Fla newspaper publishes problem teacher list

From AP

A confidential, nationwide list of 24,500 teachers who have been punished for a wide array of offenses was made available to the public Friday by a Florida newspaper.

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune created a searchable database of the teachers’ names after waiting for years to gain access to the list. The paper began seeking the material as part of its earlier reporting on teacher sexual misconduct in Florida. It obtained the list from the Florida Department of Education.

The list, gathered and maintained by the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification, does not provide any information on why any of the teachers were disciplined. Sexual misconduct, financial misconduct, criminal convictions and other misbehavior all can bring disciplinary actions against teacher licenses.

A nationwide Associated Press investigation earlier this year sought five years of state disciplinary actions against teachers and the reasons behind them. In the years the AP studied, 2001 to 2005, roughly one-quarter of all disciplinary actions against teachers involved sexual misconduct.

The AP’s seven-month investigation found 2,570 educators whose teaching credentials were revoked, denied, surrendered or sanctioned following allegations of sexual misconduct.

The association’s list is the only nationwide effort by school systems to track teachers who get into trouble, but the association does not make the information available to the public. The group is a voluntary, nonprofit organization of state education agencies.

About time. I imagine this database will get quite a workout over the Holidays.

This is the World Famous Friday Open Thread. A Free-Speech Zone.

Comments, questions, links, trackbacks, Holiday greetings, and shout-outs are welcome.

  1. Awhile back while hanging Christmas lights I told n2l about the big display a Redding man had to move. Well it seems it was a little bit bigger deal than I thought. It made the WSJ and the Baltimore Sun. Here’s the part about Redding.

Jim McDilda’s holiday display last year included a 28-foot lighted arch, a 50-foot tree, 50,000 lights and dozens of animated silhouettes. The spectacle — he needed a crane to set it all up — lit up the sky and drew thousands of gawking visitors to his Redding, Calif., house.

But nearby neighbors weren’t so thrilled. Cars, limos and tour buses clogged the cul-de-sac, and trash was strewn across lawns. Christmas music blasting from McDilda’s display kept neighbors awake. They complained to the city, which required that McDilda get a special-events permit and demanded that he remove the nearby cargo containers he used to store the display most of the year. After months of sniping between McDilda and the city, he decided to throw in the towel. This year, his house is unadorned.

“They gave me so much trouble, they took the fun out of it,” he said.

In Redding, Calif., at least, the fracas caused by McDilda’s holiday light display came to a satisfactory conclusion. After he decided against decking out his yard this year, local merchants from a city revitalization group asked him to put the display in an outdoor area downtown, offering to defray some of the costs. The display has drawn crowds to downtown, and McDilda has been able to spread holiday cheer.

“I think the one who was happiest was my wife,” he said. “She was getting really tired of people looking in our windows.”

  2. Henh.
That was one big display, alright.
I imagine his neighbors were plenty PO-ed.

  3. Don’t know what to say about those teachers.

  4. Oh yes they were. Can’t say I blame ’em. But then again, I think more than three people is a crowd. 👿

  5. Beto, I feel like run over dog poop.
I don’t know what I’ve got, I think it’s allergies, but had a sweaty feverish night of restlessness, and am still hurting. It could be some type of flu, but I think the worst is over.

  6. I know what you mean, Robert D.
I wouldn’t want all that noise and people tramping around outside my windows either.

  7. Found an interesting story on a NOLA blog about the protests in that city.
    Rent-a-mobs….phffft!

  8. Gonna fix a cup of red zinger tea, wrap that afghan around me again, and watch Combat. This episode, they are trying to rescue a paratrooper hanging from a church spire.

  9. Hanoi Jane turns 70 years old today.
Of course, that’s 490 in dog years.

  10. “490 in dog years” 😀

  11. Mitt Romney went a step further in a 1978 interview with the Boston Herald. Talking about the Mormon Church and racial discrimination, he said: “My father and I marched with Martin Luther King Jr. through the streets of Detroit.”

Yeah, and I was in the canoe with Jimmy Carter when the giant rabbit attacked.

  12. Well…the rabbit that attacked him was running from me and my pack of beagles.

  13. Don’t think it is/was staph, beto. There was upper respiratory distress involved.

  14. She’s an old dog, fo’sho, and you know what they say about an old dog.

In November 1970, in a speech to University of Michigan students, Fonda said, “If you understood what communism was, you would hope, you would pray on your knees that we would some day become Communist.”

