Black Swan Sighting: Massive fire at JPM Gold Warehouse

JPM Eligible Gold 7.19_0UPDATE:

Story Debunked at Zero Hedge> >>>

So far, 20 fire trucks and at least 4 ambulances plus NYPD have responded to a massive fire in the J. P. Morgan gold warehouse.   Located 10 stories below One Chase Manhattan Plaza on Wall Street, the repository currently holds an all-time low of 46,000 ounces.  With over one half million ounces reportedly standing against JP Morgan for the June contract, the dwindling supplies may signal something more ominous.

2008 saw the demise and bankruptcy of Lehman.

Merrill Lynch, AIG, Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, HBOS, Royal Bank of Scotland, and others all came within a whisker of doing so and had to be rescued.

Considering that  the OTC market and futures and options are an estimated 92xgreater than the underlying physical market, this cannot, and will not, end well for holders of paper Gold, or the banking system overall.

Outage continues at Free Republic

Problems at popular news site “Free Republic” have continued into a second day.

“They changed their IP address last month from to,” said conservative blogging legend Nuke Gingrich. I haven’t heard if they are having any technical issues. They finished their quarterly fundraiser a few days ago, so money’s not the problem. It’s too early to rule out cyber mischief from either the Chinese, or the Obama people. Neither one of them care too much for the bitter clingers over at FR,” Gingrich said.

We will continue to monitor the situation, and will provide updates as we learn more.

TSA at Work: Michael Yon Arrested For Not Disclosing Income

From Hot Air.

Thank goodness our Homeland Security people are on the job after the EunuchBomber botched attack on Christmas Day.  We certainly don’t want to have independent war correspondents passing through our airports without revealing their annual income:

Got arrested at the Seattle airport for refusing to say how much money I make. (The uniformed ones say I was not “arrested”, but they definitely handcuffed me.) Their videos and audios should show that I was polite, but simply refused questions that had nothing to do with national security. Port authority police eventually came — they were professionals — and rescued me from the border bullies.

When they handcuffed me, I said that no country has ever treated me so badly. Not China. Not Vietnam. Not Afghanistan. Definitely not Singapore or India or Nepal or Germany, not Brunei, not Indonesia, or Malaysia, or Kuwait or Qatar or United Arab Emirates. No county has treated me with the disrespect can that can be expected from our border bullies.

Four Washington police officers ambushed

“A scene out of a horror movie….”

LAKEWOOD, Wash. – Four police officers were shot and killed in a bloody Sunday morning ambush at a Lakewood-area coffee shop, officials said.

Pierce County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Ed Troyer called the ambush “a targeted attack” on the four Lakewood police officers as they were preparing to start their shifts at about 8:30 a.m.

Officials at the scene said one or two gunmen burst into the Forza Coffee Co. outlet at 11401 Steele St. South, shot the four uniformed officers as they were working on their laptop computers, then fled the scene.

Bush commutes Compean and Ramos

Breaking. President Bush commutes sentences for Border Agents Compean and Ramos!

ramoscompeanadThis is very good news for Americans who have argued that Compean and Ramos should have never been convicted in the first place. It is also wonderful news for the families.

Fox News is reporting that that the men are scheduled for release on March 20.

Mr. Bush could have given the agents a full pardon, but chose instead to commute the sentences. AP reports that according to a “senior admnistration official”…

Mr. Bush “believed they were excessive and that they had already suffered the loss of their jobs, freedom and reputations.

The action by the president, who believes the border agents received fair trials and that the verdicts were just, does not diminish the seriousness of their crimes, the official said.

Media Bias:Admission By Deletion!

Found this story over at NewsBusters. I really should check them more often, as this story had completely passed me by, though, it could be because I never pay any attention to CNN.

In any event, it seems CNN had placed Super Sarah Palin on their list of Criminals of 2008. As NB stated in their original post, included in the above link:

Palin, however, has done nothing remotely like what these other political ner-do-wells have done. She did not take bribes, she did not indulge in sexual dalliances with co-workers or call girls, she did not get booted from her party or lose her job as Governor. She is not under indictment nor does she face jail time, yet CNN includes her in a list with Rob Blagojevich, John Edwards, Kwame Kilpatrick, Larry Langford, Tim Maloney, Elliot Spitzer and Ted Stevens.

Said whaaaaa?

However, due to an overwhelming response, and a proper bloglashing, CNN, abruptly and surreptitiously, removed Super Sarah from their slide show.

