Turn out the lights …

… the party’s over.

Dandy Don Meredith would croon toward the end of many games on “Monday Night Football.”

Don Meredith has died. He was 72. The iconic former SMU and Dallas Cowboy star quarterback was one of the original hosts of MNF, a program which changed the way America watched the game. The national spotlight, with Meredith, Howard Cosell, and Frank Gifford, ruled the ratings for ABC in the early 70’s.

Cosell’s pomposity, Meredith’s laid back humor, and Giffords precise play-by-play was fun to watch. And the games weren’t too bad either.

  1. An East Texas boy that done good for himself.
Good ball player, great character and even better human.
    He will be missed.

  2. MNF was never the same after that crew. RIP Dandy Don.

  3. I remember MNF with him and Cosell. That was good TV folks.

  4. Nuke, forget about the Miami job, them Gators are going to be calling your coach.

    • gators can have anybody they want…

my money is on Boise’s Petersen, or … (drumroll please) Bob Stoops, returning to his roots.

      • Maybe Petersen, but I seriously doubt Stoops. As for his roots, he has spent much more time in the Big 12 at K State and OU, than at Florida. He is one of four one hundred game winners as head coach at OU, something no other school has accomplished and his legend is growing. Considering how well stocked his talent is and what he has coming in, I just don’t see him leaving.
Stoops has also said that he doesn’t plan to coach after he turns 60 like Spurrier, someone he idolizes.
Checking SB Nation, it seems Mullen is absolutely committed to MSU, and rumor has it Petrino was their #2 choice when they hired Meyer.

  5. We will have to wait and see, but leaving OU for UF would be a step down, IMO.
    Consider the OU history:

    OU – 7 national championships
    OU – 7 Big 12 Championships
    OU – 42 conference championships
    OU – 25-17 bowl record
    OU – 5 Heisman winners
    OU – 151 152(as of 10 Dec) All Americans
OU holds the NCAA record of 47 consecutive victories
OU holds the NCAA record of 48 games undefeated
OU is the only team in the country with 4 head coaches who have won 100+ games
OU has more 10 win seasons than any other team in the country
OU has more 11 win seasons than any other team in the country
OU has scored more points than any other team in the country (31,113)
OU has been ranked #1 in the AP more than any other team in the country (97 weeks, Texas has less than half at 45)
OU has been ranked in the top 5 of the AP more than any other team in the country (370 weeks, Texas only 262)
OU has been ranked in the top 10 of the AP more than any other team in the country (511 weeks, Texas only 436)
OU has been ranked #1 in the BCS more than any other team in the country
OU has been ranked in the top 5 of the BCS more than any other team in the country
OU holds the NCAA record for most points scored in a single season
OU is the only team in the country to have scored 60 points in 5 consecutive games
OU is the only school in the history of the NFL draft to have 3 of the first 4 picks in the draft.

Stoops only needs 17 victories to tie the legendary Bud Wilkinson.

  6. One coach that doesn’t seem to ever come up is Gary Patterson. TCU fans would hate to lose him, but if any HC had proven themselves over the past 8-9 years, it’s him.

  7. Hard to believe that he was that old. I remember him well.
