McCain Must Go…A Rant!

Originally, I was going to write a hit piece on Sen. McCain, as I can’t believe he has been resurrected by the media as a potential GOP nominee, but in researching the multitude of reasons I am opposed to him, I found things I didn’t know and others I had forgotten about. As a result, trying to craft a meticulous piece, loaded with links to substantiate my argument, I felt the urge to unload a rant too strong.
Before any thongs get twisted, let me state clearly, I have always respected his service to our country as a Navy officer, and as an elected official. Few in our society could accomplish those things, even if they wanted to. I also appreciate his support for our military, and the surge that President Bush was able to initiate with Gen. Petraeus.
My grievances with him are serious matters that have effected this country, and many will for a long time. That he could seriously still be considered a strong candidate with his record in the Senate, and his personality, baffle and anger me.
Here is a partial list of the many things he’s been involved in.
1)The Keating Five scandal, of which he was the only Republican.
2)McCain-Feingold or campaign finance reform. The pimp of the Democrats, George Soros, thanks him…I don’t.
3)Sarbanes-Oxley. Thanks for sending IPO’s overseas Senator, our investment community will never be the same.
4)Comprehensive Immigration Reform.
5)Opposed the Bush Tax cuts, the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001, and the Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003.
6)Opposed definitions of torture by the Bush administration.
7)Believes in man made global warming.
There are a few other things about him that really irritate me, and that is his temper, and his diarrhea of the mouth. Not as many know about his temper, as he has courted the liberal media as a ‘maverick,’ and has become something of a darling to them when he speaks ill of his party or President Bush. However, for those who have known him for a while, have worked with him, or opposed him, his temper is legendary, or as this gentleman said:

“He is a vicious person,” LeBoutillier said. “Nearly all the Republican senators endorsed Bush because they knew McCain from serving with him in the Senate. They so disliked him that they wouldn’t support him. They have been on the hard end of his behavior.”

Here are a few other comments about his behavioral traits when he is angry:

“As portrayed by the mainstream media, McCain is an engaging war hero, a man of political moderation positioned between the left and the right,” Kessler wrote. “But to insiders who know him, McCain has an irrational, explosive side that make many of them question whether he is fit to serve as president and be commander in chief. Nowhere is that sentiment stronger than in the Senate, where McCain has few friends or supporters. In fact, when McCain ran for the Republican nomination for president in 2000, only four Republican senators endorsed him.”

“I have witnessed incidents where he has used profanity at colleagues and exploded at colleagues,” Kessler quoted former Senator Bob Smith, a New Hampshire Republican who served with McCain on the Senate Armed Services Committee and on Republican policy committees, as saying. “He would disagree about something and then explode. It was incidents of irrational behavior. We’ve all had incidents where we have gotten angry, but I’ve never seen anyone act like that.”

Perhaps some of you may remember McCain’s reaction to losing the South Carolina primary to President Bush in 2000, I certainly do, and it impressed me then that McCain is quite possibly unhinged. There was a widely read article concerning McCain’s concession speech to then Gov. Bush, by Jeff Greenfield of CNN, titled McCain’s Harsh Words, where he penned this phrase:

On Saturday night, Sen. John McCain, stung by his double-digit defeat in South Carolina, gave a concession speech written by a pen dipped in acid.

Many believe, me among them, that it was McCain’s bitterness at President Bush, after his defeat, that caused him to oppose the President’s agenda. McCain has been known to say he regrets the angry comments he makes, and I’ll give him that. One example is his attacks on the Christian right, after his loss in South Carolina in 2000, where he was extremely critical of Jerry Falwell, but a few years later apologized with Reverend Falwell, and even spoke at a commencement ceremony at Falwell’s Liberty University. But his grievances with Christian conservatives goes back much further than 2000. Does the name Paul Weyrich ring a bell? Mr. Weyrich founded the Heritage Foundation in 1973, co-founded Christian Voice in 1977, and co-founded the Moral Majority in 1979. Beyond those organizations, he has helped create dozens of councils and organizations that promote conservatiism, and he was instrumental in grassroots organizations that helped create the support that became the Reagan coalition. When McCain got angry at this icon of the conservative movement for opposing John Tower(a Democrat) for Sec of Defense, McCain called him “a pompous self-serving son of a bitch.” One of those pot calling the kettle black moments.
Then there is his mouth, or rather, his inability to control it over the strange things that go on in his head.
Take for example this charming joke about a retirement center in Arizona, Leisure World, which McCain referred to as Seizure World. Or this knee-slapper, “The nice thing about Alzheimer’s is you get to hide your own Easter eggs.” Then there was this joke that the liberal media wouldn’t report on, “”Do you know why Chelsea Clinton is so ugly? Because Janet Reno is her father.” There are more, many more examples, but you get the idea, he has no control over his inner monologue, he has diarrhea of the mouth. This is fine as long as he is some harmless Uncle that you only see at holidays, weddings, and funerals, but we are talking about a man that is in a position to run against very weak Democrat candidates, and could conceivably become President.
Does someone who has a record of going against the will of his own party, and the people that support it, deserve the nomination? I say HELL NO!
Does a man that needs to use good judgement, be predictable in his reactions to a crisis, and diplomatic with allies and enemies alike, yet cannot control his temper or his tongue, deserve consideration as the leader of the Free World, and the most powerful political office in the World? Not by a DAMN SIGHT!
That he is even still in the race at this stage is baffling enough, considering that just a few months ago, he had to lay off nearly all of his staff, due to a lack of funds. His resurgence is mostly due to one good performance in New Hampshire, which he also had in 2000, and because Michigan and South Carolina are coming up, where Democrats and Independents can vote in the Republican primaries in those states, and that the Old Media still loves to promote his divisive party politics as a ‘maverick.”
I plea with all of you, and with God himself, don’t put our party, and indeed our country in a position of electing such an unsteady…no, tottering fool, that can neither hold his tongue when necessary, nor of holding fire on friendlies when he is disagreed with.
I have faith that he will be halted by the reasonable minds of conservative voters on Super Duper Tuesday. I pray that will be the case, other wise I would have to consider breaking my own vow to vote for the nominee of the Republican party, irrespective of who it is.
