King of Swat

“STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP)—
Jarvis Varnado broke the NCAA’s career record for blocks and had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Mississippi State to a 20-win season with a 74-66 victory over Alabama on Wednesday night.

Varnado was two shy of his third triple-double with eight blocks for the Bulldogs (20-8, 8-5), who took a one-game lead in the Southeastern Conference’s Western Division with three games left. They also sent the Crimson Tide (14-13, 4-9) to its sixth straight road loss.

Dee Bost had 22 points, including consecutive 3-pointers late, to help Mississippi State win its fourth game in five contests.

Varnado broke Wojciech Mydra’s record of 535 career blocks, which the Louisiana-Monroe center set from 1998-2002. He now has 142 this season and 536 in his career.

With the crowd on its feet chanting Varnado’s nickname, “Swat,” much of the way, he had six second-half blocks and used his intimidating presence to help the Bulldogs pull away.

The 6-foot-9 center from Brownsville, Tenn., had blocks on consecutive Alabama possessions midway through the second half to turn the momentum. The second, on JaMychal Green, was pulled in by Ravern Johnson, who drove the length of the court and dunked to push the lead to 47-39 with 12:18 left.”

SEC Champs! Dogs take Vols 64-61

After four victories in four days, Mississippi State earned their way to the NCAA field of 65 with a hard-fought 64-61 victory over eastern division champs Tennessee in Tampa, Florida.

kodi-augustusState started quickly, jumping out to a 9-2 lead, as Jarvis Varnado had two quick inside baskets before Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl decided to put big body Brian Williams in the game to provide a physical presence. It was only the first of several coaching moves by Pearl and MSU coach Rick Stansbury in a defensive chess match that saw numerous ties and lead changes.

A turnover by Barry Stewart, and a three pointer at the buzzer by UT’s Tyler Smith tied the game at 36 at the end of the first half.

The second half devolved into a tight defensive struggle, marked by runouts and jump shots, as neither team was able to solve the opposing defense. A three-point bucket by Phil Turner with 1:40 left gave the Dogs the lead for good, as the game ended on a series of bizarre inbounds plays and turnovers by both squads.  Two more free throws by Turner with 8 seconds left provided the final margin, as a final  3-point shot by Tennessee missed as time expired.

This is the second year in a row that the SEC Tournament has been won by a lower seed playing 4 games in 4 days, as last year’s champion, Georgia, mad an improbable run in the tornado-wracked tournament in Atlanta.

Phil Turner led 4 Bulldogs in double figures with 12 points, the final two coming at the line with 8 seconds left. Barry Stewart and Ravern Johnson each had 12, and big Jarvis Varnado added 10, to go along with 7 boards, 6 blocks, and numerous altered shots. Tennessee was led by Wayne Chism with 15 points, JP Prince with 14, and Tyler Smith with 12. Neither team shot the ball particularly well, but that had as much to do with the tight defense played by both clubs.

With the victory, State earns their second consecutive trip to the NCAA’s.

Bullies smash Gamecocks 82-68

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Barry Stewart scored 21 points, most of them from 3-point range, and Mississippi State beat South Carolina 82-68 Friday in the quarterfinals of the Southeastern Conference tournament.

Dee Bost added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs (21-12), who won their fourth straight and might have eliminated the Gamecocks from consideration for the NCAA tournament.

South Carolina (21-9) has lost three of four down the stretch, a skid that could offset the team’s strong RPI (No. 49) during the NCAA’s selection process.

The Gamecocks felt like they let this one get away. They had a double-digit lead early and a four-point advantage at halftime.

But they were outplayed in the second half. Stewart did a big chunk of the damage, hitting consecutive 3s that put Mississippi State ahead for good.

Zam Fredrick led the Gamecocks with 20 points.

State is playing their best basketball of the year.  Coach Stansbury said the same in the post-game interview after yesterday’s 19-point victory over Georgia.

Today’s key performance was turned in by Barry Stewart, whose clutch 3-pointers tied the game at 55, and then put the Dogs ahead for keeps with just over 7 minutes to play.  Late season X-factor Kodi Augustus, who reminds me of Donte Jones on the ’96 Final Four Squad, had another solid performance, as the State bench provided the difference in these two otherwise evenly matched teams.

Tomorrow’s semi-final is against LSU, a 67-58 winner over Kentucky in today’s early game.  Here’s hoping the third time’s the charm for State.

MSU Bulldogs feast on Duck Soup

rhodes.jpg

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP)Charles Rhodes (photo) kept Mississippi State in the game. When his teammates finally started helping, the Bulldogs rallied past Oregon.

And it didn’t hurt that the Ducks suddenly lost their shooting touch.

Rhodes scored a career-high 34 points and the eighth-seeded Bulldogs came back from a 13-point second-half deficit for a 76-69 victory over ninth-seeded Oregon on Friday night.

Mississippi State trailed 41-28 after Malik Hairston’s 3-pointer at the start of the second half, but Oregon didn’t make another 3 until the final seconds, finishing 9-for-38 and 2-of-21 after halftime.

Rhodes scored six straight points to start the Bulldogs’ rally – part of an 8-0 run that cut the lead to five. Mississippi State then fell behind by nine before Barry Stewart made a 3-pointer with just over 13 minutes remaining – the Bulldogs’ first of the game after 12 straight misses.

Until that shot, only four players had scored for Mississippi State. Stewart went on to make three more 3-pointers and finished with 16 points.

Stewart’s third 3 pulled the Bulldogs within one at 52-51. Rhodes then put Mississippi State (23-10) ahead with a dunk.

The Bulldogs finally took control with Stewart’s final 3-pointer, which gave them a 66-60 lead. He was so open in front of the Mississippi State bench that coach Rick Stansbury discretely pointed to him, and Jamont Gordon eventually threw him the ball.

The Bulldogs are making their fifth NCAA tournament appearance under Stansbury. He’s now taken them to the second round four times, but never further than that.

Malik Hairston scored 22 points for Oregon, but when the Ducks (18-14) stopped making outside shots, their offense went into disarray. That was the case for most of the second half.
