from History Channel

WWII in HD is the first-ever World War II documentary presented in full, immersive HD color. Culled from thousands of hours of lost and rare color archival footage gathered from a worldwide search through basements and archives, WWII in HD will change the way the world sees this defining conflict. Using footage never before seen by most Americans–converted to HD for unprecedented clarity–viewers will experience the war as if they were actually there, surrounded by the real sights and sounds of the battlefields. Along the way they’ll meet a diverse group of soldiers whose wartime diaries and journals show in visceral detail what the war was really like.

This visually astonishing landmark series presents the story of World War II through the eyes of 12 Americans who experienced the war firsthand.

Narrated by Gary Sinise.

RIP, Tony Snow

from CNN…

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Former White House press secretary Tony Snow — who once told reporters “I’m a very lucky guy” — died at the age of 53 early Saturday after a second battle with cancer.

Tony Snow responds to reporters at an October 2006 White House news conference.

Snow, who had been undergoing chemotherapy treatments for a recurrence of the disease, left his White House job September 14, 2007, and joined CNN in April as a conservative commentator.

President Bush said Saturday that he and first lady Laura Bush were “deeply saddened” by Snow’s death.

“The Snow family has lost a beloved husband and father. And America has lost a devoted public servant and a man of character,” the president said in a statement.

Tony was fun to watch. His high-pitched voice took some getting used to, but he carried himself so well on camera that you didn’t notice his voice after a while.

Whether speaking for the White House, or as the original host of Fox News Sunday, Tony was always well-prepared, asking intelligent questions, and unafraid to confront the agenda-style journalists of the pack media mentality.

Tony was a breath of fresh air, and he will be missed.

WFFOT: Mid-Life Crisis?

My plans for the weekend are to:

1) Till up my garden spot: I got me a very cool front-tine tiller from the building supply store. Gotta put it together, first. The spot is picked out, well-drained, sunlight for over 1/2 the day.
2) Go by the bargain barn and pick up some used windows for my greenhouse. I’m going to go ahead and lay in the materials that I need to build it. If our house doesn’t sell in the next month, I’m going to take it off the market, and build the greenhouse here.
3) Turn the compost heap.
4) Clean out the garage.

I was telling Mrs. Nuke about my plans for becoming a backyard vegetable engineer, especially since Doc told me I have to make some serious diet and lifestyle changes, and she just smiled and started singing this song. She is somehow convinced that I’m going through a mid-life crisis, but she doesn’t seem to mind too much.

She says it’s a heckuva lot cheaper than a sports car.

This is the World Famous Friday Open Thread. A free-speech zone.

Hope and Change in the culture wars

The would-be First Lady of the 2004 election cycle was often the target of criticism for her off-the-cuff remarks on the campaign trail, and for her support of left wing advocacy groups. So much so, in fact, that The H.J. Heinz Co. sent out 50 letters to news organizations to “squash rumors circulating on the Internet and radio talk shows that it is involved with Mr. Kerry’s campaign.” [link]

In 2004, she changed her name from Teresa Heinz to Teresa Heinz Kerry during the campaign. After Kerry’s defeat, she changed her name back to Teresa Heinz, and has quietly faded back into affluent obscurity

The video below is currently being aired overseas. Is this agenda-driven advocacy or is it just clever marketing?

That it is not being run in the U.S. suggests the former. Of course, in this election cycle, I can’t imagine the DNC would knowingly allow the carefully manicured image of their candidate to be pulled into the culture wars with such a provocative commercial sponsored, at least indirectly, by the spouse of their former standard-bearer.

Despite the recent ruling by the California Supreme Court, and the resulting flood of homosexual marriages, the Religious Right has been largely silent in this election cycle. I suspect the Dems would just as soon leave a sleeping giant alone.

Danny Bonaduce won’t be charged

from AP

Danny Bonaduce won’t face charges for tossing former “Survivor” contestant Jonny Fairplay over his shoulders at an awards show.

