Tuesday Ten

1) The Obama State Department says it has revoked the diplomatic visas for four Honduran officials working in its interim government.

The announcement comes as the United States has been pressing for Honduras to allow the return of exiled President Manuel Zelaya. source

2) The Obama administration has turned off an electronic sign at the U.S. diplomatic mission in Havana that displayed pro-democracy and human rights messages to Cuban passers-by.

The news ‘zipper’ on the fifth floor of the American Interest Section in the Cuban capital had riled the government for the past three years.

But it is now shut down amid the administration’s efforts to engage with Cuba’s leadership that has already seen some U.S. sanctions eased. Source

4) Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) was the only Republican to support Sotomayor. The Senate cmte’s Dems voted unanimously for the Bronx native. Can you say “primary?” source

5) McCain Flip-flops on Missile Defense … The former Republican nominee for President, current U.S. Senator from Arizona, and minority Ranking Member on the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee John McCain has chosen in his current position not to challenge Obama and this administration on their reduction of funding and deployment of missile defense, as he previously promised. source

6) House lawmakers voted 264-153 to approve the annual health and education spending bill that cut funding for Community-Based Abstinence Education. Also according to the Obama recommendations, Congress in late June chose not to renew the smaller abstinence-education funding initiative known as Title V.

Instead, the Departments of Health and Human Services, Education and Labor money will be directed to a new $114 million initiative to promote contraceptives and explicit sex education. Source

8 ) George Voinivich blames GOP woes on Southerners. Gee. I thought the GOP’s problems could be traced straight to candy-assed Republicans like Voinivich. Source

9) Obama applies The Chicago Way to the non-partisan CBO, and voila! The analysis by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said a government-run health insurance plan proposed by Democrats would not drive private insurers out of business, and most people would still choose to get their medical coverage through their employers. Source

10) It’s a Religion of Peace™ (part 470,914) “We are getting a glimpse of what happens when Muslims who refuse to accept American values and principles gain political power in an American community,” said Richard Thompson, president and chief counsel of Thomas More Law Center… . Source

Sotomayor: same song, second verse (updated)

“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.”

Sonia Sotomayor, during a 2001 speech at the UC Berkeley School of Law, published in the Berkeley La Raza Law Journal.

—–

Judge Sonia Sotomayor is listed as a member of the National Council of La Raza, but does that make her a racist?

24Ahead.com takes a detailed look at the La Raza (The Race).

Here is an excerpt:

Far-left racial power organization that’s considered mainstream but which funds extremists (also here) and supports illegal immigration as a way of obtaining political power. Funded by, among others, the Ford Foundation, the U.S. government (also see this, this, and this), and major corporations such as HomeDepot and General Motors. Has been pandered to by many top politicians, including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, John McCain, and Karl Rove (see this). Per the Washington Post, they and a few other groups had “virtual veto power” over the provisions of the 2007 comprehensive immigration reform (i.e., amnesty) bill.

Headed by Janet Murguia for several years, before then by Raul Yzaguirre. Former senior VP Cecilia Munoz is now part of the Obama administration. Former chairwoman is Monica Lozano (now on the Bank of America board, more here); current is Andrea Bazan (more here). …

In 1994, they gave their “Chicano Hero Award” to the person who’d made this statement years earlier:

“We have got to eliminate the gringo, and what I mean by that is if the worst comes to the worst, we have got to kill him.”

In the last election, The Democrats successfully sold the idea that Obama’s previous associations with radicals and separatists like Jeremiah Wright, and unrepentant terrorists like William Ayers was nothing at all to be concerned about. “Guilt by association,” they said.  Prior to throwing him under the campaign bus, Obama himself even claimed to have never heard any of the more inflammatory words of his pastor.  This was the man who baptized his children, a man he once called his spiritual mentor.  And, the American public, hungry for change and tired of the steady diet of negativity in the news cycle, elected a man with no experience and a  history of dubious past associations.

The Sotomayor nomination appears to be more of the same song, just a different verse.

When a judge rules based upon personal values rather than the law, then the rule of law is replaced by the rule of judicial fiat.

I do hope Senator Sessions is loaded for bear.