Consider this a victory for the power of the new media, and also a direct admission of either a blatant display of liberal media bias, or a terrible mistake.
I chose the former.

“All-Out War” in Georgia

South Ossetia, in the central European nation of Goergia is the scene of bitter fighting between the Russian Federation and national defense forces from Georgia. Witnesses said the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali was devastated, with reports of hundreds of civillian deaths.

Russia sent columns of tanks and reportedly bombed Georgian air bases yesterday after Georgia launched a major military offensive to retake the breakaway province of South Ossetia, threatening to ignite a broader conflict…

“I saw bodies lying on the streets, around ruined buildings, in cars,” said Lyudmila Ostayeva, 50, who had fled with her family to Dzhava, a village near the border with Russia. link

Georgia told the UN security council today that Russia mounted a “premeditated” attack on its territory that inflicted many civilian casualties.

Irakli Alasania, Georgian ambassador to the UN, addressed the public during an emergency meeting to discuss the fighting.

“Russia launched a blunt and open invasion of Georgia and has challenged the international community and its established democracy,” said Alasania, whose remarks were supported by the United States.

“The United States is profoundly disturbed by this development and we call on Russia to cease all attacks and respect Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” US Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad said.

Daily pill halts Alzheimer’s in its tracks

“This is an unprecedented result in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease,” said Prof Claude Wilschik, leader of a British research team. The results of the Phase 2 trials carried out by a team from the University of Aberdeen (UK) suggests that the new medication known as “rember” stops Alzheimer’s by as much as 81%. The findings are being hailed as the biggest breakthrough in the batle against Alzeimer’s in over a century.

Patients with the brain disorder had no significant decline in their mental function over a 19-month period.

‘We appear to be bringing the worst affected parts of the brain functionally back to life,’ said Dr Claude Wischik, who led the research.

It is the first time medication has been developed to target the ‘tangles’ in the brain that destroy nerve cells, leading to deteriorating memory.

The drug helps to disrupt this process, preventing the formation of new tangles and loosening those already created.

Last night the findings were hailed as the biggest breakthrough in the battle against Alzheimer’s since 1907.

Eventually the drug could be used to stop the disease in its early stages before symptoms have even appeared, it is hoped.

Robin Long, Your Obligations Have Come Due!

A U.S. Army deserter who fled to Canada three years ago has been deported back to America to face possible court martial or a return trip to Iraq.

The Canadian Press.

And so he has, to much wailing and gnashing of teeth from the loons who have supported the many deserters that have fled to Canada.

I visited many of the websites and blogs that are devoted to encouraging and supporting people like Long, who make a commitment to their nation, then violate that agreement and flee to a country that will shelter them. I will not link to any of those sites, as they are the most pathetic group of destroyers of society you could possibly imagine. Duty, Honor, Country are meaningless words to them, as they only support their desire to promote anarchy and Marxism by undermining a nations ability or desire to provide a strong national defence. Perhaps there are some well intentioned people that associate with these groups, but they certainly are misguided and the leaders of these groups know exactly what they are doing, and why.
So do I.

So, to jab those anarchists and Marxist with a pointy stick, I say, Welcome Home, Robin. Your day in court will be forthcoming and perhaps not too soon. In the meantime, you will have many opportunities to learn a skill before entering the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks-Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, such as cleaning latrines, mopping with perfect figure eights and of course, being a master of the electric floor buffer.

I should also include a definition of desertion in this post:

U.S. military law: desertion is not measured by time away from the unit, but rather:
1) by leaving or remaining absent from their unit, organization, or place of duty, where there has been a determined intent to not return;
2) if that intent is determined to be to avoid hazardous duty or shirk important responsibility.
3c)Any person found guilty of desertion or attempt to desert shall be punished, if the offense is committed in time of war, by death or such other punishment as a court-martial may direct, but if the desertion or attempt to desert occurs at any other time, by such punishment, other than death, as a court-martial may direct.

The UCMJ is found in Title 10, Subtitle A, Part II, Chapter 47 of the United States Code. In Subchapter X, “Punitive Articles,” section 885, article 85, is found the remedy for desertion.