A charge evaluation document released by the district attorney’s office Friday said there was “insufficient evidence” to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Bonaduce committed battery because Fairplay “initiated contact and acted offensively.”

Fairplay, 33, said he underwent 2 1/2 hours of dental surgery after Bonaduce tossed him over his shoulders at the Fox Reality Channel’s Really Awards last Tuesday. Fairplay landed on his face.

The evaluation worksheet said Fairplay jumped on Bonaduce, “wrapped his arms and legs around the suspect and thrust his pelvis into the suspect’s body.”

Deputy District Attorney Jeffrey Boxer wrote that Bonaduce didn’t intentionally injure Fairplay and his “actions fell within the realm of self-defense.”

Fairplay’s police report claimed the actor walked on stage uninvited and made a “derogatory statement.” Fairplay later said he was giving Bonaduce a hug, one of his signature moves as a performer.

A video of the incident captured the sound of the audience booing.

Fairplay, whose real name is Jon Dalton, appeared in the 2003 CBS reality show “Survivor: Pearl Islands.”

Bonaduce, 48, was a child star on “The Partridge Family.” He starred in the 2005 reality show “Breaking Bonaduce,” and has recently co-hosted Adam Carolla’s radio show.

Here’s the video…

Fake but Accurate™, Part deux

CBS, the network of Rathergate and Mary Mapes, has pulled another boner, and Dan Rather must be laughing from his grave.

A CBS News producer was fired and the network apologized after a Katie Couric video essay on libraries was found to be plagiarized from The Wall Street Journal.

The essay was removed from the CBS Web site and an editor’s note was posted saying the item should have credited Jeffrey Zaslow of the Journal, the network said Tuesday.

The essays are carried regularly on “Couric & Co.,” the anchor’s blog on the CBS News Web site. Couric and producers meet once a week to decide on topics and the producers write them for Couric to read on camera.

An editor for The Wall Street Journal called CBS News to point out the similarities of the April 4 notebook item to Zaslow’s article, headlined “Of the Places You’ll Go, Is the Library Still One of Them?” The pieces talk about how libraries are seen differently by children from their parents.

“We were horrified,” CBS News spokeswoman Sandra Genelius said. “It was almost verbatim.” source

Well, I’m shocked, I tell ya’. Just shocked.
By the way, Dan Rather isn’t dead yet, he just looks that way.

Gingrich the father of Anna Nicole’s Baby? — Fox News Alert

Update #4: “I told you so!”

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) – Larry Birkhead is the father of Anna Nicole Smith’s baby, according to DNA tests, and the late reality TV star’s former boyfriend emerged from a court hearing Tuesday to proclaim that his daughter would soon be home.

Update #3: “The nude photospread at the link on the first Update will prove without a doubt the fact that I am speaking truth to power.” Blogger Nuke Gingrich’s latest comments come amid charges that his “denial” of being Anna Nicole’s Baby-daddy is in fact a cynical attempt to drive up traffic at his award-winning website. “That’s just ridiculous. There is no evidence to support those charges. I cannot imagine anyone using poor Anna Nicole like that. This photospread is proof positive that I am not the father of Danielynn. Do you see me in any of those photos? I rest my case”

Update #2: “Just give me what I want, and I’ll go away.” Right Wing Blogger Nuke Gingrich has reportedly changed his mind….”I want the house in the Bahamas.”

Update: Planck’s constant has a flicker photospread of anna nicole (sans clothing) in his sidebar. [Welcome WordPress Blog of the day — thank you readers. ]

Conservative blogger Nuke Gingrich came forward today and announced that he is not the father of Anna Nicole’s baby, Danielynn Hope.

“There is absolutely no truth to the rumor”, Nuke said, “And I have no idea how the rumor started. As a matter of fact, I didn’t even know it was a rumor.”

annanic.jpgAs the looming custody battle heated up, “ Smith’s mother flew to the Bahamas on Saturday to check on the child, but the big question — the identity of the baby’s father — will be decided in a courtroom.” Source

384433538_64963497cc1.jpgNukegingrich, known for his insightful news and comment, and his dry sense of humor, wondered aloud how such a rumor could get started. “Well, after n2l got two straight Top 50 Blog of the day posts, I guess I uhmm, somebody figured they had better do something to attract the search engine bots, this being such a hot story and the cable news networks are all Nicole all the time.”

