In Other News, Gravity Still Pulls People Downwards

The Electoral College has yet to convene to officially elect Barack Obama as the next president of the United States, and the myths surrounding his campaign are already falling.  Aside from a wonderful opportunity to say “I told you so” to the liberals in our lives, this will provide wonderful fodder for the next four years.   (“Hope and change:” the new “I did not have sexual relations with that woman.”) The latest: the Campaign Finance Institute analysed the donations to the Obama campaign and found that the unprecedented amount of cash was not given by small Americans who were inspired by Obama’s greatness.  (Hat tip: TigerHawk.) A separate study found that perpetual motion machines do not actually work as advertised.

The reality: 26% of Obama’s $640 million (roughly $150 million) came from donors who gave $200 or less.  (Approximately 25% of George Bush’s donations came from small donors.)  The remaining $450 million – more than George Bush, John Kerry, and John McCain raised – came from people who gave more than $200.   Another 27% of Obama’s donations came from people who gave between $200 and $1,000 (here); this still leaves about than $300 million from large, wealthy donors – which is roughly what McCain raised from all sources combined, including $84 million for public financing.

The Obama campaign was required to keep track of each and every donation, and report the name of any person whose total donations exceeded $200.  Given that the campaign disabled the security features on its web site, which enabled people to give under fictitious names and with personal information that did not correspond to the credit card which was used, we can’t even be sure that all of those people actually were under the $200 limit.

Perhaps the news that the Obama campaign was not funded by small donors who gave their hard-earned money (during one of the worst economies in decades), but rather by big money, will prompt the FEC to reconsider its decision to not investigate Obama.  (After all, some of the FEC’s rationale – aside from the admission that the audit would be embarrasing to a sitting President – was that the huge number of donors lessened any benefit of fraud.)

Obviously, Obama will enter office with a tremendous debt to pay off – not monetary, but political.  Ideally, the American public would have known about this before the election, when it was actually possible to not vote the #2 all-time recipient of funds from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, for example, into office, at a time when the fall of FM/FM created one of the worst financial disasters in history.  We will find out (the hard way) who paid for Obama’s presidency and what he owes them.  Unions and their PACs? Overseas moneyLobbyists?  (More lobbyists?)

Naturally, the Obama-pologists are out in full force.  Among the criticisms of CFI’s study: the figure for “small” donations was an arbitrary $200 (which ignores the fact that this is the threshold for reporting, and also a sensible one, in that many Americans have an extra $100 or so lying around, but not an extra thousand dollars); the Obama campaign was longer (as if that somehow changes what big donors believe they are owed); and, of course, the ceaseless comparisons on a percentage basis, which ignores the fact that Obama raised a frightening amount of money from big-time donors, who will come equipped with their own demands upon our new president.

Breaking: Sylvester Croom resigns at MSU

Just breaking from ESPN, embattled head football coach, Sylvester Croom, has resigned from Mississippi State.

Sylvester Croom has resigned as head coach of Mississippi State, ESPN.com has learned.

Ole Miss humiliated Mississippi State 45-0 on Friday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in the most lopsided Egg Bowl in 37 years. The Bulldogs finishing with 37 total yards and three different Mississippi State quarterbacks were sacked 11 times.

Despite the eight-win season a year ago and all the positive gains Croom made with the program, the Bulldogs have had only one winning season since 2000.

Yada, yada, yada, “positive gains with the program” …Riiiight. At least they didn’t say the “Croom is building the program the right way.” Arrrgggh.

So Long Sly. Thanks for everything. See you in the funny papers.

WFFOT: Fire Sylvester Croom Now

Update: Croom resigns
fire_sylvester_croom_256
It is 31 – 0 at halftime in the Egg Bowl.

Another humiliating loss for the MSU Bulldogs.

If I have to hear another announcer drone on about how “Croom is doing it the right way,” or some other such happy-sounding BS, I think I will barf.

Croom has had 5 years to do it, right way or not. His teams can’t run, can’t pass, can’t block, can’t tackle, can’t kick, and can’t compete in the SEC.

Other than that, Croom is a great coach.

It is time to Fire Sylvester Croom.

FRIDAY LINKAGE:

Malls, hotels next victims in new mortgage crisis — The full scope of the housing meltdown isn’t clear and already there are ominous signs of a new crisis — one that could turn out the lights on malls, hotels and storefronts nationwide.

The Hedge Fund Collapse — As many as half the funds that existed earlier this year, when the industry topped out at 10,000 funds in business, could fail or be wound up in a year’s time, industry watchers estimate. Assets under management at hedge funds are falling as investors rush to pull money out of good funds and bad. In September, investors took out an estimated $41 billion from the sector, the largest monthly outflow of money since experts began tracking numbers. October looked even worse.

