June 1 kicks off the Atlantic hurricane season, though the NOAA map shows no activity at this time. I’m sure Ed Mahmoud abu al Kahoul is in fine spirits. I can’t wait for the colorful maps to start showing up over at GCP.
NOAA says 9-14 storms, yada, yada, yada, and the named storms will be as follows:
Nothing really remarkable there. Of course, I’d like to see NOAA start getting a little more inclusive with their name choices. We have the hispanics covered with Joaquin and Erika. The French get a nod with Henri. I reckon that will be pronounced “Ohn Ray,” or some such shite. But, how about some more diversity for Pete’s sake?
How about a hurricane named for an American Indian? Hurricane Running Bear, or something like that. And how about an African American name, say Hurricane LaKeisha? Or an Egyptian name, Hurricane Mukhwana.
I can just picture Geraldo Rivera standing on the coastline waiting for the storm, hair blowing in the wind and spray, putting his best Egyptian pronunciation on Mukhwana, with The Flight of the Valkyries playing full blast in the background (helicopter sound effects optional).
So, Happy hurricane season folks. It will be a relief to pay some attention to the hot air coming in from the Gulf for a while, rather than Washington, D.C.

Sedgwick County 911 dispatchers are confirming that the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department has arrested a possible suspect in Dr. George Tiller’s murder. A car matching the description of the vehicle wanted in the killing was pulled over near Gardner, KS.
Kansas City television stations report the stop was made along I-35 near Gardner, south of Kansas City.
WICHITA, Kan. — Dr. George Tiller, a Kansas man who became one of the most famous figures in the national debate over abortion, was shot and killed at his church Sunday morning.Tiller was walking into Reformation Lutheran Church at 10:03 a.m., when he was shot.Tiller was pronounced dead when emergency crews arrived.Wichita television station KAKE-TV reported that police were looking for a blue Ford Taurus with a K-State vanity plate, license number 225 BAB. Police described him as a white male in his 50s or 60s, 6 feet 1 inch tall, 220 pounds, wearing a white shirt and dark pants.
Tiller was a controversial figure on the national scene for performing late term abortions. He was also a campaign contributor to former governor, and current Secretary of HHS Kathleen Sebelius.
KMBC also provides these former stories for context.
9.) She is the first Latina to be nominated to the Supreme Court.
10.) Did I mention that she is Hispanic?
*Extra Credit: “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.”
If you get an envelope in the mail containing white powder, chances are, it’s nothing to freak out about.
According to local officials, the Bayer Aspirin Company will be deploying a nationwide mass mailing ad campaign that seems a little “misguided.”
Between May 20 and May 29, the Aspirin Company will be sending out 178,000 envelopes. Of those envelopes, 33,561 will contain a sample of Bayer Aspirin Crystals, which is a white powder.
Misguided? Definitely.
Attention-getting? Certainly.
Effective promotion? We shall see.
I would mention that if you get an envelope in the mail that you’re unsure of, please call the authorities.
Eric Holder is at it again. After accusing America of cowardice in addressing race issues, Holder’s “Justice” Department dismissed a civil complaint of voter intimidation against the New Black Panthers. You probably remember this Election Day video:
The incident – which gained national attention when it was captured on videotape and distributed on YouTube – had prompted the government to sue the men, saying they violated the 1965 Voting Rights Act by scaring would-be voters with the weapon, racial slurs and military-style uniforms.
Career lawyers pursued the case for months, including obtaining an affidavit from a prominent 1960s civil rights activist who witnessed the confrontation and described it as “the most blatant form of voter intimidation” that he had seen, even during the voting rights crisis in Mississippi a half-century ago.
Holder spokesman Alejandro Miyar told the Times, we are “committed to the vigorous prosecution of those who intimidate, threaten or coerce anyone exercising his or her sacred right to vote.”
We at NG offer this clarification and modification for Spokesman Miyar and the brave political hacks in Obama’s Justice Department,
we are “committed to the vigorous prosecution of those who intimidate, threaten or coerce any one DEMOCRAT exercising his or her sacred right to vote.”
There. FTFY.

Blogger Allahpundit draws a distinction between La Raza and MEChA in an attempt to discredit Tom Trancredo’s assertion that La Raza is “the Latino KKK” … link
Members of these radical, anti-American, racist organizations are frequently smoothly polished into public respectability by the National Council of La Raza….
