The economic turmoil witnessed over the past few weeks is a reminder that fundamentals play an important role in determining price trends in our various trading markets. A debt crisis is a basic fundamental, and due to the interdependence of our global markets, it can send shockwaves felt around the globe. Currencies weaken and strengthen. Commodity and futures markets react since the price for farming exports will be impacted down the road come harvest time. Balances between exports and imports become disrupted. Inventories may have to be revalued. Management teams must suddenly review their near term plans and adjust where necessary.

The European debt crisis and the uncertainty surrounding the Euro and its future were quick to cause the expected flight of capital to safe havens. In this case the U.S. Dollar and the Japanese Yen were the primary beneficiaries in the forex market. The flight into precious metals, Gold and Silver, was more pronounced. Traders, that had graduated from forex demo accounts and had dabbled in the “carry trade” business, raced to their respective trade desks to unwind unprofitable positions.

A “carry trade” is a strategy in which an investor sells a certain currency with a relatively low interest rate and uses the funds to purchase a higher yielding security, a bond or stock, in a different currency.  A trader using this strategy attempts to capture the difference between the rates, which can often be substantial, depending on the amount of leverage used. If the destination currency weakens, then the trader is exposed to a loss unless he has hedged his bets.

Many hedge funds and traders have used the Dollar and Yen as the “base” currency and invested where rates were higher, typically in Australia and New Zealand this time around. The Australian economy has been one of the strongest of the G20 countries.

The unwinding of carry trade volume could signal a further downturn in the Aussie Dollar. If it breaks through 0.85, then deeper cuts can be expected.

The Australian economy has outperformed many around the globe. GDP was up 2.7% in 2009, unemployment is half of what other countries are experiencing, machinery and equipment spending is also up, and China’s demand for resource exports remains unabated. The Central Bank has raised interest rates, and it appears that Australia may have skirted the global recession that has gripped Europe and America.

If the Australian economy is performing at near trend, then what are businessmen to make of all of this global turmoil? Fear and uncertainty, not market fundamentals, drove the Aussie Dollar to an eight-month low of 0.8517 on Wednesday. The consumer sentiment index showed a seven per cent slide for May, its biggest percentage drop since the height of the credit crunch in October 2008. Global turmoil and uncertainty suggest caution as the best strategy, or as the old adage goes, when in doubt, hold onto your position.

Police release photo of arson suspect

Victorian police have released a composite photo of a man wanted for questioning over the Australian brush fires that killed at least 181 people and which authorities suspect may have been started by arsonists.

australian-arson-suspectPolice gave warning that the death toll from the fires that ravaged Victoria state last weekend could exceed 200 as fire fighters continue to battle 30 blazes across the state.

The man in the composite photo, who police say is in his early 20s and has a dark complexion, is believed to have information about a suspicious fire at Ivanhoe East, in Melbourne’s north-east.

He was apparently seen in the area wearing black trousers, a polo shirt and yellow sunglasses and carrying a black rucksack.

Arson investigators are looking into several of the bush fires that destroyed more than 1,000 homes. The fire that wiped out the town of Marysville and claimed up to 100 lives has been classed as suspicious.

Forest Jihad: Life is like a box of molotovs

Here’s an interesting article to ponder with your morning coffee …

Josh Gordon September 7, 2008
AUSTRALIA has been singled out as a target for “forest jihad” by a group of Islamic extremists urging Muslims to deliberately light bushfires as a weapon of terror.

US intelligence channels earlier this year identified a website calling on Muslims in Australia, the US, Europe and Russia to “start forest fires”, claiming “scholars have justified chopping down and burning the infidels’ forests when they do the same to our lands”.

The website, posted by a group called the Al-Ikhlas Islamic Network, argues in Arabic that lighting fires is an effective form of terrorism justified in Islamic law under the “eye for an eye” doctrine.

The posting — which instructs jihadis to remember “forest jihad” in summer months — says fires cause economic damage and pollution, tie up security agencies and can take months to extinguish so that “this terror will haunt them for an extended period of time”.

“Imagine if, after all the losses caused by such an event, a jihadist organisation were to claim responsibility for the forest fires,” the website says. “You can hardly begin to imagine the level of fear that would take hold of people in the United States, in Europe, in Russia and in Australia.”

With the nation heading into another hot, dry summer, Australian intelligence agencies are treating the possibility that bushfires could be used as a weapon of terrorism as a serious concern.

