Mr. Trump’s Mandate

An interesting moment in last night’s CNN Townhall with GOP candidate Donald J. Trump occurred during his discussion of Obamacare, and his plans for an alternate health care strategy.  Let’s cut to the video:

The most contentious provision of Obamacare is the mandate that everyone be covered or be subject to a fine.  In fact, the legal gymnastics undergone by Chief Justice John Roberts that the mandate was actually a tax, and therefore legal, has provided Mr. Trump with the basis for his criticism of Ted Cruz as the erstwhile sponsor of Roberts during the nomination hearings.

But, here we are, in Donald’s own words saying, “I LIKE THE MANDATE.” (emphasis mine).  I asked a FB friend and true Trump believer about this, and he denied Trump said anything of the kind.  IKR.

cruz-or-loseA truly been a remarkable primary season, indeed.

The liberals have completely lost it where guns are concerned.

Pop-Tarts eaten to form the crude shape of  hand gun,  a “bubble gun” causing a student expulsion, the hand-drawing of  a  gun getting a student suspended and ordered to undergo psychological counseling, pretend gun fingers, anything at all to do with firearms is causing unreasonable fear and loathing from the left.

It’s nutty, and getting nuttier.

Anyway, I was picking up some groceries yesterday at the Piggly Wiggly, and I noticed some interesting toys in the dollar bin.  I thought I would pick some up for my grandsons before they are outlawed.  I had all of these toys as a boy and so did my sons. I hope my grandsons will enjoy them as much as I did.

And, on a another note, this is an open memo to Colt, Beretta, Magpul, and other firearms manufacturers that are being treated as  undesireables in their home states.  PLEASE consider moving your operations to southwest Mississippi.  We have an abundance of willing workers who would love an opportunity to work for your fine companies.  We’ve got great music, unbelievably good barbeque, plus, you won’t find a more gun-friendly state in these United States.  Also, the cost of living is resonable.  Land is cheap, water is plentiful, transportation is ready and available; and, the simple fact of the matter is this:

WFFOT:  Have you hugged your gunsmith today?

Now you know the rest of the story

Our friend Arch posted the following over at gcp.  Now, I have no way of knowing if any of these quips, quotes, and conversations are real or imgined.  But, since I read it on the internet …  Bon Jour!

A Washington DC airport ticket agent offers some examples of why the US is in so much trouble:

1. I had a New Hampshire Congresswoman (Carol Shea-Porter) ask for an aisle seat so that her hair wouldn’t get messed up by being near the window. (On an airplane!)

2. I got a call from a Kansas Congressman’s (Moore) staffer (Howard Bauleke), who wanted to go to Cape Town.  I started to explain the length of the flight and the passport information, and then he interrupted me with, ”I’m not trying to make you look stupid, but Cape Town is in Massachusetts.”  Without trying to make him look stupid, I calmly explained, ”Cape Cod is in Massachusetts, Cape Town is in South Africa.”   His response — click.

3. A senior Vermont Congressman (Bernie Sanders) called, furious about a Florida package we did. I asked what was wrong with the vacation in Orlando. He said he was expecting an ocean-view room. I tried to explain that’s not possible, since Orlando is in the middle of the state.  He replied, ‘Don’t lie to me! I looked on the map, and Florida is a very THIN state!!” (OMG)

4. I got a call from a lawmaker’s wife (Landra Reid) who asked, ”Is it possible to see England from Canada?” I said, ”No.”
She said, ”But they look so close on the map” (OMG, again!)

5. An aide for a cabinet member (Janet Napolitano) once called and asked if he could rent a car in Dallas. I pulled up the reservation and noticed he had only a 1-hour layover in Dallas. When I asked him why he wanted to rent a car, he said, ”I heard Dallas was a big airport, and we will need a car to drive between gates to save time.”  (Aghhhh)

6. An Illinois Congresswoman (Jan Schakowsky) called last week. She needed to know how it was possible that her flight from Detroit left at 8:30 a.m., and got to Chicago at 8:33 a.m.  I explained that Michigan was an hour ahead of Illinois, but she couldn’t understand the concept of time zones. Finally, I told her the plane went fast, and she bought that.

