Obama grant being probed

from Chicago Sun-Times

A $100,000 state grant for a botanic garden in Englewood that then-state Sen. Barack Obama awarded in 2001 to a group headed by a onetime campaign volunteer is now under investigation by the Illinois attorney general amid new questions, prompted by Chicago Sun-Times reports, about whether the money might have been misspent.

The garden was never built. And now state records obtained by the Sun-Times show $65,000 of the grant money went to the wife of Kenny B. Smith, the Obama 2000 congressional campaign volunteer who heads the Chicago Better Housing Association, which was in charge of the project for the blighted South Side neighborhood.

Smith wrote another $20,000 in grant-related checks to K.D. Contractors, a construction company that his wife, Karen D. Smith, created five months after work on the garden was supposed to have begun, records show. K.D. is no longer in business.

Although decried by Chicago mayor Bill Daley, McCain’s recent ad about Chicago machine-politics seems to be right on the mark.

All together now, look real surprised.

  1. I’m shocked! Shocked, I say! How in the world could the guy that in only four short years nearly passed Chris Dodd as Chief Piggie at the Freddie and Fannie Trough have been a part of such a penny-ante bit of corruption?

I guess his only excuse has to be that the pig trough was smaller in Chicago, eh?

  2. I don’t think this probe will go anywhere, do you?

It’s just about a done deal. Get used to it if you can.

  3. Mick is right, nothing will happen

  4. Blagojevich might be indicted.
Rezko’s sentencing is due in a few weeks. He was promised a reduction in sentence, if he helped the Feds.

  5. Dopiness and changiness.
    B-HO brown shirts in Missouri.

KMOV aired a story last night, that stated that St. Louis County Circuit Attorney Bob McCulloch and St. Louis City Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce, both Obama supporters, are threatening to bring criminal libel charges against anyone who levels what turns out to be false criticisms of their chosen candidate for President.

I think these public officials should be charged with official suppression, if they try and silence B-HO critics with libel charges.

  6. Sounds like some creative community organizing going on there in the windy city.

  7. Dopiness and changiness.

I heard that today and could not believe my ears. What about lies against McCain? What About the lies and slander about Bush? I hope they bring it. Could be interesting………

  8. What a bunch of bull. Obama is being smeared because the recipient of a grant he authorized may have misused the funds they received. Big deal if over a fifteen year period they donated a whopping $550 to Obama campaigns. This isn’t at all like the $112,000 Charled Keating contributed to the campaign funds of the Keating 5, one of which is none other than John McCain, to persuade them to pressure regulators to back off on their investigation of Lincoln Savings & Loan, which up until last week was the largest savings & loan failure in the nations history. I guess there was nothing wrong with McCain trying to help out Keating, given Cindy McCain had a $350,000 investment in a Keating mall.

  9. MAY have misused the funds?

Perhaps you better read that story.

And perhaps you better have some facts to back up your allegations.

  10. That has been investigated. This hasn’t been…..yet.

  11. I think you better amend that to read “this won’t be….either”.
