Stupid Congress Tricks, part 2

Joe Lavin recognizes a truly great speech during the illustrious congressional career of CfG president Pat Toomey….

….the most ridiculous item was the motion honoring the 50th anniversary of Marshmallow Peeps. Here’s an actual quote from Representative Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania: “Mr. Speaker, I rise to offer congratulations to the confectioners at Just Born, Incorporated, as they celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of their most recognized and celebrated products, not to mention my daughter’s favorite, Marshmallow Peeps.”

Thank you Mr. Toomey. Your contributions to relevant discourse are remarkable.

The Huckabee Difference

Washington Post columnist Michael Gerson talks about the defining difference of Mike Huckabee….

In the 2008 election, the war on terrorism will loom large. But on this issue the distinctions among the Republican candidates — other than the conspiratorial mutterings of Ron Paul and his followers — are relatively small. The contrast comes on domestic policy, and here Huckabee has the strongest general election message of any Republican. Perhaps it is time for religious conservatives to suspend cynical calculation and bank-shot endorsement ploys and reexamine another man from Hope.

During our conversation, Huckabee’s most compelling response concerned his background as a pastor. “There isn’t a social pathology that I wouldn’t be able to put a face to. I’ve talked with a pregnant 14-year-old who hasn’t been able to tell her parents, with a 17-year-old high school student who believes he is gay and doesn’t know how to break the news, with parents who have a son on life support after a motorcycle accident. . . . It makes me a different kind of public official, not as rigid, not blind to problems.”

And that is not a bad thing — in a Republican, in a candidate or in a president. source

No, it’s not. Not bad at all.

In a campaign that has the bean counters and silk stockings at Club for Growth attempting to define conservatism along the lines of narrow self-interest, Huckabee is the one candidate who combines a solid executive record with real life experiences of every day Americans. The momentum continues to grow.

Yep, his CHL, his history of going hunting in the duck calling world headquarters since he was a child, and I heard him say in a radio interview, before he was so threatening, that he has friends with full-auto weapons.
CFG has traditionally served as an ally to the GOP. If they are behaving this way now, how will they behave when Mike gets the nomination?
The attacks on Mike were bound to come, as he threatened other’s chances, but expected them to come mainly from the left.
Has CFG come out in support of any candidate yet?

I would prefer to view CfG as an ally. You would think with all the Soros money out there fuelling the rhetorical flames that CfG would quit going after Republicans.

his own concealed carry permit speaks pretty loudly about the 2nd.

Ya’know…CFG has their role to play, in informing people, and I’m sure they have their devotees that view taxes as their number one issue. I have looked at some of their articles, over the past few years, and they serve a function of focusing on this issue.
As a conservative, of course I am concerned about taxes and wasteful spending, but I don’t view CFG’s focus as the single defining issue for me.
I’m not really a single issue voter, and view the big picture, and realize that there will always have to be compromises, but we will always differ on what to compromise.
Personally, I will not compromise on 2nd Amendment issues, and if there is one issue that I am singularly focused on, it is that one. I haven’t seen the NRA ranking on Mike, but based on how he behaved and what he has stated, I’m sure he will get an “A.”

Oh no, it’s Jooooooooo cooties

Iran’s representative to the annual gathering of the International Co-operative Alliance held in Singapore last week fled the conference and hurriedly returned to Tehran after coming in contact with the Israeli delegation.

One of 80 nations attending the conference, the Israelis saw the event as an opportunity to try to create dialogue and possible economic cooperation between the Jewish state and the Islamic Republic.

During the course of the opening event, Israeli representative Rami Mendel approached the Iranian and asked for material regarding cooperation with his country. As the two men sat down to a cup of coffee, Mendel revealed his nationality to the Iranian, who after several seconds of apparent shock and dismay hastily left the hall.

Participants at the conference said the Iranian never returned, even for the closing ceremony. It was later learned that he had returned to Tehran, fearing another encounter with the Israeli delegation. Source

Good grief.

The Israelis didn’t even get a chance to try out their mind-reading techniques.