7. A New York lawmaker, (Jerrold Nadler) called and asked, ”Do airlines put your physical description on your bag so they know whose luggage belongs to whom?” I said, ‘No, why do you ask?’  He replied, ”Well, when I checked in with the airline, they put a tag on my luggage that said (FAT), and I’m overweight. I think that’s very rude!”  After putting him on hold for a minute, while I looked into it. (I was dying laughing). I came back and explained the city code for Fresno, Ca. is (FAT – Fresno Air Terminal), and the airline was just putting a destination tag on his luggage.

8. A Senator John Kerry aide (Lindsay Ross) called to inquire about a trip package to Hawaii. After going over all the cost info, she asked, ”Would it be cheaper to fly to California and then take the train to Hawaii ?”

9. I just got off the phone with a freshman Congressman, Bobby Bright from Ala. who asked, ”How do I know which plane to get on?” I asked him what exactly he meant, to which he replied, ”I was told my flight number is 823, but none of these planes have numbers on them.”

10. Senator Dianne Feinstein called and said, ”I need to fly to Pepsi-Cola, Florida. Do I have to get on one of those little computer planes?” I asked if she meant fly to Pensacola and fly on a commuter plane. She said, ”Yeah, whatever, smarty!”

11. Mary Landrieu, La. Senator, called and had a question about the documents she needed in order to fly to China. After a lengthy discussion about passports, I reminded her that she needed a visa. “Oh, no I don’t. I’ve been to China many times and never had to have one of those.” I double checked and sure enough, her stay required a visa. When I told her this she said, ”Look, I’ve been to China four times and every time they have accepted my American Express!”

12. A New Jersey Congressman (John Adler) called to make reservations, ”I want to go from Chicago to Rhino, New York .” I was at a loss for words. Finally, I said, ”Are you sure that’s the name of the town?” “Yes, what flights do you have?” replied the man. After some searching, I came back with, ”I’m sorry, sir, I’ve looked up every airport code in the country and can’t find a rhino anywhere.”  ”The man retorted, ”Oh, don’t be silly! Everyone knows where it is. Check your map!” So I scoured a map of the state of New York and finally offered, ”You don’t mean Buffalo, do you?” The reply? ”Whatever! I knew it was a big animal.”

WFFOT:  The Final Frontier.

Three months to live

Writing a blog post generally begins with an idea, followed by a quick run-through, getting as much down as I can without losing the original inspiration.  After that, a quick edit or three, and finishing touches of a photo, then a title.

Today, I began with the title first.  Now I’m trying to backfill with a post.

Today is Friday, September 21, 2012.

Today, there are 46 days till Election Day.

Today, according to the Mayan calendar, we’ve got three months to live.

Today, Mississippi State is making final preparations to raise their record to 4-0 against another Sunbelt Conference opponent.

Today, if the Mayans are correct, the December 20, 2012 football polls will have Mississippi State ranked #1, and scheduled to face a Big-12 opponent, probably Oklahoma, in the BCS National Championship Game.

In today’s racially charged political environment, if any political disagreement with the current occupant of the White House gets characterized by the drive-by’s as racism, what does this button (seen at the demo convention) mean?

Other than illustrating the Democrat penchant for shallow-thinking-bumper-sticker politics, does voting for someone because of their race mean the same as not voting for that person for the same reason?

All right, Vimto.  What are you up to this time?

My internal stat count is telling me that a large number of readers from the UK have made their way to our little outpost in the blogpatch, and many of them are coming here after searching the word string, “zot media inc nuke”.

So, by including the aforementioned word string, “zot media inc nuke,” I am theoretically increasing the chances for those British readers to find our blog.

But, the question remains …  What the heck are you up to, Vimto?

From Wales is the venerable vimto, secret agent in Her Majesty’s service, who doubles as a mild mannered political cartoonist. Wherever danger is lurking you can be sure – vimto is there!

The last time this happened, Vimto’s article on Christian blogs from Somalia being abandoned, had been picked up by the Big Blogs because of a supposed terror reference from a commenter who had been linked to a ricin scare in Denver.  I haven’t heard anything about that case in a long time, so I imagine this is a new case.  But, frankly I haven’t a clue.
Vimto, if you can shed any light on this for us, we would appreciate it.

msucowbellNobody gives MSU a snowball’s chance, naturally. Why should they? Alabama is ranked #2 in the land, has a ferocious defense, and a rushing game led by Mark Ingram that seems unstoppable.

The Big 4-0; Summer of ’69

The Summer of 1969.