“Something is happening of historic proportions” — I think there is something monumentally large afoot, and I do not believe it is just a banking crisis, or a mortgage crisis, or a credit crisis. Yes these exist, but they are merely single facets on a very large gemstone that is only now coming into a sharper focus.

Something of historic proportions is happening. I can sense it because I know how it feels, smells, what it looks like, and how people react to it. Yes, a perfect storm may be brewing, but there is something happening within our country that has been evolving for about ten – fifteen years. The pace has dramatically quickened in the past two.

What this depression could look like — look back 135 years the current economic woes look a lot like what my 96-year-old grandmother still calls “the real Great Depression.” She pinched pennies in the 1930s, but she says that times were not nearly so bad as the depression her grandparents went through. That crash came in 1873 and lasted more than four years. It looks much more like our current crisis.

Government bailout hits $8.5 trillion:
— The federal government committed an additional $800 billion to two new loan programs on Tuesday, bringing its cumulative commitment to financial rescue initiatives to a staggering $8.5 trillion, according to Bloomberg News.

That sum represents almost 60 percent of the nation’s estimated gross domestic product.

Citi says price of gold could go over $2000 next year — The bank said the damage caused by the financial excesses of the last quarter century was forcing the world’s authorities to take steps that had never been tried before.

This gamble was likely to end in one of two extreme ways: with either a resurgence of inflation; or a downward spiral into depression, civil disorder, and possibly wars. Both outcomes will cause a rush for gold.

ROPMA

One thousand Christians were today trapped inside the Coptic Orthodox Church of the Virgin Mary in West Ain Shams,Cairo, after more than twenty thousand Muslims attacked them with stones and butane gas cylinders. The Church’s priest Father Antonious said that the situation is extremely dangerous.

The Muslim mob that attacked the church blocked both sides of the street and encircled the church building, broke its doors and demolished its entire first floor. The mob were chanting Jihad verses as well as slogans saying “we will demolish the church” and “We sacrifice our blood and souls, we sacrifice ourselves for you, Islam”, while the entrapped Christians chanted “Lord have mercy”.

The incident started on the occasion of the inauguration of the Church today, when the Muslims hastily established a Mosque in the early hours of this morning, by taking over the first floor of a newly-built building facing the Church and started praying there.

When the security forces tried to disperse the mob, they went to nearby homes and shops owned by Christians, and were armed with sticks, butane, knives and other sharp objects. Witnesses said the mob included children from as young as 8-years old to men of over 50-years old, in addition to women.

The Church building was originally a factory that was adapted into its present state, the matter which took over five years to complete and to get the necessary permissions from the authorities to have a Church established.

Not long ago, a commenter was trying to make the case that Islam is no different than Christianity. In fact, all one had to do was to hop aboard a time machine and see even worse acts than described above committed by Christians during the Crusades.

Unfortunately, my solar panels can’t generate the 1.21 gigawatts necessary for time travel, so I am left with making contemporary comparisons.

One of the grandaughters came outside to tell me, “Grandpa! Preznit Owambo is on television.”

I tuned in just in time to hear Owambo tell us, “the economy is likely to get worse before it gets better.”

The war is over

The war in Iraq is over.

We won.

Michael Yon says so.

Through time, trust and bonds have been built between the US and Iraqi soldiers, police and citizens. The United States has a new ally in Iraq. And if both sides continue to nurture this bond, it will create a permanent partnership of mutual benefit.

Surely, one could pick up a brush and approach a blank canvas using colors from the palette of truth, and, with a cursory glance, smear Iraq to look like a Third World swamp. But Iraq is a complicated tapestry with great depth and subtle beauty. This land and its people have great potential to become a regional learning center of monumental importance.

Iraqis are tired of war and ready to get back to school, to business and to living life as it should be.

A Libertarian Defense of Social Conservatism, By Randall Hoven

I’m still searching for the mythical creature that is the “financially conservative, socially liberal” politician. In virtually every case, the pro-abortion or pro-gay marriage politician is the first to vote against a tax cut, the first to vote for more spending and quick to compromise principles on any issue there is.

Using the National Journal’s ratings of Senators in 2007 , the correlation coefficient between “economic” scores and “social” scores is 90%. That means they almost always go together; financial conservatives are social conservatives and vice versa. Every Senator scoring above 60 in economic issues, scored above 50 in social ones. Every Senator scoring below 40 in economic issues, scored below 50 in social ones. If there is such an animal as a “financial conservative, social liberal”, it does not exist in the US Senate.

Muslim Fanatics ‘Hijack British Prison’, Daily (uk) Express

MUSLIM prisoners have launched a reign of terror inside a top security British jail.

