19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
Sharks are about as useful as rats, but they are far more entertaining.
I’ll never forget a visit I made to Manila back in 1974. The huge open market was buzzing with the knowledge that an enormous great white shark had been caught and was being brought to the market.
The crowd was huge and most were eagerly waiting for a chance to buy some of the meat. As the shark was hoisted up by its tail the enormity of the fish was amazing. Then a man stepped up with a sharp knife and gutted it. The contents of its stomach came flooding out, including obvious remnants of a human.
The crowd gasped and quickly dispersed. I don’t know if they sold any of that meat that day.
Was watching last night’s broadcast of the Barrett-Jackson Classic Car auction on Speed channel. Saturday night of the nearly week long event is known as “Super Saturday,” as that is the night when the truly remarkable collector cars cross the auction block.
In the fifteen years I have been watching this auction, I have seen some amazing automobiles cross the stage, cars, boats, buses and trucks, but never have I seen a spectacle like the BatMobile auction. They had difficulty getting it on stage, as the throng of people hovering around it was massive.
This was the original, created by hot rod customizer legend George Barris in only a few weeks back in 1966 and this model has remained in his possession all this time. Created from a concept car by Lincoln, called the Futura, this car is more than iconic, it became the star of the campy television show with Adam West.
The gentleman that had the winning bid claims he will knock out a wall and park the BatMobile in his living room.
Congratulations to the entertaining George Barris for tying the record sale with the James Bond DB9 from a few years ago. George is a one of a kind character and he got so excited speaking to the audience that his dentures nearly popped out a few times.
One aspect of this auction that my brother and I always look for is how strong the money is for the cars in this auction and how it is an indicator for the economy. I am happy to report that the crowds were HUGE every day and night, enthusiasm was high and the money was exceptionally strong.
I would also like to mention that President W’s F-150 pickup truck, which he drove on his ranch in Crawford, Texas, was auctioned off for the Fisher House charity for $300,000 by Jay Leno.
If you didn’t see it, here is a fan posted video that doesn’t really do the event justice, but until a better video from the broadcast is available, a fair presentation can be found on the video.
Today, 16 Aug, is the date in 1977 that Elvis left this mortal coil.
I was in my early twenties, headed into Texas City with my best and oldest friend. We got together after work, loaded up his old International Harvester SUV “The Goose” and were bound for an inlet to Galveston Bay for some crabbing. My best bud, a pharmacist, had grown up a fisherman and sportsman, as had I. I was a student at UT-Austin, working a summer job in Houston as a painter’s helper on the Galleria II project.
As we were rolling into Texas City and turning off IH-45, the announcer on the big Houston rock’n’roll radio station stated, with a somber tone, “The King Is Dead.” Being in a party mode since leaving Houston, we looked at each other with blood shot eyes and went…whaaaa? I said, seriously, who cares about the monarchy? Then the announcer stated it was Elvis who had died of congestive heart failure. That new information clue-batted us and we both expressed our shock and disbelief.
Elvis had been a part of our lives since we were toddlers. My parents would drop us boys off at my grandparent’s farm on Saturday afternoon and go into Shreveport to have dinner, then go see this new singing sensation at the Louisiana Hayride, a young man named Elvis. Of course my grandparent’s didn’t approve of this new “devil” music, no more than my parents approved of my Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin music, years later.
I can remember, even though I was only about four at the time, being scooped up and loaded in my Dad’s Buick Special for the midnight ride home, trying to understand where my parents had been and asking questions.
Years went by, I heard all of his songs and saw all of his movies(silly as most were), but it was Elvis, no one else looked like him or acted like him. In the late sixties his star was waning and his Las Vegas era replaced the hit making young hip shaker. I was now into hard rock and paid little attention to his now faded glory.
But on this day, when I discovered he had passed away far too early, his impact on my life came flooding back with many memories.
*PS* Elvis’ spirit was with my bud and I that afternoon and evening, we filled two large ice chests with huge blue shell crabs and made it home safely without injury or a DWI.
On behalf of this country, I think it’s appropriate to apologize to … muslims?
Huh?
Mike Quigley, Chicago democrat presumes that he should speak for this nation (around the 2:15 mark — h/t Rebel Pundit) in his speech to a group of muslim students in Chicago.
Mike Quigley has made his choice.
Atta boy Mikey.
Maybe they’ll kill you last. You dumbfuck. And, I think it’s appropriate to apologize to dumfucks everywhere for including you in their group.
I began to learn a little about Marco Rubio during the 2008 Florida Primary, when as an influential state legislator, Rubio endorsed Mike Huckabee for President. The more I got to know about Rubio, the more impressed I became.
I also recall a good interview of Rubio by K-Lo over at NRO, shortly before Rick Santelli’s famous rant on CNBC. That rant gave rise to the tea party movement.
Maybe Rubio was just the right guy at the right time. But, not long after that, the groundswell for a Marco Rubio candidacy to oppose the “inevitable” nomination of Charlie Crist began to grow.
Last night’s victory speech for Senator-elect Rubio was outstanding. It is a real pleasure to present it to you.
“CBS reporters in the affiliate up there in Alaska, on tape are saying let’s find a child molester in the crowd as a supporter for Joe Miller, let’s blast that. Let’s concoct a [Rand] Paul moment there, let’s find any kind of chaos so that we can tweet an alert saying “ooh, there’s chaos. Joe Miller got punched, or vice [versa].” That’s sick. Those are corrupt bastards, Chris.” … Sarah Palin: 10/31/10 Fox News Sunday
The Miller campaign blasted out an e-mail overnight containing a transcript and audio recording of what it claimed were reporters at CBS affiliate KTVA discussing story ideas. The conversation, according to the Miller campaign, was recorded on spokesman Randy DeSoto’s voicemail apparently by accident after an assignment editor with the station called him and mistakenly left his phone on instead of hanging up.
KTVA confirmed the authenticity of the tape Sunday but rejected as “absurd” the suggestion that reporters were trying to “fabricate” a negative story about Miller.link
Oh. Well, naturally.
No longer content with being “fake but accurate,” CBS has now become “accurate but untrue.”