Some look at contracts in daily life as something that can be broken or ignored at will, with some legal wrangling to make things whole again. Signing a contract with the U.S. Army is not such a contract and is accompanied with a solemn oath. That this punk, Long, would volunteer for service, sign a contract and take the oath to defend the Constitution of the United States, then decide he didn’t want to take the chance of having his lovely locks harmed, or his sorry butt injured or killed, just walked away and fled the country. He deserves no better than what the Courts Martial decides. I doubt he will get the death penalty, that would do too much harm to the good will of Canada’s PM for sending him back. There are quite a few other deserters in Canada that need to be returned home for prosecution, to take such a punitive action and I would like to see them all returned and rewarded with the full weight of the UCMJ, and many years of military corrections followed with a dishonorable discharge, which is equivalent to a felony conviction and the loss of certain rights and privileges, such as the right to vote.
Once again, Welcome Home, Robin, you worthless sack of excrement, your obligations to this country, your word and your sacred oath have come due.

BTW, did you know there is an actual Memorial To Deserters in Ulm, Germany? I found it in my research and it honors the German deserters of WWII, of which 15,000 were executed.
The central idea behind the memorial? “Desertion is not reprehensible, war is”.
My! How profound and wrong-headed.
How many deserters were there? I don’t know, but with that high a number of executions, it must have been huge and of course we all know how badly WWII ended for Germany.

This further illustrates my contempt for those who do desert and especially for their enablers.

PPT has a busy weekend

Not much time was spent on the golf course this weekend for members of the Plunge Protection Team. Today’s announcement of a support plan for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac follows another grim week on Wall Street. Hank Paulson and Ben Bernanke faced the impending meltdown of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac with the only real tools at their disposal: expanded borrowing authority from the Fed, and, pending Congressional approval, direct government ownership of equity shares in the mortgage giants.

“Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac play a central role in our housing finance system and must continue to do so in their current form as shareholder-owner companies,” Paulson said Sunday. “Their support for the housing market is particuarly important as we work through the current housing correction.”

Last week’s market volatility culminated with a large-scale bank failure, numerous 52-week lows on the Dow, and the CEO’s of America’s largest financials wondering when and if the bloodletting would end.

Just one blogger’s guess, but I expect a strong market rally next week as news of the support plan for Fannie and Freddie gives a much needed shot of confidence to beleaguered investors. Hopefully, Congress will take a very close look at this and demand that government’s ownership positions will be both limited and temporary. I can dream, can’t I?

from WSJ

The federal government’s seizure of IndyMac Bank is deepening worries among executives, regulators and consumers about the U.S. banking industry, which is in a tightening bind following a long run of prosperity.

Banks and thrifts are struggling against a rising tide of bad loans, and it is becoming increasingly clear that some lenders won’t be able to dig their way out. While fewer banks are expected to fail than the 834 that went under from 1990 to 1992, it will likely take several years for battered financial institutions to work through their bad loans and replenish their depleted capital.

It may take longer than that. The BOGNONBR graph has been updated since our last look, and the trend shows no indication of changing direction. Quite the contrary: a 15% decrease in non-borrowed reserves from the previous month.

Update 2:

a grim assessment from UK Telegraph, predicts “de facto nationalisation of the banking systems in the US, Britain and Europe.”

I might have to reconsider my “Monday Rally” prediction.

RIP, Tony Snow

from CNN…

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Former White House press secretary Tony Snow — who once told reporters “I’m a very lucky guy” — died at the age of 53 early Saturday after a second battle with cancer.

Tony Snow responds to reporters at an October 2006 White House news conference.

Snow, who had been undergoing chemotherapy treatments for a recurrence of the disease, left his White House job September 14, 2007, and joined CNN in April as a conservative commentator.

President Bush said Saturday that he and first lady Laura Bush were “deeply saddened” by Snow’s death.

“The Snow family has lost a beloved husband and father. And America has lost a devoted public servant and a man of character,” the president said in a statement.

Tony was fun to watch. His high-pitched voice took some getting used to, but he carried himself so well on camera that you didn’t notice his voice after a while.

Whether speaking for the White House, or as the original host of Fox News Sunday, Tony was always well-prepared, asking intelligent questions, and unafraid to confront the agenda-style journalists of the pack media mentality.

Tony was a breath of fresh air, and he will be missed.

Texas Mourns! ARSON!!

The Texas Governor’s Mansion was set ablaze by some miscreant early this morning.
For me, and other Texans, this act of depravity is simply incomprehensible, and I sincerely hope that as soon as the law of man punishes him/her, that the Good Lord will impose his own punishment.
The Governor’s Mansion first opened in 1856, a decade after Texas was annexed by the U.S. government, and has been in continuous use since that time, longer than any other state west of the Mississippi. It has a glorious past, has been home to numerous people of fame, and even more guests.
As a young college student in Austin, I couldn’t count the number of times I walked by, and drove by, the mansion. It was like an old friend, a link to our past and our future, and you could not walk or drive by without looking.
According to reports, this being one, the damage is nearly catastrophic, with the roof buckling, and they won’t know for certain how extensive or serious the damage is, until the arson investigation is concluded, and structural engineers can examine it.
Please pray for our beloved Governor’s Mansion, as it is a dear, dear friend to Texans.