The National Council of La Raza and its allies in public office make no repudiation of the radical MEChA and its positions. In fact, as recently as 2003, La Raza was actively funding MEChA, according to federal tax records.
And, as we’ve noted previously, the anti-American, racist bigotry is alive and well on college campuses across the nation, whether it comes from the MexicaMovement, or MECha, or any of the allied groups given a sheen of respectability by federally supported organizations like La Raza.
“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.”
Sonia Sotomayor, during a 2001 speech at the UC Berkeley School of Law, published in the Berkeley La Raza Law Journal.
—–
Judge Sonia Sotomayor is listed as a member of the National Council of La Raza, but does that make her a racist?
24Ahead.com takes a detailed look at the La Raza (The Race).
Headed by Janet Murguia for several years, before then by Raul Yzaguirre. Former senior VP Cecilia Munoz is now part of the Obama administration. Former chairwoman is Monica Lozano (now on the Bank of America board, more here); current is Andrea Bazan (more here). …
“We have got to eliminate the gringo, and what I mean by that is if the worst comes to the worst, we have got to kill him.”
In the last election, The Democrats successfully sold the idea that Obama’s previous associations with radicals and separatists like Jeremiah Wright, and unrepentant terrorists like William Ayers was nothing at all to be concerned about. “Guilt by association,” they said. Prior to throwing him under the campaign bus, Obama himself even claimed to have never heard any of the more inflammatory words of his pastor. This was the man who baptized his children, a man he once called his spiritual mentor. And, the American public, hungry for change and tired of the steady diet of negativity in the news cycle, elected a man with no experience and a history of dubious past associations.
The Sotomayor nomination appears to be more of the same song, just a different verse.
When a judge rules based upon personal values rather than the law, then the rule of law is replaced by the rule of judicial fiat.
Just a week after Entergy Mississippi requested a 10% hike in their “Fuel Adjustment” charge (on top of last summer’s hefty increase), TVA has announced their third straight quarterly “fuel adjustment” decrease.
TVA says the decrease will bring their prices down to the lowest level in over a year.
“With the reduction in July, we will roll back all of the fuel cost adjustment increase from last fall, which is good news for ratepayers,” TVA President and CEO Tom Kilgore said. “Fortunately for all of us, the price of coal and natural gas that are used as fuels in TVA power plants has declined in recent months. In addition, current economic conditions have resulted in lower power sales for TVA and that reduces our fuel and purchased power costs, as well.” source
Now, I’m sure that their is a simple explanation for the apparent discrepancy, and I would be very interested to hear Entergy’s take on all of this. But, at first blush, Entergy’s rate hike request just doesn’t pass the smell test.
As I’ve gotten older, my appreciation for this day has grown immensely, as has my education of its history.
Originally declared ‘Decoration Day,’ there is some dispute as to when it was first observed. Some say women’s groups in the South were decorating the graves of Confederate soldiers before the end of the War Between The States, as evidenced by the following song.
Kneel Where Our Loves Are Sleeping
Words by G.W.R.
Music by Mrs. L. Nella Sweet
published 1867
Kneel where our loves are sleeping, Dear ones days gone by,
Here we bow in holy reverence, Our bosoms heave the heartfelt sigh.
They fell like brave men, true as steel, And pour’d their blood like rain,
We feel we owe them all we have, And can but weep and kneel again.
CHORUS
Kneel where our loves are sleeping, They lost but still were good and true,
Our fathers, brothers fell still fighting, We weep, ‘tis all that we can do.
VERSE 2:
Here we find our noble dead, Their spirits soar’d to him above,
Rest they now about his throne, For God is mercy, God is love.
Then let us pray that we may live, As pure and good as they have been,
That dying we may ask of him, To open the gate and let us in.
CHORUS
Kneel where our loves are sleeping, They lost but still were good and true,
Our fathers, brothers fell still fighting, We weep, ‘tis all that we can do.”
Some believe Waterloo, NY is the birthplace of this day. It was named ‘Memorial Day’ in an official proclamation by one Gen. Logan. Then Waterloo was officially declared the city where it began, by President Lyndon B. Johnson, in 1966.