The fanatics are forcing fellow inmates to convert to Islam or face punishment beatings.

One man who stood up to the thugs was branded with a lump of hot metal, according to a prison source.

The crisis at Whitemoor jail in Cambridgeshire has led to calls by staff for the 100 Muslim inmates there to be dispersed to other prisons round the country.

Some Al Qaeda supporters have set up a kangaroo court, sitting in judgment on prisoners and ordering punishments, the source said.

Hawaiian officials admit withholding Obama’s original BC, Israel Insider

Now it’s pretty apparent why Barack Obama made his sudden, last minute visit to Honolulu. It wasn’t Granny’s health problems that interested him but Hawaii’s Health Department.

The strategy may have backfired. A statement by Hawaiian officials Friday that they have seen but won’t release an “original” birth certificate that has never been released raises more questions than it answers.

Time for a Bank Holiday, The Nation

Here is the ugly, unofficial truth that neither Wall Street nor the government will acknowledge: the pinnacle of the US financial system is broke–with perhaps $2 trillion in rotten financial assets on the books. Nobody knows, exactly. The bankers won’t say, and regulators won’t ask, or at least don’t dare tell the public. Official silence naturally feeds the conviction that banking’s problems are far worse than we’ve been told. The Levy Economics Institute of Bard College puts it plainly: “It is probable that many and perhaps most financial institutions are insolvent today–with a black hole of negative net worth that would swallow Paulson’s entire $700 billion in one gulp.”

Citi to get bailout,
WSJ

WASHINGTON – The federal government agreed Sunday to take unprecedented steps to stabilize Citigroup Inc. by moving to guarantee close to $300 billion in troubled assets weighing on the bank’s books, according to people familiar with details of the plan.

Treasury has agreed to inject an additional $20 billion in capital into Citigroup under terms of the deal hashed out between the bank, the Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Treasury officials will charge a higher interest rate for the capital injection — 8% for the first few years — than it has charged to dozens of other banks now borrowing money under the government’s the $700 billion rescue package approved by Congress last month.

Peeling back the onion

The Dow closed below 8000 today for the first time in over 5 years. As the economy continues its downward spiral, another 5% in market cap has been peeled away. October consumer prices also fell by their largest margin margin in 60 years.

Here’s an economic stimulus idea for Congress. How about getting busy buying some long term oil contracts and begin refilling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The Democrats voted to stop filling the SPR over 6 months ago in order to put an additional 70000 bbs/day on the market. Ostensibly, this would help bring down prices. Well, oil prices are definitely down, and filling the SPR would make sense from an economic as well as national security standpoint. This is something that even a lame duck session could accomplish.

As prices for consumer products and commodities continue to fall, fears of a deflationary cycle have caused the Fed to forget about inflation. You may have also noticed a word that I’ve begun hearing more often than I can ever remember: depression as in “The Great.” I’ve wondered what a sure-enough depression would look like in 21st century America. Drake Bennett has too. His article in The Boston Globe is worth reading. Here is the link

Howard Dean, on the record

We can always count on Howard Dean for the money quote, and he seldom disappoints. Dean was in rare form today in a conference call with nutroots bloggers.

Here are a few key excerpts …

“We now have a president who is all about empowerment and bringing people together instead of a president who wants to be president of the half of the America that agrees with him.”

Agreement is an act which requires the willing participation of both parties. The Democrat position, with the rare exception of a few weeks after the 9/11 attacks, has been to oppose every initiative of the Bush Administration. Obama is not even president yet. Half the country doesn’t agree with him, and a large part of the other half doesn’t know anything about him.

You know, one of the fun parts about my campaign is that we could throw a little bomb from time to time and say outrageous things. Well you can’t do that when you’re governing and you’ve got to reach out to everybody including people sometimes you won’t want to work with.

Gee, what a guy. Reach out all you want, Howard. But, don’t be surprised when a few “little bombs or outrageous comments” come your way. As you say, that’s the fun part of being the opposition party.

This is the big test for us. Now we have a president. There’s no excuse for voting for stuff that you don’t think is in the best interest of the country anymore, for not standing up for what you believe.

This one statement is the single greatest indictment of the behavior of the democrats in Congress for the last eight years that I can think of. It is the reason that Conservatives will not give Obama the benefit of the doubt. It is the reason that the Obama Presidency is doomed to failure.

Thanks for going on the record Howard.

Three options for the Big Three

US automakers are in a tough spot, and prospects for recovery are grim.

What are their options, Bankruptcy?  Bailout?

Here is a third option that is getting some attention … the Chinese are planning to buy GM and Chrysler.

China’s  21st Century Business Herald cites a senior official of China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology– the state regulator of China’s auto industry– who dropped the hint that “the auto manufacturing giants in China, such as Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) and Dongfeng Motor Corporation, have the capability and intention to buy some assets of the two crisis-plagued American automakers.”