I was 14 years old, and didn’t care much for anything except football, baseball, and basketball. Naturally, their relative importance varied with the calendar.

You would think that the Summer automatically meant baseball was numero uno. Not necessarily.

League ball was over by July 4. And, especially in the South, that meant the football season was just around the corner.

I think back to the Summer of 1969 and several events come to mind:

First, the Preacher dismissing church service early on Sunday evening so we could all go home and watch Apollo 11 land on the moon.

Second, a few weeks later, when the Preacher dismissed evening church service early AGAIN, so everyone could go home and hunker down for the hurricane that was about to roll in. At the time, nobody guessed that we would remember that particular Sunday as being the day the Category 5 storm named Camille would obliterate the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

The last thing I distinctly remember about 1969 happened in the Fall. Ole Miss – Alabama, Archie Manning, and the total excitement of watching live college football on national TV. Sitting there in my aunt’s living room with my cousins, alternately cheering, then groaning as the two teams marched up and down Legion field in a game that exemplified Dixie’s passion for college football, the game is like a flashing star across the backdrop of my boyhood memory.

Oh, BTW, it’s only 50 days till my Mississippi State Bulldogs take the field in their season opener.

Still, when I think back to the Summer of ’69, one story that seems out of place is the death of Mary Jo Kopechne. Although the images of Teddy in a neck brace are strong in my recollection, for some reason or another, I’ve never associated that event with 1969. Maybe it’s because it got buried in the news cycle of Apollo 11. I dunno. Strange.

WFFOT: Third Anniversary Edition

(forwarded from Brenda)

Lawyers should never ask a Mississippi grandma a question if they aren’t
prepared for the answer.

In a trial, a Southern small-town prosecuting attorney called his first
witness, a grand motherly, elderly woman to the stand. He approached her and
asked, “Mrs. Jones, do you know me?”

She responded, “Why, yes, I do know you, Mr. Williams. I’ve known you since
you were a young boy, and frankly, you’ve been a big disappointment to me.
You lie, you cheat on your wife, and you manipulate people and talk about
them behind their backs. You think you’re a big shot when you haven’t the
brains to realize you never will amount to anything more than a two-bit
paper pusher. Yes, I know you.”

The lawyer was stunned! Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the
room and asked, “Mrs. Jones, do you know the defense attorney?”

She again replied, “Why, yes, I do. I’ve known Mr. Bradley since he was a
youngster, too. He’s lazy, bigoted, and he has a drinking problem. He can’t
build a normal relationship with anyone and his law practice is one of the
worst in the entire state. Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three
different women. One of them was your wife. Yes, I know him.”

The defense attorney almost died.

The judge asked both counselors to approach the bench and, in a very quiet
voice, said, “If either of you idiots asks her if she knows me, I’ll send
you to the electric chair.”

Human Trafficking and Slavery in DC Beltway

Under the radar alert:

The Washington Examiner’s Freeman Klopott is reporting that dozens of wealthy Beltway families have employed illegal immigrants as domestic employees in what Federal prosecutors have said amounts to slave labor.

Sentencing was scheduled to be held for naturalized citizen and Indonesian native Soripada Lubis for harboring up to 24 Indonesian women, and profiting from their labor.  Lubis’ wife, Siti Chadidjah Siregar, an Indonesian citizen, has also entered a guilty plea to making false statements, and faces up to 5 years in prison.

This is interesting:

Klopott says, “The list of Lubis’ 50 clients divulged in court filings by federal prosecutors includes a high-profile Washington attorney, ….   No charges have been filed against the people who employed the women, and The Examiner has chosen not to release their names.

Begging the question, of course, “Why not release the names?”

Since this case involves under the table, cash payments to illegal immigrants, then it is safe to assume that taxes have not been paid.

There’s a lot of that going around lately.

Zero Tolerance – WFFOT

I’ve got a message, for the eight Republicans who crossed the line to vote for the cap’n trade bill.

I’m sick and tired of this nonsense.

Life is good.  You’ve heard me say that many times.  But the fact is, until we demand that it stays good, and not put off till tomorrow to when you might be less busy, or more outraged, then every idiocy that has  ever percolated to the top of the liberal wish list will become law:  enabled by poltroonish wads of goo like the 8 wads of goo named above.

No more concessions!