Channel 4: The Great Global Warming Swindle

The other side of the global warming story was told, at least in the UK. BBC Channel 4, long known for tackling controversial issues, has aired the documentary, “The Great Global Warming Swindle”. And here it is, courtesy of David J. Theroux.

“At the moment, there is almost a McCarthyism movement in science where the greenhouse effect is like a puritanical religion and this is dangerous.”

The Hangman Cometh!

update: welcome readers from

All Rise For The Hangman

He comes from the land of the dead.
Leaving his victims with eyes full of dread.
The crime has been done and the price will be paid.
All hell breaks loose and justice is being made.

Stretch the rope, hang it high!
Bring the sinner, he’s about to die!
God cant help you, nobody can!
Open the gates, all rise for the hangman

Condemned to be hung its the worst kind of death.
The judge has no mercy he has only wrath.
Dont look for redemption inside your psycho mind.
When the hangman is here damnation is all you’ll find.

As the rope is tight around your neck.
No need for regret no use looking back.
Your face turning red and you’re burning inside.
You’re going to hell and its a one way ride.

(HangmaN Band.)

Pondering the big news story of the day, Saddams pending and long overdue demise, I am reminded of an event I experienced in 1974 while stationed at Clark AB, in Angeles City, Republic of the Philippine Islands.

It was a sweltering day during the dry season. The SYM shared a two bedroom apartment with his best friend and their girlfriends, who were sisters. The apartment had no air conditioning, they only used fans, and it didn’t bother them much except in the middle of the afternoon when the equatorial Sun shown straight down on the corrugated metal roof.

The SYM had been sleeping, after arriving home at around 7:30a.m., from working a graveyard shift. The heat made it uncomfortable to sleep so he got up to get something cold to drink with the intent of going back to bed after making a few phone calls. He got a glass of iced tea, turned on the television and sat back in the rattan couch with two fans on high speed. There was a TV station broadcasting out of Manila, about ninety miles south, that always had a good American Western movie on at about 1p.m. The movie was very good and he had never seen it before. He became lost in the morality play, with a sleep deprived mind and personal thoughts. Then something happened that he did not expect(who could?) and it altered his perspective on where he was, how he conducted himself and just what a tyrant was capable of.

President Ferdinand Marcos declared Martial Law on 21 Sep 72 by signing Proclamation 1081. There is much info in the hyperlinks to explain what happened during this period of time and will leave it to you if you chose to read it. The main theme Marcos promoted from this ambitious political act was to create a “New Society.” As with all Martial Law states, civil courts are suspended and Military Tribunals take their place. One of the features of this period was the rapid increase of corruption, which had been present, but not as policy. The laws and their enforcement were harsh, and there are many reports of people disappearing or being “invited” to be questioned by the authorities, never to be seen alive again.

There was one young man, I can’t remember his full name and can’t find it on the net, but I remember his first name was ‘Mao,’ and he was of Chinese descent. There had always been a large Chinese population in the Philippines, as they have been master sailors and traders for many centuries. This young man was arrested and charged with the illegal production of heroin, tried by Tribunal and found guilty. I had heard about it on the radio and heard a few people mention it, but it didn’t really concern me, just more news. Many of us speculated that his real crime was not paying off the right people, enough people, or paying off enough. He was sentenced to death.

