It’s all over but the crying

Ivo is worried…..

Everything, everywhere, is going to go extinct in the next 10 to 50 years. Really. Would you disbelieve National Geographic, CNN, and Scientific American?

The reason, of course, is that the half of all species that were supposed to be extinct by 2000 flatly refused to do so. Norman Myers, Edward O. Wilson, Paul Ehrlich and Thomas Lovejoy have predicted such catastrophe ever since their hippie heydays. The very same people keep getting quoted as reliable sources and keep making the same predictions. The more they turn out to be false, the more crazy they make them.

The most succinct: Earth ‘will expire by 2050?. Heaven knows why people worry about the climate in 2100. Or have babies. I always knew retirement annuities were a scam.

Just scan the list of extinction headlines on this page. Once you’ve finished laughing, ask yourself: does the media have any credibility on environmental questions at all?

Hehehe, nice job, Ivo.

Reid: One Meeeeelyun Deaths

Harry Reid is now on record as claiming as “Truth”, the dubious statistic of a million Iraqi deaths since the beginning of the war. It seems that bad news is good news for the majority leader.

In an interview with Reno Gazette Journal reporter Anjeanette Damon, Reid shows just how desperate to lose the war he has become.

Q: You disagree with the assessment President Bush and Gen. Petraeus put forth this week. How do you think the course should be changed?

A: All you have to do is look at what they said. Nothing has changed since the surge started. Today, now we learn that 1 million Iraqis have been killed since the war started. A million. That’s pretty hard to comprehend….

abu-reid.jpg“That’s pretty hard to comprehend…”

I’ll agree with Reid on that last point. Besides being almost twice the number of last year’s discredited and debunked Lancet study, the source of Reid’s assertion appears not to be the result of any type of study, but rather a poll taken by a UK opinion research company.
From the poll assumptions:

Q: How many members of your household, if any, have died as a result of the conflict in Iraq since 2003 (ie as a result of violence rather than a natural death such as old age)? Please note that I mean those who were actually living under your roof.

None 78%
One 16%
Two 5%
Three 1%
Four or more 0.002%

Given that from the 2005 census there are a total of 4,050,597 households this data suggests a total of 1,220,580 deaths since the invasion in 2003.

Well, is the poll suggesting this, or as Reid asserts, stating a fact?
The poll data uses a simple extrapolation to arrive at the total of more than a million deaths.

Here’s a question that probably wasn’t asked, “Where are the bodies?”

Another poll from the same polling company says that regardless of the ongoing hardship and bloodshed, ” Iraqis still prefer the current regime to that of Saddam Hussein two to one.”

And, since Harry Reid seems to be enthralled with poll numbers, here is one that he should be paying attention to, instead of spending so much time carrying water for Moveon.org.

Dachau album is historical treasure

From the Associated Press

This is a story of Holocaust survival compressed into two tragic lives, a tale with threads stretching from Warsaw to Auschwitz and Dachau, from Australia to suburban England, and finally to a bedroom in Florida where a fatherless girl makes a traumatic discovery.

<img src=’http://conservablogs.com/nuke/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/dachau.thumbnail.jpg’ alt=’dachau.jpg’ align=’left’This is Shari Klages’ mystery: How did Arnold Unger, her Polish Jewish father, a 15-year-old newcomer to Dachau, end up in possession of the artwork of a Polish Catholic more than twice his age, who had been in the concentration camps through most of World War II?

None of the records Klages found confirm that the two men knew each other, though they lived in adjacent blocks in Dachau. All that is certain is that Unger overlapped with Porulski during the three weeks the boy spent among nearly 30,000 inmates of Dachau’s main camp.

“He never talked about his experiences in the war,” said Klages. “I don’t recall specifically ever being told about the album, or actually learning that I was the child of a Holocaust survivor. It was just something I always knew.”

As adults, she and her three siblings took turns keeping the album and Unger’s other wartime memorabilia.

The album begins with an image of four prisoners in winter coats carrying suitcases and marching toward Dachau’s watchtower under the rifles of SS guards. It is followed by a scene of two inmates being stripped for a humiliating examination by a kapo, a prisoner working for the Nazis.