It’s time for Zero Freaking Tolerance.  No more allowance for the nutjobs.  No more concessions to the free lunch crowd.  No more agreement with the idiotic utopian premise of the psychotic Left.

NO to  industry destroying, job-exporting tax increases disguised as feel-good “save the planet,” man-made global warming mumbo-jumbo legislation that is rushed to the floor of the House, unread, undiscussed, unbelievable in its size and scope, and as unworkable  as a Rube Goldgerg mousetrap.

NO to the nationalization of the health-care profession.

NO to a free-spending, unaccountable Congress.

Argue every single piece of legislation, and every single appointment all the way. Demand the details of every bill put forward by the nutjobs, and if they won’t provide them, then walk out!  Call a press conference.  Name names.  Use the internet.  Make Youtube your ally.

And, when you do finally get some details, then comb them for every single crumb of waste.

If your elected representatives don’t vote for common sense then turn up the heat.  Make their professional lives a professional dolor. Call them, email them, make a video and post it on the internet.  Slap every single example of incompetence with an equal measure of common sense every single time.

Zero Freaking tolerance.  That’s what I’m talking about.

Think, people, think.   This Republic isn’t the way it is by accident.  We allowed it to happen.

It’s time to make common sense cool again.

Update:  From H/A, Energy Czar hasn’t read the bill either

Did Michelle have Walpin fired?

Judson Berger reports:

A top Republican senator is asking whether First Lady Michelle Obama’s office played any role in last week’s firing of former service program Inspector General Gerald Walpin.

The concern, one of several surrounding Walpin’s sudden dismissal, stems from the timing of a staff switch in the first lady’s office. Just days before Walpin got the boot, the White House announced Michelle Obama’s chief of staff would be appointed senior adviser to the agency Walpin was responsible for monitoring. Michelle Obama said at the time she and her outgoing staffer, Jackie Norris, would work closely going forward.

michelle-fires--walpinNaturally, the White House denies any wrong-doing. And, the fact that the target of IG Walpin’s investigation, Sacramento mayor and former NBA star Kevin Johnson, is big buds with the First Lady is simply a coincidence.

No. Not just a coincidence. It was … it was … an act of political courage! Yeah that’s what it was. Firing IG Walpin to keep him from exposing government corruption was an act of political courage.

No doubt about it.

Would a wise Latina pick Sotomayor for the Supreme Court?

Apparently not, according to Scott Ott:

(2009-06-05) — Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor said today that “if President Obama were a wise Latina woman, with the richness of her experiences, he would have picked a less controversial court nominee.”

Judge Sotomayor said she doesn’t blame the president for his unwise choice, “after all, as a black male, he can’t be expected to demonstrate much more wisdom than he has so far. He’s certainly sharper than a white male, but the fact remains that he’s male, and has no discernible Latino heritage.” [snip]

President Obama said he would not comment further on the controversy, “since matching wits with a Latina woman is above my pay grade.”

No Democrat Left Behind

Eric Holder is at it again. After accusing America of cowardice in addressing race issues, Holder’s “Justice” Department dismissed a civil complaint of voter intimidation against the New Black Panthers. You probably remember this Election Day video:

In an exclusive story, The Washington Times reports:

The incident – which gained national attention when it was captured on videotape and distributed on YouTube – had prompted the government to sue the men, saying they violated the 1965 Voting Rights Act by scaring would-be voters with the weapon, racial slurs and military-style uniforms.

Career lawyers pursued the case for months, including obtaining an affidavit from a prominent 1960s civil rights activist who witnessed the confrontation and described it as “the most blatant form of voter intimidation” that he had seen, even during the voting rights crisis in Mississippi a half-century ago.

Holder spokesman Alejandro Miyar told the Times, we are “committed to the vigorous prosecution of those who intimidate, threaten or coerce anyone exercising his or her sacred right to vote.”

We at NG offer this clarification and modification for Spokesman Miyar and the brave political hacks in Obama’s Justice Department,

we are “committed to the vigorous prosecution of those who intimidate, threaten or coerce any one DEMOCRAT exercising his or her sacred right to vote.”

There. FTFY.

Cavuto: Congress has its head in a dark place

Neil Cavuto delivered a very pointed message to DC politicians in today’s “Common Sense.”

…It just seems in Washington, their heads are lodged in a very dark place — no need to be graphic, but time to get real.