R.I.P Charlton Heston! You Will Be Missed!

The following quote is a statement from the family of Charlton Heston.

“To his loving friends, colleagues and fans, we appreciate your heartfelt prayers and support. Charlton Heston was seen by the world as larger than life. He was known for his chiseled jaw, broad shoulders and resonating voice, and, of course, for the roles he played. Indeed, he committed himself to every role with passion, and pursued every cause with unmatched enthusiasm and integrity.

We knew him as an adoring husband, a kind and devoted father, and a gentle grandfather, with an infectious sense of humor. He served these far greater roles with tremendous faith, courage and dignity. He loved deeply, and he was deeply loved.

No one could ask for a fuller life than his. No man could have given more to his family, to his profession, and to his country. In his own words, “I have lived such a wonderful life! I’ve lived enough for two people.”

Also, there is this article from the LATimes, with a look at his accomplishments.
For my part, he was one of my favorite actors. His parts and performances, in some of the most epic movies ever made, were powerful, sensitive, thought provoking, and entertaining. I can remember wanting to stand up and cheer when he vanquished his opponent in the chariot race from Ben Hur, and I could feel his spirituality in his performance as Moses. His efforts in promoting civil rights, whether fighting for actors in Hollywood as the President of the actors union, marching with Martin Luther King, or as President of the National Rifle Association, he always gave of himself for worthy causes. Mr. Heston, by his behavior and conduct, was a man, and I feel sorrow for his passing, for his loving family, and for the loss of such a strong role model for our society.
God Speed Mr. Heston, thank you for all you have done. Your rest is well earned.

Harper wins MS 3rd

Conservative blogging legend Nuke Gingrich officially calls it for Gregg Harper over Charlie Ross in the MS 3rd District.

“It was an old-fashioned whoopin’,” said Gingrich, relaxing with a Macanudo and a mint juelp, on the veranda from NG Election Central in southwest Mississippi. “Ross didn’t know what hit him. This is a blowout, and I, for one, couldn’t be happier for the people of the Third District.”

Gingrich endorsed Harper over the weekend, and momentum has been moving in Harper’s direction ever since. Some are calling Gingrich’s expose’ of the Club for Growth, and their attempt to influence Mississippi’s primaries a “watershed moment.” Gingrich, characteristically modest, said of the CfG — Ross connection, “Pat Toomey and his ilk are history. CfG’s march towards irrelevance continues unabated. These guys are just plain bad news. A bunch of rich Yankees who think they can come in here with their dollars and buy themselves a Congressman. Well, the people spoke loudly. Heh™”

Gregg Harper will face a Democrat opponent in the general election, but in the MS 3rd, who really cares? He won the real battle tonight, and that’s all that matters.

(from WLBT, with 80% 92% of the precincts reporting, it’s Harper 57-43 over Ross.)

Knife, Handcuffs Found Among Kids Suspected In Plot To Hurt Teacher

WAYCROSS, Ga. — Three of the nine Ware County third-grade students accused of being involved in a plot to harm their teacher will face some serious charges, according police. Waycross Police Chief Tony Tanner on Tuesday released pictures of the evidence, which includes a steak knife, a paperweight, handcuffs, gloves and several rolls of tape.According to Tanner, the motive for the plot might have been to get revenge on a teacher after she disciplined a girl in her classroom for standing on a chair. The police chief said District Attorney Rick Currie has decided to charge a 9-year-old girl with two counts of aggravated assault, possession of weapons on school grounds or school safety zone and conspiracy to commit a crime of aggravated assault.

Also to be charged are a 10-year-old girl, who will face a charge of conspiracy to commit a crime of aggravated assault and possession of weapons on school grounds or school safety zone, and an 8-year-old boy accused of conspiracy to commit a crime of aggravated assault.

Those three students, whose names have not been released, were the ones who brought all the weapons, according to police.

Authorities got word of the alleged plot to harm teacher Ms. Belle Carter at Center Elementary School on Friday when another student reported seeing the knife in the possession of another child.

