesis 1

Manmade emissions of greenhouse gases do not discernibly, significantly and predictably cause increases in global surface and tropospheric temperatures along with associated stratospheric cooling.

UGWC Hypothesis 2

The benefits equal or exceed the costs of any increases in global temperature caused by manmade greenhouse gas emissions between the present time and the year 2100, when all global social, economic and environmental effects are considered.