Shortly thereafter at Duke University in North Carolina she said, “I, a socialist, think that we should strive toward a socialist society, all the way to communism.”

A year later Fonda said at the University of Texas, “We’ve got to establish a socialist economic structure that will limit private profit-oriented businesses. Whether the transition is peaceful depends on the way our present governmental leaders react.”

As the bumper sticker says, I’ll forgive Jane Fonda, when the Jews forgive Hitler.

  15. Speaking of old dogs.

Hillary Had No Role in Irish Peace, Despite Bill’s Claims

Recently, as only Hillary can do, she claimed that she was “deeply involved in the Irish peace process.” Bill has also picked up the theme, citing her “independent” role in resolving the century-old conflict as “experience” with which to justify a White House run.

How odd that Hillary forgot to mention her pivotal role in Ireland just four years ago, when she wrote her $8 million memoir, Living History. There, she told a very different story.

  16. They can’t he’p it, they are both pathological, and this is supposed to be the run up to her coronation, not a campaign.

  17. I think their past is catching her real quick.

  18. It hasn’t slowed them down for almost thirty years.

  19. we’ll see

  20. back later 🙂

  21. So what’s Swampie’s excuse, now that school is out?

  22. Back in a bit.

  23. It Is real close to Christmas….

  24. I still don’t think so, beto. I’ve had this before, and it is either cedar pollen or mold. It was really damp and cold here last week, and I noticed the mold growing like crazy on the sidewalks around here.
Appetite is good, just a come and go yuckiness. Tavist D seemed to really help.

  25. Henh…don’t drink.
Instead of my usual sweet iced tea, I’m having hot herbal tea tonight.

  27. We went shopping and bought gifts for 3 grandkids today, looked for something for the son in law that I was not able to find, looked at a decorated house that is a finalist in the national contest for over decorating for Christmas in my town, and a decorated street caught my attention in Jacksonville and I had SwampMan turn around and turn down it (no mean feat). It was an old trailer park with every trailer an exuberant display of lights and Santas and reindeer and helicopters and Nativity scenes that was fun and appeared more attractive to both myself and SwampMan than the carefully planned and color coordinated display of excess at the mansion that we had seen earlier.

  28. And don’t be sayin’ “you can take the girl out of the trailer park but…..” because I’ve never actually lived in a trailer park.

/Those were too high class for me.

  29. Now, back to decorating.

  30. Henh.
Good to see your nic, Swampie.
I’m gonna have one more cup of tea, and hit the bunk, after I slather some mentholatum all over my chest.

Yep. It can be anything from telling administration to F off to not repaying student loans in a timely fashion (which, on a teacher’s salary, is not easy to do. I did know a teacher in Arizona that lived in his car because his salary wasn’t enough to cover apartment rent at $18,000 a year @ 10 years ago.) If a teacher gets a DUI, that can cause disciplinary action/dismissal. A teacher was recently fired from school because she was seen drinking a beer at a convenience store during her lunch break by a parent.

  32. Ewwwww with the chest rub stuff. Swampman swears that my respiratory distress could be greatly alleviated if I rubbed VapoRub all over my chest.

  33. Well doesn’t that figure? Swamps drops by, and nobody is home.
Hey Swamps, I can hook you up with a trailer, in a park, no less. 😛

  34. It helps Swampie, it really do.
Once you get past the icky-sticky feeling, the purgative vapors do their thing.
/wear an old t-shirt to bed

  35. And everybody shows up in it takes me to type . lol

  36. Thanks, Robert D! I have to caution you, though, that two smallish tornadoes have come across my property in Florida and 1 large one in Georgia, so you might not want to place me in the vicinity of a trailer park.

  37. If I ever smear myself down with that sticky stinky stuff, I’ll wear SwampMan’s T-shirt to bed.

  38. One thing about wimmins and tornadoes, one of them will eventually get your trailer home.

  39. Long as he don’t know til in the morning, I say go for it.

  40. Good point! I rescind my offer. (sorry, you’re to much of a risk)

  41. Robert D, I think she is high risk and high maintenance.

  42. High maintenance? I thought she could DO the maintenance. Dangit……..(i need to pay more attention to detail)

  43. ROFL. I dunno about that high maintenance….SwampMan was saying he did NOT know what to get me for Christmas because unlike most women, I would prefer a new shovel to jewelry and the emerald necklace he got me a few years ago has never been worn.