Fear might be an initial reaction. But it would quickly be followed by outrage and retribution. I would not be surprised to see vigilante justice if a PC-paralyzed government failed to take appropriate actions. Aurora commented on the Victoria wildfire thread …

The lowlifes who lit those fires may find themselves in a bit of trouble of their own once they get rounded up. Causing whole families to be fried alive is not exactly smiled upon around here!

NSW, Victoria fires claim dozens

Updatedeath toll expected to rise to 230

Residents of the southeastern Australian states of New South Wales and Victoria continue to battle major fires, as dozens have died, and homes and businesses have been lost.  RSOE Alertmap reports 35 deaths so far.  Kinglake and Marysville township in Victoria have reported major damage.  More from ABC News

Authorities are unable to get into Kinglake to confirm the level of destruction but yesterday ABC Local Radio listener Peter Mitchell said the entire town was on fire.

“The whole of Kinglake is ablaze,” he said. “I live a couple of kilometres out of town and when I heard explosions I went to the end of my road to see what was going on and by the time I got there I saw fires everywhere.”

‘Ceased to exist’

marysvilleaustraliaJane Cowan visited Marysville this morning and says the township has “virtually ceased to exist”.

“We were in the main street and it’s like a warzone, like a bomb has been dropped on the entire township,” she said.

“People there are in an absolute state of shock. Most people had already left, but the people, I’d say about 30 people that are still left and had spent the night sheltering on the Football Oval there, are just completely dazed.

“[They are] walking around the streets with rugs around their shoulders because it’s actually getting cold here now if you can believe it.

New developments in the UK bombing plot

Authorities in Bangalore, India have released new information on the two brothers arrested in last week’s failed terror attacks in London and Glasgow:

Indian police said on Sunday they had seized CDs containing “radical materials” from the homes of two suspects held in connection with the failed British car bombings.”They were found in the houses of Kafeel Ahmed and his brother, Sabeel, and we believe these CDs contain material on Islamic military movements in various nations,” said a top police officer in the southern city of Bangalore.

“These are radical stuff,” he told AFP as sources added the data contained on at least two seized CDs related to the conflicts in Chechnya and Iraq.

The two brothers are among three Indians arrested in Britain for the failed car bombings in London and Glasgow.

They hail from the middle-class district of Jayanagar in Bangalore, India’s software capital.

‘Having none of it’

When Iranian Revolutionary Guards captured the British sailors and Royal Marines in March, it was not exactly their first attempt. It turns out that Iranian forces made an earlier concerted attempt to seize a boarding party from the Royal Australian Navy.

The Australians, though, to quote one military source, “were having none of it”.

The BBC has been told the Australians re-boarded the vessel they had just searched, aimed their machine guns at the approaching Iranians and warned them to back off, using what was said to be “highly colourful language”.

The Iranians withdrew, and the Australians were reportedly lifted off the ship by one of their own helicopters.

Ya gotta love the Aussies.

Indonesia: Caught a BIG fish

Indonesian police have captured the country’s most wanted terrorist Abu Dujana, the head a military wing of the Jemaah Islamiah terrorist network.

Dujana was among at least three arrested in the weekend raids across central Java, police confirmed on Monday.

A member of the Indonesian police’s Detachment 88 anti-terror team, which was involved in the raid, said Dujana was caught in one of a series of raids on the weekend.

Dujana was being interrogated in a secret location, the source said on condition of anonymity. Asked if Dujana was in custody, the source said, “Yes, correct.” {snip}

Jemaah Islamiah (JI) has been blamed for several deadly attacks in Indonesia, including the 2002 Bali bombing that killed more than 200 people, including 88 Australians.

Dujana is wanted in connection with a series of deadly bombings, including the 2004 attack on Australia’s Embassy in Jakarta.

Just another book

Aussie blogger Pommygranate was present at the Sydney Recital Hall for close of the writer’s festival which featured Ayan Hirsi Ali.   Here is an excerpt:

ayaan.jpg“She talked of how she demanded the beheading of Salman Rushdie as a schoolgirl following the publication of the Satanic Verses, of how she learned to despise Israel without knowing a thing about it.

And then she spoke of September 11th, 2001.”

“On a bright Tuesday morning in New York and Washington, planes full of people flew into buildings full of people. I prayed this was not the work of Muslims. I picked up the Holy Book and there I found Osama bin Laden’s words of justification. Did the attacks stem from true belief in true Islam? I had to make the leap to believing the Holy Book was relative – not absolute, not the literal syllables pronounced by God, but a historical record, written by men 150 years after the Prophet Muhammad’s death. In other words, it was just another book.”

