Nic and Carla tie the knot

nicandcarlasarkozy.jpgPARIS – They had a glitzy, jet-setting courtship, but when it came time for the wedding, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and former supermodel Carla Bruni opted for a simple, classic ceremony — and the bride wore white.
Sarkozy, 53, and Bruni, 40, were married Saturday in a small private ceremony at the presidential Elysee Palace, less than three months after they reportedly first met, and less than four months after his divorce from the previous first lady, Cecilia.

The newlyweds said in a statement only that they tied the knot “in the presence of their families in the strictest privacy.” The mayor who performed the ceremony filled in the details.

nicandcarlasarkozy2.jpg“The bride wore white; she was ravishing, as usual,” Francois Lebel, mayor of Paris’ eighth arrondissement, or neighborhood, told Europe-1 radio. The groom wore a suit and tie, and he “wasn’t bad either,” Lebel said.

About 20 friends and family members attended the 20-minute official ceremony in an Elysee drawing room, Le Bel said. He referred to Sarkozy and Bruni as “young newlyweds” and said the wedding showed “great simplicity and apparently a lot of affection between the spouses.”

Tax cuts for the rich

You’ve heard it for years. Depending upon your point of view, it’s either one of the more disingenuous claims of the populist Left, or it explains the unholy alliance of power and money of corporate America with the wealthy oligarchy.

You’ve examined the veracity of the claim, and answered it to your own satisfaction.

There is only one reason the Left continues to trot out the “tax cuts for the rich” theme: it works.

The reason it works is equally simple.

It is true.

It’s also false.

There are infinite possibilities to spin “the truth” from both sides of the political spectrum, with each side scoring points, discrediting the position of their opponent, and making convincing arguments of the “rightness” of their position.

TCFTR is an emotional, almost gutteral indictment that will never be successfully countered by a scholarly rebuttal, even with a little snark mixed in. That hasn’t stopped the Right from trying. Stephen Moore has tried, and tried, and tried. His case is persuasive – if you want it to be persuasive, and shameless propoaganda – if you are so inclined to believe. Largely ignored during the primary season, it will again become the Left’s weapon of choice in the general election season.

John McCain will not counter it. He believes it. He used the rhetoric of Left to oppose the Tax Reform Act of 2001.

Mitt Romney cannot counter it. A Harvard Business School response will fall upon deaf ears. Romney knows this, and he won’t even try.

Mike Huckabee can. He is, in fact, the only one who can. The way to respond to an emotional, populist charge is with a response that is equal parts of emotion and populism, and delivered with conviction. Huckabee can do it with the credibility that will be necessary to make it stick. And, once successfully countered, it is put to bed, once and for all.

The question is, “Will he?” It is a general election theme. The rewards for rolling out a tactic before time might decrease it’s effectiveness, but as time grows short, it may be the last card that Huckabee has left to play.

Interesting tidbit: “Who pays income taxes?”

Winning in Iraq

One of the great pleasures I have found while hanging out at Free Republic has been reading some of the outstanding investigative pieces from contributors like Fedora, Hal 9000, Doug from Upland, and jveritas.

Jveritas translated a number of Saddam’s secret papers that were published on the internet by the Defense Department.  His insight is unique, and his patriotism is unquestioned.  This one, just posted by jveritas, tells the story of the War in Iraq, as translated from an internet forum …

In a very surprising thread posted tonight on Ekhlaas terrorist forum, the largest terrorist forum on the internet, the author of the thread was calling for urgent help to the terrorists in Iraq. He said that the last bastion controlled by the terrorists in Baghdad has fell in the hands of the US and Iraqi forces. He described the situation in Iraq as very dangerous and very difficult. He said that weapons are few but men are even fewer.

This thread on Ekhlaas terrorist forum is a very surprising admission of defeat and confirms without any doubt that they are running out of terrorists males in particular the foreign non Iraqi terrorists who used to conduct massive suicide terrorist attacks. Today we saw the terrorists using two mentally retarded women to unwillingly conduct terrorist attacks in Baghdad market by detonating them from a distance. Just six months ago the terrorists were saying that they must never use women in “Jihad”, in the last few weeks we have seen more suicide terrorist attacks conducted by women and now we are seeing them using mentally handicapped women to do their evil deeds.

In December 2007, I posted a thread on Free Republic about a speech by Al Qaeda spokesman in Iraq admitting that no more than two hundreds foreign terrorists were left in Iraq Al Qaeda Confession: Only 200 Foreign Terrorists are left in Iraq . His statement caused a lot of angst among the terrorists forum, but it now appears that surprisingly his admission was truthful.

We are winning this war against Al Qaeda in Iraq and we are winning it big. The terrorists have been utterly defeated and driven out of Anbar, Baghdad, and Diyala. Their remaining and defeated forces fled to Northern Iraq, and to the City of Mosul in particular where the Iraqi and US troops are going to conduct an eminent decisive attack against them.

God bless our brave troops.

Thank you jveritas.  I appreciate your invaluable work.

McCain’s money dilemma

There won’t be too many conservatives who will sympathize with John McCain’s money-problem-turned-ethical-dilemma.

As the author and proponent of much of the tangled web of campaign finance rules and regulations, to see the Arizona Senator reaching the spending limits imposed by his agreement to accept public financing for his primary campaign is sweet irony for some, and case of mccainenfreude for others.

“At this point, (McCain) is in the matching fund system. Right now, there is no mechanism for the commission to turn off the spigot,” said Marc Elias, a campaign finance lawyer who represented the aborted presidential campaign of Democrat Chris Dodd.

On the other hand, Paul Ryan of the Campaign Legal Center (whose founder, Trevor Potter, happens to be the McCain campaign’s lawyer) argues that as long as McCain sends the FEC a letter opting out of the public funds, he can ignore the limits. source

Ryan’s argument is essentially a replay of Al Gore’s “No controlling legal authority” kerfluffle. But, Elias argues that opting out would be a clear violation of the law. The situation guarantees continued employment for scores of legal talking heads who will be sure to dominate cable news if McCain decides to push the envelope.

And, the final irony, McCain’s only other viable option for private financing would be to embrace the 527 model, whose very existence has been a bain to McCain’s crusade to craft legislation in the campaign finance arena. Otherwise, his campaign would be caught in the same “dark period” that doomed Bob Dole in 1996: unable to respond to the well-financed attacks of the Democrats.