  44. I just got white latex calk all over my green shirt. Dang. I liked that green shirt. I might have to try and get some green paint and see how paintable that calk is.

  45. See what I mean?

  46. Sigh. I thought that the calk would have dried enough to paint by now, but noooooooo. Just on my shirt.

  47. Have you ever noticed that when you eat pistachio nuts you can’t do anything else productive?

  48. I haven’t been following the politicians much; are they all wishing us a merry Christmas now? Religion is very much alive and well where I come from.

  49. Heh. Thanks, Beto. Or at least nobody will notice as everything will be a greasy black color now.

  50. Yes Swamps they are, but only Huck is getting slammed for it.

  51. Are you having to shell them to eat them, or are they shelled?
    /makes a difference

  52. Diesel will work well too.

  53. Are you having to shell them to eat them, or are they shelled?
    /makes a difference

    Real funny……..

  54. Fox played all of the Christmas videos back to back to back yesterday, and boy what a difference. They saw that, despite Mike’s opponents flailing on him for doing his, that it was the right thing to do, except Mike’s was the only genuine Merry Christmas ad, it was thrown together in two takes, and wasn’t originally intended for TV, but for his website.
They all are trying to catch up, in their own pathetic ways.

  55. Henh…well it do.

  56. I say roll the shirt up, and lay it on the porch for the kitties to snuggle on.

  57. sorry, that was Orange Oil on the spot
Then sunlight dish liquid to clean the OO
    Painters Trick

    Well THAT makes a difference!!

  58. Dang!
    Just got the weather report.
It’s 62 right now, this time Saturday night it will at freezing, after a day of strong winds and rain.
    /bleccch

  59. Night y’all.

  60. I’ve been wanting to plant a few acres of chestnut trees but my land is too darn wet (heavy clay soil) during the rainy season. The 100 acres in Georgia would have been perfect (dangit).

  61. Haven’t seen that one, beto.
I’m still steamed over the wimpy men in the ADT commercials.
    Dude…where is your gun?

  62. Car lust? Wanting a new car just took on a whole new meaning.

  63. Goodnight, n2l.

  64. gnite n2l.

  65. I guess this means cold weather will be back my way again too.

  66. gnite mongo

  67. Sure glad you don’t live in 78704.

  68. G’nite Mongo.

    AAAAAGH! Christmas eve is MONDAY!

/everybody will be here expecting food and presents and shit. I thought I had an extra day in there.

  69. Dude…where is your gun?

    I’m with you there.

  70. Sounds like some people need their asses shot.

  71. Goodnight, and if you see me here before Christmas, kick my butt back into the kitchen.

  72. Christmas will be less delightful this year. Mrs D is flying to St. Louis Monday to attend to her sisters funeral arrangements. We found out yesterday afternoon. talk about bad timing……

  73. G’nite to all who are going to bed. I think I’ll surf a bit.

  80. I hope everyone’s Christmas is happy, safe and that God blesses each and every one of you.

I’m posting some trackback links again since some of them aren’t making it through for probably several reasons. Sometimes on blogs all that shows up is a message saying “The World According To Carl pinged this post” with no information on what the trackback was although others’ trackbacks has all their pertinent info. Other times some of my trackbacks might show up but instead of having some of the text at the beginning of my entry, it has only my trackback list which is at the END of my post. Weird, ain’t it? Maybe some sort of WordPress incompatibility issue or something.

Anyway, I’m no computer expert so I’m just gonna have to live with it and sometimes post my trackback URLs in the comments section. I asked as many blogs on the Linkfest Haven trackback lists if this was acceptable and thus far all have said it was fine. So I thank all the blog owners for allowing me to do so. I don’t normally do this every time but only on the ocassions where I think my posts to trackback are important enough or interesting enough to share. Anyway here are a few more entries of mine I invite you to visit and leave comments:

  83. Bush is the devil and the devil made me do it

The former chief executive officer of Fannie Mae says the Bush administration helped orchestrate an accounting scandal that cost him his job and that he wants to use White House documents to defend himself in a shareholder lawsuit.

Franklin Raines, who served as President Clinton’s budget director, argues in court documents that the Bush administration felt the government-chartered agency wielded too much power in the mortgage industry. His attorneys say the White House pushed regulators to weaken Fannie Mae and triggered a $6 billion accounting scandal.
