Snakes for sale

Since I’ll be out of pocket most of the day, I thought I would go to the well once again…Ye Olde Open Thread...

LAS VEGAS, Oct. 1 (UPI) — A Las Vegas man faces up to five years in prison and $750,000 in fines for attempting to sell poisonous snakes over the Internet.

Cody Brett Bartolini, 21, has pleaded not guilty in federal court to three felony counts of attempted unlawful sale of wildlife, The Las Vegas Journal-Review reported Monday.

Bartolini was arrested Friday after an investigation revealed he had been offering venomous snakes for sale or trade from his home in Las Vegas for three years.

When U.S. Fish and Wildlife agents raided his house they found 48 snakes of various species, a caiman, a Gila monster and an alligator snapping turtle, prosecutors told the newspaper.

Among the snakes Bartolini is charged with attempting to sell are seven green mambas, two forest cobras, one black-necked spitting cobra, two Great Basin rattlesnakes, a Mohave sidewinder rattlesnake and a southwestern speckled rattlesnake. source

This isn’t the same guy that put the snake in his mouth and got bitten. But, he ain’t much brighter.

Old times there are not forgotten

I did not know about this. From the Washington Times

Now well past 90, Judith MacKnight Jones is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, the illness that robbed her of all of her memory, her most precious asset.

She has been lying here for the past 11 years, covered by a patchwork blanket, made from pieces her great-grandmother brought from the United States between 1865 and 1885, after the Confederacy lost the Civil War.

Unable to speak or remember now, her book “Soldado Descanso” (”Rest Soldier”) is written in Portuguese, but soon will be translated into English, as the publisher thinks Americans should know about the proud history of Confederate immigrants settling in Brazil, finding a new home here but maintaining many of the traditions they brought from Alabama, Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Arkansas, the Carolinas and Georgia. [snip]

The air is clean and pure. In the far distance, red hills and small dirt roads separate farms. People here live from the service and manufacturing industry.

Almost 150 years ago, Dr. James McFaddon from South Carolina went to Mobile, Ala., and New Orleans to open negotiations with Brazil to migrate, looking for a new home.

He traveled to Brazil and, on his return, wrote a book, “Home Hunting in Brazil,” planting seeds for emigration.

Between 10,000 and 20,000 Americans made the journey, leaving the United States to look into building a new home and life. Today, they live not only in Americana and nearby Santa Barbara, but are scattered all over the hills of the state of Sao Paulo and over several other parts of Brazil, the fifth-largest country in the world.

“Incidents” at US labs

Since 2003, there have been more than 100 incidents at U.S. labs handling the world’s deadliest germs and toxins. The Associated Press has obtained confidential reports detailing the incidents. (Oct.2)

Among the previously undisclosed accidents:

* In Rockville, Md., ferret No. 992, inoculated with bird flu virus, bit a technician at Bioqual Inc. on the right thumb in July. The worker was placed on home quarantine for five days and directed to wear a mask to protect others.

* An Oklahoma State University lab in Stillwater in December could not account for a dead mouse inoculated with bacteria that causes joint pain, weakness, lymph node swelling and pneumonia. The rodent — one of 30 to be incinerated — was never found, but the lab said an employee “must have forgotten to remove the dead mouse from the cage” before the cage was sterilized.

* In Albuquerque, N.M., an employee at the Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute was bitten on the left hand by an infected monkey in September 2006. The animal was ill from an infection of bacteria that causes plague. “When the gloves were removed, the skin appeared to be broken in 2 or 3 places,” the report said. The worker was referred to a doctor, but nothing more was disclosed.

* In Fort Collins, Colo., a worker at a federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention facility found, in January 2004, three broken vials of Russian spring-summer encephalitis virus. Wearing only a laboratory coat and gloves, he used tweezers to remove broken glass and moved the materials to a special container. The virus, a potential bio-warfare agent, could cause brain inflammation and is supposed to be handled in a lab requiring pressure suits that resemble space suits. The report did not say whether the worker became ill. Source

Rush responds to Reid

You would have thought the Senate would have learned not to go up against the “man who runs America” after the amnesty bill fiasco. Heh, you would be wrong.

“I did apologize today to the troops, Senator Reid, for you, and for Media Matters for America. If anybody in this country has been trying to demoralize the troops, it is you, sir, and your members of the Democrat Party. You have waved the white flag of defeat. You have claimed that they cannot win. You are trying to shift the focus from your perception, the perception, accurately, that people have of you and your party, to me, who everyone who has listened to me any length of time whatsoever knows that these allegations are just totally untrue.”

Federal judge confronted with Hillary’s “smoking gun” video

Doug from Upland has been busy. Last night, I read about his trip to the FBI and his subsequent trip to Judge Matz’s chambers to discuss the campaign finance violations that he has investigated.

WND reports on Doug’s visit with the judge…

A federal judge who stated in court Sen. Hillary Clinton had nothing to do with the planning and preparation for a scandal-plagued Hollywood fundraiser, received by hand-delivery yesterday a transcript of a videotape that allegedly captures the New York Democrat committing felonies related to the event.

The transcript, along with a letter demanding a hearing, was hand-delivered to Federal Judge A. Howard Matz by Douglas Cogan, a regular contributor to who has followed the case closely and helped produce a documentary.

As WND reported, the tape – held by the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York from 2001 to 2007 – documents a July 2000 phone call that purportedly shows Clinton taking an active role in the production of the fundraiser.

Business mogul Peter Franklin Paul, who has filed a $17 million fraud lawsuit against Sen. Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, contends the senator’s participation in soliciting performers and planning for the August 2000 Hollywood fundraiser would make his more than $1.2 million in contributions to the event a direct donation to her Senate campaign rather than to a joint fundraising committee. That would violate federal statutes that limit “hard money” contributions to a candidate to $2,000 per person. Knowingly accepting or soliciting $25,000 or more in a calendar year is a felony carrying a prison sentence of up to five years.

Matz, who was appointed by President Clinton, presided over the 2005 trial of Sen. Clinton’s campaign finance director David Rosen who was acquitted of filing false financial reports of the fundraiser.

At the outset, Matz declared, “This isn’t a trial about Senator Clinton.”

Well, not yet, anyway. The wheels of justice …