As for any original thoughts on this day of remembrance, they are mostly swirling in my mind, as I find my emotions cloud my thoughts.
I alternately feel intense pride and pain for the men and women who gave so much, for so many. I can feel pride knowing so many, mostly young, people were willing to give their lives, so others could live in freedom and peace. I feel the pain for knowing those same young people died in service to this wonderful nation, and with their deaths, left so many in sorrow, as well as their hopes and dreams of a long and happy life.
Also, I knew some of the men listed in the ranks of the fallen, one in particular, and feel anger growing within my pain. I sense it in others who have lost brothers and sisters in military service, and can see it in the eyes of those who experienced it. Those who return from war have their personal burdens that they must carry, and often the weight seems crushing. While I have never felt ‘survivor’s guilt,’ I know many who have, and all I can say to them is that they are absolved. They died so we can live and be free, and never, never forget them. Remember them as they were, and honor them fully for what they have given.
For some perspective, here is the tally of those who have fallen in the service of this great nation.
At 3p.m. on Memorial Day, the official National Moment Of Remembrance occurs. Please, return the honor to those who have fallen, as they have honored us with their very lives. Memorial Day is a day for unification in this country, unlike any other.
THE FINAL INSPECTION
The soldier stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining, Just as brightly as his brass.
“Step forward now, you soldier, How shall I deal with you ? Have you always turned the other cheek ? To My Church have you been true?”
The soldier squared his shoulders and said, “No, Lord, I guess I ain’t. Because those of us who carry guns, Can’t always be a saint.
I’ve had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was tough. And sometimes I’ve been violent, Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny, That wasn’t mine to keep… Though I worked a lot of overtime, When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God, forgive me, I’ve wept unmanly tears.
I know I don’t deserve a place, Among the people here. They never wanted me around, Except to calm their fears.
If you’ve a place for me here, Lord, It needn’t be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don’t, I’ll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne, Where the saints had often trod. As the soldier waited quietly, For the judgment of his God.
“Step forward now, you soldier, You’ve borne your burdens well. Walk peacefully on Heaven’s streets, You’ve done your time in Hell.”
Neil Cavuto delivered a very pointed message to DC politicians in today’s “Common Sense.”
…It just seems in Washington, their heads are lodged in a very dark place — no need to be graphic, but time to get real.
Because what else could explain a nation’s capital that totally ignores the revolution unfolding in California’s capital? Where they’re cutting spending like crazy after voters in that state went crazy and told them to stop spending, stop taxing, stop playing the same old games.
But looking around in Washington, nothing’s stopped. Not the taxing, or the spending, or the ignoring, or the thinking, “We know better than our clueless subjects know.”
So they merrily go on thinking in their heads that they’re doing just fine. Clinging to election results from half a year ago. And insisting they’ve got a mandate — totally ignoring election results in California half a week ago and forgetting what they’ve got now is a manhole… and they’re sinking into it.
It’s one thing to be half-baked. But another to push spending that’s proven half-ass.
But you wouldn’t know that, would you, Washington? Your big head just doesn’t fathom half-ass. No wonder. It’s not that your head can’t see it. The darn thing’s just wedged too far up it.
Radio personality Erich Mancow Muller and co-host Pat Cassidy gave their audience first-hand look at the controversial interrogation technique known as waterboarding….
With Cassidy providing commentary, Fmr. Marine Sgt. Clayton South covered Mancow’s face and stated that the average duration is 14 seconds. The procedure was over in eight seconds, but the effect on Mancow was most surprising to him. He was shaking for over an hour. source
But, then, the teleprompter came on, and the president was back on message.
Using his amazing powers of hindsight, President Obama decided that the national security policy of “the last eight years” was based on fear mongering, and not on foresight.
But, I’ll leave it to others to dissect his speech.
After listening to President Bush give many national security speeches at military bases, it was unusual, and a little unsettling to listen to Preznit Obama’s version of a national security address: a highly politicized address in front of a cheerleading crowd. It sounded at times like an ACORN rally. I half-expected the drones to break into a “yes we can” chant.