The 8-, 9- and 10-year-olds have been accused of being involved in a plan to harm Carter, but some parents said the plot was much worse. Channel 4 received several e-mails from parents who claimed the students wanted to kill their teacher.

The headline in Monday’s Waycross Journal-Herald read murder.

“I have not heard that word used. The principal says they were planning to harm their teacher,” said Theresa Martin, of Ware County Schools.

“We really can’t say they intended to kill her. We knew they had talked about I believe that they might hit her in the head or they may even stab her,” Tanner said.

Investigators confirmed the students brought a steak knife, a roll of duct tape, handcuffs, ribbon and a heavy crystal paperweight to school. They said all nine of the children who have been suspended had a different roll they were supposed to play in the planned attack.

Licensed mental health counselor Audrey Dearborn called the allegations against the third-graders alarming.

“Before you would see these types of behavior in high school. Now, we’ve skipped the middle school and gone right to the third grade,” Dearborn said.

Dearborn said a lot of kids view school as an environment where they have to fight to succeed and be treated fairly, but Dearborn said kids need to be taught that the word fight should not be taken literally.

“They have distorted views about how to handle problems in their society,” Dearborn said. “They respond the way the cartoon characters do- – they fight with aggression. This is a cry for help. They are saying, ‘I am angry. I am hurt and I am striking out. We need to help them.” Investigators said it was not clear whether the students understood the of what they were planning.

“Do kids know enough about anatomy or injuries to where they could even realize that if they were to have stabbed her or hit her on the head or anything else, how much harm that they would have done? That’s our biggest question,” Tanner said.

He said the parents of the children accused are, “Shocked, saddened, and surprised. This is their worst nightmare.”

Also surprised by the students’ alleged plot was the teacher, who Martin said called her students good kids.

“She showed me a picture of the students in her class. I think she was really surprised they would do this. She see them as good kids and asked me to look at them and see if thought would do anything like this,” Martin said.

Source:  News4Jax

Who would think that 3rd graders–8 and 9 year old children–would conceive of a plan to do bodily harm, even kill, their teacher, and then gather the materials to carry it out?

Waycross is a town I’ve been through many times.  Nice people.  Nice place to live.  Good place to raise children.  So naturally, everybody is in complete shock about this.

Happy Birthday Melissa!

Happy birthday Melissa.

R.I.P., Jeff Healey!

The music world is waking up this morning, to the tragic loss of one it’s greats Sunday night.

Guitar wizard Norman Jeff Healey of Toronto died Sunday of cancer. He was 41.
Healey was considered a prodigy and earned numerous Juno and Grammy nominations in the course of his career.
He lost both his eyes to retinoblastoma before he was eight-months-old, but never let that slow him down.

Early last year, Healey underwent surgery to remove cancerous tissue from his legs, and later from both lungs; aggressive radiation treatments and chemotherapy failed to halt the spread of the disease.
Healey – who was adopted as an infant and didn’t have any information about his birth parents – said in an interview with the Citizen in July 2005 that he didn’t know if he inherited the illness or developed it due to external factors.
“I do not regret the situation I am in at all,” he said.
While his daughter, Rachel, didn’t inherit the form of retinoblastoma Healey had, his son wasn’t so lucky. Amniotic fluid showed that the now three-year-old Derek carried the mutation.
It also wasn’t until 2005 that Healey learned that he and his son were at risk for secondary cancers.
“I used to believe that once they had removed my eyes, that was the end of the story,” Healey said. “I understand now that having this (mutation) in my blood, this won’t be my last encounter with cancer.”

Healey is survived by his children, Rachel and Derek, as well as his wife, Cristie, father and stepmother, Bud and Rose Healey, and sisters Laura and Linda. Funeral arrangements are still being made.

His website said Sunday that he died with his wife, Cristie, at his bedside in Toronto’s St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Jeff Healey, died far too soon, and he will be missed.
A tribute video, “I See The Light” for this occasion seems fitting in more than one way, as this album title earned him a Grammy nomination in 1988.

Breaking News! A HuckaBoom Endorsement!

Paul Weyrich has endorsed Mike Huckabee.
Weyrichs profile:

“We are different from previous generations of conservatives. We are no longer working to preserve the status quo. We are radicals, working to overturn the present power structure of this country.”

Mike Huckabee’s comment:

“He has been one of my political heroes and mentors, and I’ve admired his tenacity as a conservative stalwart,” he said.

Say what you will about endorsement’s, but among conservatives, this is a biggie.