“She dismissed those critics who claim she is anti-Islamic with the words I started this article with. But she also added that she is not a Muslim because…”

“I have lost the fear of the Holy Book. I have lost the terror of being burned alive after I die. I am not a Muslim because I lost respect for the book and its author and his messenger. I lost respect for them because of their bloodthirsty demands to kill and hate. I now feel the common humanity with those I once shunned: the Jews, Christians, atheists, gays, sinners of all stripes and colours. I lost respect not for Muslims but for what they fear.”

Pommy has an excellent post.  I encourage you to read it all.

Australian honor rape

His lawyer says, “My client is not a zealot.” He is characterized as a ‘hard-working businessman with close ties to the community.’ One can only wonder what punishment Abdul Reda Al Shawany would have dealt out to a Muslim woman had she actually converted to Christianity rather than having simply read the Holy Bible.

…the woman – who wears the Muslim hijab – had received threats from members of her faith for reading the Bible but had not converted to Christianity. It is alleged she met Al Shawany, who she had first met overseas, at Warwick Farm railway station in September 2002 after he told her he had some mail for her from overseas.

Al Shawany allegedly then took her to a Warwick Farm unit and pushed her in the head as she entered.

“She was wearing a hijab. The accused grabbed the hijab, the veil, and pulled it tight across her mouth,” Mr O’Brien told the court.

“She fell to the floor and she couldn’t scream because she had a hijab tight across her mouth.” Al Shawany allegedly raped the woman and later allegedly said: “Let your Jesus help you.” source

Although he denies any wrong-doing, there is a positive DNA match taken from the victim’s clothing.

The trial continues today in Campbelltown (Australia) District Court.

Let’s play 80’s Trivia…….

What group was responsible for the Western world’s first bioterrorism attack?

Need a hint? OK, “Antelope, Oregon

Give up yet? Heh™……………

In the summer of 1984, members of a religious cult known as the Rajneeshees, followers of the Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, attempted to gain political control of Wasco County, Oregon by attacking the city of The Dalles in what is considered to be the only known biological attack in the United States during the 20th century. By September of 1984 the town’s water supply and at least ten other locations in The Dalles would fall victim to the attacks and more than 700 people would become ill, most from eating at restaurant salad bars contaminated with Salmonella typhimurium. source

Well, these very same sex-obsessed, gun-toting, utopian “Orange People” terrorists are back at it. Although, reportedly some of them relocated to Charlotte NC, [editors note: Orange County, NC…..ya think this might be one of the neighbors that Lizzie Edwards is terrified of? Of course, it’s just a coincidence.] other leaders of the Antelope cult settled in and around Byron Bay, Australia. Greg Roberts in The Australian has an interesting report that these “Orange People”, or “Sanyassins”, as they are sometimes called, have been recruiting people to “work and live in [an island] paradise.”

Byron Bay Sanyassin Deborah Stone [formerly of antelope, OR] has recruited staff for the Anunda Healing Resort, but when contacted by The Australian, said the plan had been scrapped. “It was a beautiful idea but it won’t happen,” she said.

But two people accepted to work on the island said they had recently been told the project was proceeding.

Ms Stone denied the project was organised by her sect. “I am just the middle person,” she said. She declined to identify its backers or the island’s location.

Ms Stone, a director of the Osho Mevlana Foundation, runs Osho’s House Healing Centre in Byron Bay under her Sanyassin name, Santoshi.

Applicants for resort jobs were told they would live on an ocean liner before being transferred to the island.

Gingrich the father of Anna Nicole’s Baby? — Fox News Alert

Update #4: “I told you so!”

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) – Larry Birkhead is the father of Anna Nicole Smith’s baby, according to DNA tests, and the late reality TV star’s former boyfriend emerged from a court hearing Tuesday to proclaim that his daughter would soon be home.

Update #3: “The nude photospread at the link on the first Update will prove without a doubt the fact that I am speaking truth to power.” Blogger Nuke Gingrich’s latest comments come amid charges that his “denial” of being Anna Nicole’s Baby-daddy is in fact a cynical attempt to drive up traffic at his award-winning website. “That’s just ridiculous. There is no evidence to support those charges. I cannot imagine anyone using poor Anna Nicole like that. This photospread is proof positive that I am not the father of Danielynn. Do you see me in any of those photos? I rest my case”

Update #2: “Just give me what I want, and I’ll go away.” Right Wing Blogger Nuke Gingrich has reportedly changed his mind….”I want the house in the Bahamas.”