Because what else could explain a nation’s capital that totally ignores the revolution unfolding in California’s capital? Where they’re cutting spending like crazy after voters in that state went crazy and told them to stop spending, stop taxing, stop playing the same old games.

But looking around in Washington, nothing’s stopped. Not the taxing, or the spending, or the ignoring, or the thinking, “We know better than our clueless subjects know.”

So they merrily go on thinking in their heads that they’re doing just fine. Clinging to election results from half a year ago. And insisting they’ve got a mandate — totally ignoring election results in California half a week ago and forgetting what they’ve got now is a manhole… and they’re sinking into it.

It’s one thing to be half-baked. But another to push spending that’s proven half-ass.

But you wouldn’t know that, would you, Washington? Your big head just doesn’t fathom half-ass. No wonder. It’s not that your head can’t see it. The darn thing’s just wedged too far up it.

Obama declines Iran offer of alQaeda members

In a move reminiscent of Bill Clinton’s refusal to negotiate a deal for the extradition of Osama bin Laden in 1996, the Obama Administrtation has just recently declined to accept an offer from Iran of several alQaeda members, including some on the FBI’s “Most Wanted Terrorists” list.

Kenneth Timmerman reports at Newsmax.com

“Hillary Clinton is very much against these negotiations,” another source familiar with the U.S.-Iran talks told Newsmax.

“In Tehran, they don’t understand this,” said a third source who recently returned from Iran after discussing the Iranian and American proposals. “When the ruling factions actually agree on a policy, they put the whole government apparatus behind it.”

Tehran now believes that the al-Qaida operatives it is sheltering in Iran have become a liability. Some, such as al-Qaida military chief Saif al-Adel and Ahmed Mughassil, who has been indicted for the 1996 bombing of a U.S. military barracks in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, figure on the FBI’s Most Wanted List of terrorists and have American blood on their hands.

Timmerman says that the State Department is still getting up to speed, so in a sense, the offer may have been premature. But the fact that Obama has plunged ahead with a policy which includes closing Guantanamo and releasing detainees, possibly even into the US, ignores the reality that the war on terror continues, regardless of what the new Administration calls it.

“If you’re talking about individuals against whom there are no criminal charges, then it gets complicated,” former CIA Director R. James Woolsey told Newsmax. “If you close down Gitmo, where are you going to keep them?”

Woolsey said he could see no reason why the Obama administration wouldn’t take terrorists who are facing U.S. criminal charges. “To me, it would be extremely unwise not to take them out of circulation.”

Unwise is one way to describe it.

Reckless is another.

The judgement to lead

As Taleban fighters continue their surge toward the Pakistani capital of Islamabad, the prospects of Islamic terrorists coming into the possession of nuclear weapons has never been closer. The gap, in fact, is a mere 60 miles.

The “test” that Joe Biden warned about may be upon us.

“Mark my words…… With the next, first six months of this administration, if we win, they’re going to — we’re going to face a major international challenge. Because they’re going to want to test him, just like they did young John Kennedy. They’re going to want to test him.”

Instead of placating the radical Left by picking a fight with the previous administration over the definition of “torture,” our new president might be forced to employ his considerable skill on the security task at hand.  And, if he is unsuccessful in “mending fences with our enemies,”  he may have to consider acting in the security interests of the Free World by securing the nuclear stockpile.

A year ago, candidate Obama told us that he was very capable of doing this. … “Foreign policy is the area where I am probably most confident that I know more and understand the world better than Senator Clinton or Senator McCain.”

No big surprise if you don’t remember this. It was understandably obscured by the other comments he made at that same San Francisco fundraiser — his famous “clinging to guns and religion” statement. (I mean, really, who can doubt that DHS’s report on right-wing extremism is any different than Obama’s own true feelings about conservatives?)  Obama went on to say that among the three candidates for President, he alone possesses “the judgment, the temperament to ask the right questions, to weigh the costs and benefits of military action, who insists on good intelligence, who is not going to be swayed by the short-term politics.”  source

What a piece of work, this man.  Perhaps he remembers making these statements.  Let us hope that his recollection is better than the statements he made regarding Cuba as recently as 2004, something that he described last week as happening “eons ago.”

Although Mr. Obama has been quick to blame many of the problems of the nation on his predecessor, one thing he inherited that is in good condition is our military.  Their bravery and mettle may have to bear the brunt of Obama’s “test.”

They, as well as he, are in my prayers.