The enemy is Barack Obama

“…we need to remember that the enemy here is George Bush…”,
Howard Dean, Sept 25, 2003.

Over the years, democrats have not failed to cheer every bit of bad news as yet another opportunity to blame George Bush. If it was bad news for America, it was good news for the democrats.

And, now we keep hearing this “unity” BS? Even Republicans are quoted as saying they hope Obama succeeds.

Not me.

I haven’t forgotten, Howard Dean, or Nancy Pelosi, or Harry Reid, or Teddy Kenedy, or the rest of you leftist bastids.

I’m going to show Obama the same respect you and the rest of the democrats showed to George Bush. So, try this on for size …

Meet the US Army’s newest 4-star

“A Dunwoody has fought in every American war since the Revolution,” said army chief of staff Gen George Casey.

And now, a “brass ceiling” has been shattered, with the promotion of General Ann Dunwoody as the Army’s first woman to achieve the rank of 4-star General.

Defence Secretary Robert Gates said: “History will no doubt take note of [Dunwoody’s] achievement in breaking through this final ‘brass ceiling’ to pin on this fourth star.”

“But she would rather be known and remembered first and foremost as a US army soldier.” link

Congratualtions General Dunwoody.

Get healthy, or else!

cheese-puffs

I read this rather disturbing article in the Associated Press today, in which it is reported that “Manchester is hoping to fight fat with a reward system that works like a retail loyalty card. But instead of earning credit for opening their wallets, residents will be rewarded for keeping their feet on the treadmill and their fridge stocked with healthy food.”

Now, on the surface, this might seem like a good idea. Heck, I could stand to lose a few myself, and who wouldn’t want to be rewarded simply for doing the right thing? But if you look a little under the surface, this becomes troubling.

First and foremost, I have a problem with the government sticking their nose into my personal life, no matter how benevolent the motive may seem. It’s a short but steep slope from “We’ll reward you for being healthy” to “Get healthy, or else!” Right now, they’re offering the carrot, but who’s to say that once we accept this latest incarnation of Nanny government that the carrot won’t be replaced with a big and expensive stick. For example, what’s to stop the government from offering two tax tables, one for people who meet its definition of “healthy”, and those who don’t. As an overweight man who loves to smoke, I know which table I’d be paying under.

“Ah Ha!”, you say. “Smith, you big fat smoker you, you’re a drain on the health care system! Look at me: I’m a non-smoking vegetarian who runs five miles a day! You and those like you should be like me!”

To which I say: that’s the price you pay to live in a FREE COUNTRY. (Remember that phrase?) You have to put up with my bad habits and I have to put up with yours. Chances are, you are not entirely vice free yourself. And even if you are, I have news for you: unless you get hit by a bus, you too will grow old and become a drain on the health care system. It happens to almost all of us. Your wonderful “healthy lifestyle” won’t save you in the end.

Those who believe in the Nanny government and who wish to control us realize that they cannot do so without uniting people against a common enemy. For Hitler, it was the Jews. For McCarthy it was the Communists. For Nanny government advocates, it is: Bad Health. These people feel they can enact all manner of government intrusion into people’s lives, as long as it is being done in the name of Good Health. Good Health has become our new Golden Idol.

And for some of you who were nonplussed at my recent post about the 2008 election, know this: this is exactly why I have never voted Democrat. It is why I remain profoundly concerned about the Obama presidency. This sort of thing is far, far more likely to occur in the United States under a Democratic government.

Says Timothy Armstrong, coordinator of the World Health Organization’s global strategy on diet, and quoted in the same article, “I haven’t seen any evidence that it works, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try it…as public health officials we really don’t have the luxury of waiting to see what works and what doesn’t. We really do know that, in terms of curbing the obesity epidemic, all of society needs to play a role”.

It takes a village, right Timothy? And naturally, this is being funded by (who else?) the taxpayers.

Just so no one gets the wrong idea here, let me state flat out that I realize that this program is benign and well meant. And yes, I realize it’s happening in England, but our two countries are so closely linked culturally that it’s no stretch to imagine it happening here. Just look at what the Boston Public Health Commission is trying to get away with. People are getting fatter (probably because they’ve stopped smoking). But I become deeply troubled when the government starts using its leverage to try to force me to live a certain way, because I realize how quickly and easily the can change from benevolent cajoling to a direct order. I believe that, deep down, the Nancy Pelosi’s of the world don’t really want to be agreed with, they want to be obeyed. Once people allow themselves to buy into the idea that Nanny government is taking care of them, anything is possible. “Get healthy, or else!”.

Now where did I put those Cheesey Puffs?