Update: Planck’s constant has a flicker photospread of anna nicole (sans clothing) in his sidebar. [Welcome WordPress Blog of the day — thank you readers. ]

Conservative blogger Nuke Gingrich came forward today and announced that he is not the father of Anna Nicole’s baby, Danielynn Hope.

“There is absolutely no truth to the rumor”, Nuke said, “And I have no idea how the rumor started. As a matter of fact, I didn’t even know it was a rumor.”

Pro-democracy priest sentenced to eight years

While the “progressive” pundits lament the sentence of Australian jihadi David Hicks, aka Abu Muslim al-Austrailia, the following story from the utopian worker’s paradise of Viet Nam further underscores the inability of the Left to discern good from evil.

Our friend John E. Carey sends this story of Father Nguyen Van Ly, sentenced to 8 years in prison for his “democracy conspiracy.” Hanoi equates this with “terrorism.” Here is how he is allowed to speak on his own behalf. The “trial” lasted three hours. This will NOT be in the “news”.

He told the court: “For the Vietnamese nation, I will continue to fight for the values of freedom and democracy.”

Thanh, asked if he had a final message, said, “What I did exactly followed international treaties and law.”

Media rights watchdog Reporters Without Borders had urged the court not to jail the dissidents, calling it “a very important test for the credibility of the Vietnamese judicial system.”

“Vietnam’s constitution protects free expression, but the Communist Party does not tolerate criticism. We call on the judges to adhere to the law and acquit the defendants.”

Income tax violates sharia law

So says a group of “hardline” muslim clerics in Australia. As a matter of fact, they have used this reasoning to persuade others to refuse to pay their income tax. John Howard’s government isn’t taking too kindly to this breach of the Australian code.

“We call on the moderate community to haul these people into line, to make sure the majority view prevails … that people should meet their taxation and legal obligations,” he said.

The Australian yesterday revealed that fundamentalist Muslim imams were encouraging their followers to avoid paying tax because they considered paying income tax contrary to Islamic sharia law.

Mr Dutton yesterday wrote to the tax commissioner asking him to investigate matter.

Opposition assistant Treasury spokesman Chris Bowen yesterday said Labor also condemned any form of tax evasion.

“While it is an extremist minority in the community that holds this view on income tax, this needs to be exposed and any claims of tax evasion must be investigated,” he said.

“A fair income tax system is based on the premise that everyone must pay their fair share.”

Call for Halt to Muslim Immigration

THE leader of the Christian Democratic Party, Reverend Fred Nile, has called for an immediate moratorium on Islamic immigration to Australia.

Rev Nile, who is the longest serving member of the NSW Legislative Council, was speaking to supporters at a gathering in the Sydney suburb of North Ryde yesterday.

He said there has been no serious study of the potential effects on Australia of more than 300,000 Muslims who are already here, and Australians deserve a breathing space so the situation can be carefully assessed before Islamic immigration can be allowed to resume.

In the meantime, Australia should extend a welcoming hand to the many thousands of persecuted Christians who are presently displaced or at risk in the Middle East. “I pray that within a decade, Muslims in Australia will clearly have demonstrated their commitment to Aussie values including democratic pluralism and the rights of women. We can then assess whether Muslim immigration should begin again,” he said.

Obama to Howard: Chickenhawk!

Welcome WordPress Blog of the day Top 50. Thank you readers. UPDATE—Round II —
… far from backing down from the developing spat, Mr Howard has said today that Senator Obama’s response missed the point of his criticism

“I think the most interesting thing about (Senator Obama’s comments) is that it didn’t really address the substance of the issue,” Mr Howard has said on ABC Radio.

He has said Australia is making a “very significant and appropriate contribution” given its population.

See alsoHotAir, A vote for Obama is a vote for Osama

Barack Hussein Obama (BHO) fired back at Autralian PM John Howard today, invoking the familiar “nutroots” chickenhawk meme at a campaign stop in Ames, Iowa.