With that info, I return you to a sweaty young man sitting on a couch watching a Western movie. Suddenly, the movie was interrupted by a blank screen, then a line of soldiers marching into a courtyard with bright white adobe walls. He thought…“WTF?” Oh, it must be an advertisement for a new movie, but…that can’t be right, the soldiers are carrying M-16’s, not bolt-action rifles…WTF is this? Then a young man was escorted to the wall facing the soldiers, bound to his position and blindfolded. He still couldn’t comprehend what he was seeing, there was no audio, just the natural sounds of the scene and the sounds of some birds. The officer attending the prisoner then briskly stepped aside and in Tagalog instructions were issued, which he could partially understand, and the soldiers charged their weapons and took firing positions. The sweaty young man stood up and got closer to the TV, to try and understand what was going on. When were they going to end this movie trailer and announce the name of the movie, and when it would reach theaters? Then the order to fire was issued. Shots were fired, the prisoner slumped immediately. The attending officer walked over, issued the coup de grace and the screen went blank. The sweaty young man is really perplexed now. Why won’t they give us the details of the movie? Then a voice came on the blank screen…finally…but the short explanation sends chills through his body. “You have just witnessed the execution of Mao(something-something) for crimes against the New Society.” That was it, no further statement was issued and soon the Western resumed.

Perhaps it was because of his state of mind, the fact that he was a Military Policeman that worked with the local and national police, and the realization that this was a democratic country in suspension, that he turned the TV off and stood there in shock. These guys are serious! The image now, of the man being executed, finished off and the cold sterility of the scene had frozen him into a stunned condition. Finally, his roommate and ladies returned from shopping and they looked at him and asked what was wrong. He tried to explain what he had witnessed, but he was incoherent; he couldn’t speak as quickly as the events and thoughts were running through his mind. His roomie offered him a cold San Miguel beer, which he gladly accepted with a shaking hand.

After a little while and after some friendly chit-chat, he was able to express himself more clearly, and to grasp better where he was and what he needed to do. For the next several weeks, he was the best citizen of the world that ever existed. When he came to a stop sign he didn’t just stop, he lingered. He didn’t speed or change lanes without signaling, spit on the ground, or get drunk in public. He did nothing wrong! It’s from that moment that he determined that televising executions live are a powerful deterrent to would-be criminals, but was not something he ever wanted to witness again.

As for Saddam, a nice color print will be sufficient, for me.

Michael Irvin joins Jimmy the Greek, Al Campanis, and Kramer in the ‘Stupid Remarks’ Hall Of Fame

And there’s still no comment from ESPN…

Four games ago, Tony Romo was a nondescript backup who’d never started a game. Now fans are hanging his name in the Cowboys Ring of Honor next to deities such as Dorsett, Hayes and the aforementioned Dr. Irvin.

How did a fourth-year nobody from Eastern Illinois become a pro sensation?

“I just try to execute,” he said.

Today, one of those developments comes to fruition — everyone’s free upload space has been increased 60x from 50mb to 3,000mb. To get the same amount of space at our nearest competitor, Typepad, you’d pay at least $300 a year. Blogger only gives you 1GB. We’re doing the same thing for free.

images.jpgThat’s the kind of nice, modest explanation you’ve heard countless times. Then there is Irvin’s explanation, which you probably haven’t heard once.

“Somewhere there are some brothers. . . . (Maybe) his great, great, great, great Grandma ran over in the hood or something went down.”

That’s what Irvin said Monday on the Dan Patrick radio show. The host then asked Irvin if having black ancestry was the only way to be a great athlete.

“No, that’s not the only way, but it’s certainly one way. Great, great, great, great Grandma pulled one of them studs up outta the barn.”

It should be noted that Irvin was cackling throughout. It should also be noted that doesn’t matter.

Some things you just can’t joke about in this day and age. At least you can’t if you’re, let’s be honest here, the color of Romo’s great, great, great, great Grandma.

Jimmy the Greek, Al Campanis, you know what happened to them when they offered their views on genealogy. Michael Richards went Klansman at a comedy club last week and his diatribe was a YouTube sensation almost before he got offstage.

