The judgement to lead

As Taleban fighters continue their surge toward the Pakistani capital of Islamabad, the prospects of Islamic terrorists coming into the possession of nuclear weapons has never been closer. The gap, in fact, is a mere 60 miles.

The “test” that Joe Biden warned about may be upon us.

“Mark my words…… With the next, first six months of this administration, if we win, they’re going to — we’re going to face a major international challenge. Because they’re going to want to test him, just like they did young John Kennedy. They’re going to want to test him.”

Instead of placating the radical Left by picking a fight with the previous administration over the definition of “torture,” our new president might be forced to employ his considerable skill on the security task at hand.  And, if he is unsuccessful in “mending fences with our enemies,”  he may have to consider acting in the security interests of the Free World by securing the nuclear stockpile.

A year ago, candidate Obama told us that he was very capable of doing this. … “Foreign policy is the area where I am probably most confident that I know more and understand the world better than Senator Clinton or Senator McCain.”

No big surprise if you don’t remember this. It was understandably obscured by the other comments he made at that same San Francisco fundraiser — his famous “clinging to guns and religion” statement. (I mean, really, who can doubt that DHS’s report on right-wing extremism is any different than Obama’s own true feelings about conservatives?)  Obama went on to say that among the three candidates for President, he alone possesses “the judgment, the temperament to ask the right questions, to weigh the costs and benefits of military action, who insists on good intelligence, who is not going to be swayed by the short-term politics.”  source

What a piece of work, this man.  Perhaps he remembers making these statements.  Let us hope that his recollection is better than the statements he made regarding Cuba as recently as 2004, something that he described last week as happening “eons ago.”

Although Mr. Obama has been quick to blame many of the problems of the nation on his predecessor, one thing he inherited that is in good condition is our military.  Their bravery and mettle may have to bear the brunt of Obama’s “test.”

They, as well as he, are in my prayers.

Veep debate wrap-up

I think I’m going to leave it to the rest of the punditeria and the blogosphere to point out the various slip-ups of the VP candidates. Actually, Karl Rove on Fox News gave a running list of misstatements by both candidates that was pretty inclusive. I think both candidates did what they set out to do, but I give the debate to Governor Palin.

It didn’t start out that way, however. In fact, during the first few minutes, I looked over at Mrs. Nuke and told her that Sarah wasn’t up to the task. But, as the debate went on, she got stronger, and performed at a level that I think will rekindle the hopes of Republicans that have suffered a bit over the past two weeks.

A key point of the evening for Governor Palin came when she defined “tolerance.”

In defending traditional marriage, Sarah was unapologetically supportive of the traditional definition of marriage as between one man and one woman. But, she took it one step farther. Rather than allowing herself to be painted as a homophobe (a great sport for liberals BTW), she expressed a “live and let live” philosophy without embracing the liberal posture of moral equivalence. It was a fine distinction, and one that a lot of social conservatives will appreciate.

It was a confident and inspiring performance.

Obama buzzed in Florida

Joe Biden’s most recent gaffe was brought up on the campaign trail by Sarah Palin at a Cedar Rapids rally….

“our opponents, they have some strange ideas about raising taxes. To them, raising taxes – and Joe Biden said it again today — raising taxes is about patriotism.” That line brought a chorus of boos.

“To the rest of America, that’s not patriotism, raising taxes. It is about killing jobs and hurting small business and making things worse,” she continued. “This isn’t about anyone’s patriotism, it’s about Barack Obama’s poor judgment.”

“He wants to raise taxes by hundreds of billions of dollars. And at a time like this, that will make today’s bad economy seem like the good old days.” source

And, just in case the Anointed One didn’t get the message, a protester at a Jacksonville rally brought it to his attention in a unique way…..
from FoxNews (Bonney Kapp)

Protesters are as common to the campaign trail as supporters – from those waving McCain signs at the entrance of events, to the more subtle passersby who flash the thumbs down gesture (or worse) along the motorcade route, to the occasional group that infiltrates and interrupts an event.

But this afternoon, someone went all out to get his or her message out at Obama’s rally in northern Florida.

A single engine plane pulling a banner behind it – like those you’d see at the shore – circled Obama’s rally, which was held at Metropolitan Park along the St. John’s River in Jacksonville.

The protester’s message: “Raising taxes is not patriotic.”

Biden: the next to go under the bus

Already the Democrat long knives are out, clearing the path for the exit of Joe Biden from the Democratic Party ticket.

CBS News and The Politico have picked up on the story by investigative reporters Chuck Neubauer and Tom Hamburger in the LA Times.

a potential conflict of interest involving Biden and one of the nation’s biggest asbestos litigation law firms — which also happens to be his top contributor.

The report seems to provide fuel to Obama supporters enraged Illinois senator picked a running mate with such deep ties to the D.C. cash-politics-lobbying world.

The Associated Press has the story of Biden, and his questionable relationship with MBNA, the largest employer in Delaware. Coincidentally, employees of MBNA make up the largest source of campaign contributions for Biden.

A son of Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden was paid an undisclosed amount of money as a consultant by MBNA, the largest employer in Delaware, during the years the senator supported legislation that was promoted by the credit card industry and opposed by consumer groups.

And, oh, by the way:

In a separate matter in which Hunter Biden’s lobbying activities were referenced, he and Biden’s brother Jim have been sued for allegedly defrauding an ex-business partner.

As Obama’s under-the-bus crowd continues to grow, it is clear that the preparations for an emergency Bidenectomy have been made. The only thing standing between this happening is Sarah Palin’s Wednesday night acceptance speech at the RNC. If she does poorly, then Biden stays. But, if she performs well, and wows not only the partisans in St. Paul but also the independents watching on their television screens, then the worst fears of the Liberals will have been realized.

Obama will have no other choice but to dump Biden and choose the only VP candidate that will give him a winning shot.

Hillary Clinton.

She’s Baaaack. Just remember folks, you read it here first.

Update 2: Estrich estimates 30% of HRC voters will bolt for McPal

My favorite Bidenism-“My state was a slave state”

With the VP speculation settling on Joe Biden, I thought I would reach into the archives and pull out one of my all-time favorite Bidenisms.

Joe Biden on the US Constitution

Joe Biden, plagiarist, Senator, and would-be Democrat nominee for President, weighed in on the Iranian nuclear program (which, everyone knows, is designed for “peaceful purposes” ) in New Hampshire, yesterday …….

During an address to the Seacoast Media Group in New Hampshire on Thursday, the Delaware Senator said Bush has ‘no authority’ to unilaterally launch an attack against Iran.

“If he does, as [Senate’s] Foreign Relations Committee chairman and former chairman of judiciary, I will move to impeach him,” he added.

When asked why not impeach the President now, Senator Biden said while the calls for Bush’s immediate impeachment were valid, they might not have enough constitutional support. Source

That constitutional support is pretty important. Especially since the House, not the Senate, is the Constitutionally authorized body to originate impeachment proceedings.

Here is a link to The United States Constitution. Read it, Senator Biden. It couldn’t hurt.   (h/t Taranto)