Responding to Howard’s criticism of Obama’s Iraq surrender-by-May plan, Obama lashed out at Howard by minimizing the Australian troop commitment of 1400, and said that if Howard “is so ginned-up” about the Coalition effort, he should commit an additional 20,000 Australian troops. (I have been reminded that “strategic redeploment” does not mean “surrender”, but failing to see the difference, I have decided to continue to use my original characterization.)

Perhaps Obama thinks Howard is an easy target. Given Obama’s lack of experience on the world stage, I don’t doubt this one bit. I’ve blogged previously about the absence of gravitas in the Obama campaign, and this comment is simply more evidence that he truly doesn’t get it, and is in no way ready for prime time. Hillary’s attack machine must be licking their chops. Obama is making it easy for them. But, I suspect we haven’t heard the last word yet from PM Howard.

Stolen rocket launchers ‘hidden in Vic’

This hasn’t exactly been a slow news weekend.  Here’s some more developing news from our allies down under…

Federal police fear five stolen rocket launchers may have been hidden in Melbourne by a terrorist group.

An Australian Federal Police spokesman told Fairfax newspapers it was “common sense” to assume agents were in Victoria searching for the rocket launchers because the terrorist group had cells in Melbourne and Sydney’s south-west.

Taha Abdul Rahman was arrested at a house in Leumeah, in Sydney’s south-west, on Friday and charged with 17 offences over seven rocket launchers allegedly stolen from the Australian Defence Force.

Police say Abdul Rahman, 28, supplied five of the Light Anti-Armour Weapons to one of the men arrested in anti-terrorism raids in Sydney last November over a plot to blow up the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Lucas Heights nuclear reactor.

Kramer received a lot of attention last week for flinging the N-bomb at some rowdy hecklers. YouTube had the video, and it was all over the net. Now, Kramer is going to take the Trent Lott mea culpa tour, starting with an appearance with Jesse Jackson, who has his own pastracist remarks to try and live down.

Daylight Savings Millennium

As Americans “fall back” in their biannual hourly Daylight Savings time adjustment, muslim women in Australia are hoping for a much longer and more permanent adjustment in the misogynous attitudes as characterized by a Ramadan sermon delivered at the Lakemba mosque near Bankstown, Australia.

The Australian last week revealed that in a sermon last month, Sheik Taj al-Din al-Hilaly blamed the rape victim for being raped, and likened immodestly dressed women to “meat” that attracted voracious predators.

“I am not fresh meat; he should not compare girls to meat,” said one young Muslim woman. “It was totally unacceptable and I am embarrassed by him,” said another. Yet another described him as “ignorant, unprofessional, unacceptable”.

Another speaker said:

“No matter what colour or creed, it is just not right. I think the majority of Muslim women would feel this way, it would be unimaginable for them to support him. Being a woman, how could you support that view?”

She said that as an educator she taught children they needed to be responsible for their actions. “This is what a leader should be saying to his male followers, that they should be responsible for their actions.”

muslim-protest.jpgSaying that these attitudes do not represent true islam is either a true statement, or it is not. It is, however, not the responsibility of the Western world to learn the meaning of true islam through CAIR-sponsored sensitivity training, or by listening to the pious pronouncements of talking-head taquiya saying that islam is a Religion of Peace™.

Honor killing, intimidation, intifada, riot, murder, mayhem, and the constant seething against a perceived insult or slight, speaks with a volume and intensity that words simply cannot excuse. It is time for the islamic world to “Spring Forward” a millennium, and clean up its act, or face marginalization, if not outright separation, from civilized society.

Australia is a muslim nation?

In what must have come as a great surprise to most Australians, the muslim advisor to Prime Minister John Howard has made the claim that Australia is a muslim nation.

“When I go abroad, they ask me where do I come from? I say I come from a Muslim country,” he said.
“Which country, they say. Australia.
“That’s not a Muslim country. Yes it’s Muslim country.
“For the value that my religion preaches, these people practise….” said Amir Ali.

In a statement that was applauded by Andrew Robb, the Parliamentary Secretary for multi-cultural affairs, Ali added this choice bit of moral relativism, “Values are universal. Human values – there is no such thing as Australian values.”

Obviously, Mr. Robb forgot to ask Ali how these universal human values can be in harmony with the koranic demands for supremacy:

Fight those who believe not in Allah or the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which has been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the Religion of Truth, from among the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission and are subdued. ” —Qur’an, 9:29

Let me save Ali, Robb and their ilk the trouble of wondering if this line of “reasoning” will work in the States, especially in my native South — Not no, but Hell, no Mofo.