The Great Divide

A commenter on last night’s Glenn Beck thread gave a well-stated case for the left of center position on the issue of our times: Jihadism, and the War On Terrorism. I wanted to feature his comments in tonight’s post, and offer a few comments of my own. Actually, there has been so little good-faith conversation between left and right lately that it’s kind of different to actually discuss an issue, any issue, without running the risk of being called a bigot, racist, moron, or worse. But, as I noted on the BBC thread a couple of weeks ago, there really are liberals out there who are willing to make their cases and defend their ideas. Whether or not either side is persuadable, however is another story. Here are the comments from Scrubs and Shines:

greatdivide.jpgI saw Glenn Beck tonight, I know I should have watched a hockey game instead…

The program was full of conservative propaganda. But I do respect Beck for bringing on the good Muslim Doctor from Nevada who denounced terrorism by extremists. I’m with Beck and the good doctor on this one and agree in general, Islamic people are peaceful, loving, caring and respectful of life as is most Americans, Jews and other people’s on the planet.

The danger with Becks program is it groups up all Islamic people as suspect to commit terrorism and I know from history this is dangerous. I’ve lost count as to how many times our own Canadian goverment has apologized and paid out sums of tax payer’s compensation to identified groups that were wronged by racial profiling during wars. This has caused nothing but grief and shame in our history and yet media such as CNN and FOX continue to abuse thier ability of propagating the war.

Its preparing Americans that Iran is next to be attacked.

I’m Irish by the way, I abhor hate promoting as I witnessed on the first half of Beck ( Neo Consevatism and radical Muslims nut jobs alike) They both promoted hate and the media have done its job at exposing America to the new enemy of freedom. Russians, Japanese, Iraqi’s, German’s have all been victimized by this racial profiling before the battles.

I noticed 30 minutes of Glenn Beck and 30 minutes of commercials paying big bucks into the bank vaults of CNN, thats a religion on its own called capitalism and they too have agenda.

One strange thing last night was I also noticed that a 10 second portion of Becks show was sensored and blacked out with a sign of numbers and letters saying “Blocked” on my TV screen. This may have been by our local cable company or perhaps our CRTC here in Canada. Wow that sucks.

Wish they block out South Park.

I don’t watch South Park, and the only time I can remember TV censorship happened when I was a kid. Growing up in a “dry” state, it was illegal for the local TV stations to run ads for wine and liquor. So, whenever one of the offending ads came on the network, the local stations had to move quickly to block them.

I actually thought Beck went out of his way to let people know that he was not characterizing all Muslims as potential terrorists. What was unique about his program, was that this was one of the very few times since 9/11 that the actual words of the imams have been broadcast. Actual footage of ME television, and the story of the willful propagandizing of generations of muslim children was shown to the American/Western public. Very little of the footage was new to the right blogosphere. We’ve been pounding the keys about this for years. MEMRI has been a source of information demonstrating the duplicity of ME political and religious leaders, and the amount of information shown on Beck’s program was “preaching to the choir” for many of us. The program was aimed at the public at large, and to people like Scrubs and Shines, whose characterization of this as “hate promoting” “conservative propaganda” from neoconservative nutjobs is disheartening, but not unexpected.

That anyone raised in the West can view these images and come away with this conclusion suggests someone with a preconceived judgement, who watched the program simply to confirm what they already believed.

There is one major difference between those of us who see the Jihaddist threat as a clear and present danger, and those who see the events of the past six years as a series of interconnected acts within the same conspiratorial drama.

We can show you the actual people, in their own words, and by their own deeds, planning for the destruction and subjugation of Western Civilization. The evidence you offer to support your contentions are convincing only to those who are willing to believe the absolute worst about the Republican party. Your side (yes, I realize Scrubs is from Canada) gets bent out of shape for someone “questioning their patriotism”, but to believe the 9/11 conspiracy theories is to question the basic humanity of Republicans. It offends me.

One last note, as far CNN broadcasting Beck’s show as a way of preparing the public for an attack on Iran, I wonder if the commenter believes that an attack by Iran on Israel would be preferable? How many times does someone have to tell you that they are going to destroy you before you believe finally them? I hope it is not necessary to attack Iran. I truly do. But with every statement out of the mouth of the Iranian President that Israel will be wiped off the face of the map, I wonder how long we will be willing to wait.