I’ll also say this. If anyone was expecting Obama to begin taking responsibility for his administration, they must be disappointed. I lost count of the number of times that Obama referred to “the last eight years,” and I’ll have to wait for the transcript to get a count. But, make no mistake, Obama blamed Bush for everything but the actual 9/11 attacks, although I’m confident that many in the audience not only believed that 9/11 was an inside job, they also continue to believe that George W. Bush is the devil incarnate.
In November of 2008, the American people elected a new president. We didn’t elect a savior.
Come down off your cross, Mr. Obama. This messiah act has worn very, very thin.

May 21, 2009 in the NY Post:
Four homegrown Muslim terrorists on a mission from hell were arrested last night as they planted what they thought were high-powered plastic explosives at two Bronx synagogues, authorities said.
The men were also allegedly plotting to use a Stinger missile to shoot a military plane out of the sky in upstate New York immediately after the bombings. …
They planted what they thought were explosives in a parked car outside the house of worship.
One acted as a lookout, while the other three allegedly drove up the block to the Riverdale Jewish Center and planted two more bags of “explosives” in cars.
Unbeknownst to them, their explosives were duds — supplied by authorities who had been monitoring their plan for more than a year.
Cops swooped in and arrested them right after they allegedly planted the last of the phony bombs.
One of the suspects, James Cromitie, a k a Abdul Rahman, bragged that blowing up the synagogues would be a “piece of cake,” the feds said.
“I hate those motherf – – -ers, those f – – -ing Jewish bastards . . . I would like to get a synagogue,” Cromitie told an informant, according to a criminal complaint.
The alleged terrorists’ hatred also included the US military.
After bombing the temples, the men planned to split up and head to the New York Air National Guard Base at Stewart Airport in their hometown and shoot down a plane with a weapon they believed was a Stinger surface-to-air guided missile, sources said.
“They [the United States military] are killing Muslim brothers and sisters in Muslim countries, so if we kill them here [in the United States] with IEDs [improvised explosive devices] and Stingers, it is equal,” one of the busted men, Onta Williams, allegedly told the informant.
Also arrested was David “Daoud” Williams and Laguerre Payen, a k a Amin or Almondo.
“The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the Nation as a whole. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else.”
Obama’s plan to put everyone in high-mileage vehicles by 2016 is much like any utopian dream. The goals are noble — saving the planet, reducing fuel consumption, yada, yada, yada…
BUT, as with most fantasies, it is the unintended consequences that come back to haunt us.
In this case, it is the safety issue. This CBS report from the Insurance Institute should sound a warning to everyone.
Former President Bill Clinton met Fran Drescher at the Life Ball charity event in Vienna over the past weekend. And he was caught on camera groping the actress! It seems that he likes to keep his fingers on the pulse of the important issues.
Not something, most things, the majority of things, a lot of things, no, no, no.
Everything.
Under the banner of “This Changes Everything,” The History Channel is promoting a Global Event, complete with a countdown clock, which touts “the most important find in 44 million years!”
Oh, my!
You would think The History Channel has got to know that after headlining a program this way, it has to live up to the hype. The program simply must deliver the goods, or else the network’s credibility will be damaged, perhaps irreparably. This could turn out to the the History Channel’s very own version of Geraldo Rivera and Al Capone’s vault.
With this kind of hyperbole, anything less than the revelation of the existence of time traveling, shape shifting, crop circle designing, cattle mutilating aliens, complete with a world-wide governmental cover up, and somehow tied to the monetary crisis, 9/11, the internet bubble, the illuminati, and the free masons will be an anti-climax.
NEW YORK (Reuters) – A New York City school principal suffering from swine flu died on Sunday, becoming the city’s first death due to H1N1 flu, medical officials said.
Mitchell Wiener, 55, died after being admitted to Flushing Hospital Medical Center several days ago with the H1N1 flu virus, said Dr. Andrew Rubin, a hospital spokesman. A city Health Department spokeswoman also confirmed a death, but could not confirm the victim’s identity.
It was the first death in New York City, where many of the U.S. cases have been reported but with mostly mild symptoms.
Wiener had been in and out of consciousness and was being treated with an experimental drug, but family members had said as recently as Saturday that he was making some progress.
Mr Wiener was the Assistant Principal of Intermediate School 236 in Queens, which was closed along with several others after staff members reported sick.
Three additional schools in Queens will be closed beginning tomorrow, as health officials have documented growing flu levels.