One image portrays two prisoners pausing in their work to doff their caps to a soldier escorting a prostitute – intimated by the seam on her stocking. Another shows a leashed dog lunging at a terrified inmate.

The drawings grow more and more debasing. Three prisoners hang by their arms tied behind their backs; a captured escapee is paraded wearing a sign: “Hurray, I am back again”; an inmate is hanged from a scaffold; and, in the final image, a man lies on the ground, shot dead next to the barbed-wire fence under the looming watchtower.

Sandwich Shop Blues

From Ummah News

DAMMAM – A husband divorced his wife at a popular shawarma sandwich stand in this Eastern Province city after the woman became hysterical when two other women complimented him on the way he looks.

The husband added insult to his wife’s injury after she began yelling at the women: He ordered her to roll up the windows of the car and to shut up.

She not only refused, but also got out of the car.

He divorced her on the spot and drove off — leaving us to wonder if perhaps the incident at the shawarma stand was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back of a long-brewing marital dispute.

/What’s her problem? I mean, he was letting her ride inside, instead in the back of the truck. Plus, what were these two women doing at a sandwich shop unescorted?

Report: Israeli Jets Destroyed Syrian Nuke Cache

From Foxnews.com….

It was just after midnight when the 69th Squadron of Israeli F-15Is crossed the Syrian coast-line. On the ground, Syria’s formidable air defences went dead. An audacious raid on a Syrian target 50 miles from the Iraqi border was under way.

At a rendezvous point on the ground, a Shaldag air force commando team was waiting to direct their laser beams at the target for the approaching jets. The team had arrived a day earlier, taking up position near a large underground depot. Soon the bunkers were in flames.

Ten days after the jets reached home, their mission was the focus of intense speculation this weekend amid claims that Israel believed it had destroyed a cache of nuclear materials from North Korea.

The Israeli government was not saying. “The security sources and IDF [Israeli Defence Forces] soldiers are demonstrating unusual courage,” said Ehud Olmert, the prime minister. “We naturally cannot always show the public our cards.”

The Syrians were also keeping mum. “I cannot reveal the details,” said Farouk al-Sharaa, the vice-president. “All I can say is the military and political echelon is looking into a series of responses as we speak. Results are forthcoming.” The official story that the target comprised weapons destined for Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Lebanese Shiite group, appeared to be crumbling in the face of widespread scepticism.

Thermal Energy Cell called “miracle energy tube”

heatermos1509_468×475.jpgThe UK Daily Mail has an interesting article about a breakthrough product by a company called Ecowatts that seems to ‘create’ energy from virtually nothing. Does this sound too good to be true?

Even the makers of the device are at a loss to explain exactly how it works – but sceptical independent scientists carried out their own tests and discovered that the 12in x 2in tube really does produce far more heat energy than the electrical energy put in.

The device seems to break the fundamental physical law that energy cannot be created from nothing – but researchers believe it taps into a previously unrecognised source of energy, stored at a sub-atomic level within the hydrogen atoms in water.

From the company’s website…”The Thermal Energy Cell works in conjunction with a thermal store in order to provide a high efficient continual supply of hot water and room heating.

The TEC will have great advantages over other micro-generation systems in that it is a direct replacement for conventional gas, oil and electrical heating systems;

* The TEC will not be limited by the specific installation requirements experienced with PV, Solar Heating and Wind Turbines.
* The TEC, compared with ground source heat pumps, does not require a bore hole or a large area of land.
* The TEC is silent unlike air source heat pumps. ” source

The development of the groundbreaking technology results from a chance meeting between Ecowatts chairman Chris Davies, his wife Jane and an Irish inventor, Christopher Eccles, while the couple were on holiday near Shannon in 1998.

After the inventor showed the couple his laboratory experiments, Mrs Davies, immediately signed a £20,000 cheque on the bonnet of her car and handed it over to Mr Eccles.

He later became chief scientist of Ecowatts’ parent company Gardner Watts, but has since left after ‘falling out’ with the company, according to insiders. Sadly, Mrs Davies died three years ago, so she will be unable to share in the success of her husband’s development of the idea.
