WFFOT: Linkage edition

The Friday Edition:  Stories I’m following ………

Here are two stories that seem to go together quite well. ROPMA.

The U.N. Human Rights Council approved a proposal backed by Muslim nations Thursday urging the passage of laws around the world protecting religion from criticism. Link

A TEENAGE girl was burned to death at her home in India in an “honour killing” by neighbours.

Four residents of her village in Ghaziabad, north India, allegedly set the 16-year-old Muslim girl alight after they suspected her of having a relationship with a boy.  Police claim residents kept a vigil on her house as they noticed the boy visited her frequently when her father was away. The four men then beat her, doused her with kerosene and set her on fire. Link

Vietnam vet unveils new project to honor the fallen …  Here’s an example …  Link

“‘Dear Dad, I’m sorry it took so long but when you went away I was 8 years old and I couldn’t understand why you never came back to us. I’m now 35 and I can understand now as I have fought in two wars myself. It’s not much fun, it it? You might like to know that you have three grandchildren, two girls and a boy, and they all know about you. It meant a lot to me to see your name on The Wall with all the others. Your loving son, Paul.'”

———

More unveiling … Obama unveils his “stronger, smarter” strategy for Afghanistan. Let’s just hope that is is better than the wicked-smart surrender strategy for Iraq that launched his presidential campaign.

“I want the American people to understand that we have a clear and focused goal: to disrupt, dismantle and defeat the Taleban and al-Qaeda.”

———-

Michelle Malkin reports a “curious” departure from Treasury …

The acting director of the Office of Thrift Supervision has been put on leave pending a review of the agency’s role in the backdating of capital infusions by some banks, the agency said Thursday evening.

OTS said in a surprise statement that Scott Polakoff, who has been serving as acting director of the OTS, would be replaced by OTS Chief Counsel John Bowman during the review by the Treasury Department.

———-

I watched the news footage of the Red River flooding this morning.    Man against nature, no contest. Nature wins.

Residents in this city of 92,000 had been scrambling in subfreezing temperatures to pile sandbags along the river and spent much of Thursday preparing for a crest of 41 feet, only to have forecasters late in the day add up to 2 feet to their estimate.

The National Weather Service said in its follow-up statement that the Red was expected to crest between 41 and 42 feet by Saturday, but could reach 43 feet. It said water levels could remain high for three days to a week.

The first estimate sparked urgency among thousands of volunteers in Fargo. The second shook their spirits.

———-

Look up “stupid” in the dictionary. If there’s not a picture of Michael Vick, then there ought to be …

CNBC reports that “The U.S. Department of Labor filed complaints Wednesday accusing suspended NFL star Michael Vick of illegally spending about $1.3 million in pension plan funds for his own benefit, including paying restitution ordered in his dog-fighting conspiracy case.”

The Labor Department accuses Vick of illegally transferring money out of the pension plan for MV7, his marketing company that covered nine current and former employees.

———-

Have you seen the video of Daniel Hannan? He’s the member of Parliament who gave a major B-slap to PM Gordon Brown.  Here is the Link.

———-

Oh, You want that stamp on your face or on your hand? Link

US Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner shocked global markets by revealing that Washington is “quite open” to Chinese proposals for the gradual development of a global reserve currency run by the International Monetary Fund.

Bus tour of AIG homes by ACORN front group

Brian Lockhart, writing at The Advocate

Just got a press release a little while ago that the Working Families Party has scheduled “a fun, goofy AIG protest” for Saturday that entails chartering a bus to take activists on tours of some employee homes in lower Fairfield County.

“Then we’ll be finishing the tour with a rally at the AIG Financial Products offices (in Wilton),” reads the release.

I don’t know. There’s something about this that just seems a bit … off to me, like it’s inviting potential threats or harm to these people.

Of course it is.

It is radical left-wing  populism run amok, and  ACORN is the worst of the worst.

Their modus operandi is to openly flout the rule of law, and then dare anyone who might try to hold them accountable with threats of loud, angry, potentially violent, and (of course) televised protests, all the while claiming the protected and privileged mantle of victimhood.

Balderdash.

ACORN is nothing more than a well-funded effort to strip away the Bill of Rights.

They must be stopped.  Yes we can.

Police release photo of arson suspect

Victorian police have released a composite photo of a man wanted for questioning over the Australian brush fires that killed at least 181 people and which authorities suspect may have been started by arsonists.

australian-arson-suspectPolice gave warning that the death toll from the fires that ravaged Victoria state last weekend could exceed 200 as fire fighters continue to battle 30 blazes across the state.

The man in the composite photo, who police say is in his early 20s and has a dark complexion, is believed to have information about a suspicious fire at Ivanhoe East, in Melbourne’s north-east.

He was apparently seen in the area wearing black trousers, a polo shirt and yellow sunglasses and carrying a black rucksack.

Arson investigators are looking into several of the bush fires that destroyed more than 1,000 homes. The fire that wiped out the town of Marysville and claimed up to 100 lives has been classed as suspicious.

Obama moves toward trade war with China

President Obama’s Treasury Secretary nominee, Tim Geithner made statement today which will most certainly catch the attention of China. In a written response to questions submitted at his confirmation hearing, Geithner accused the Chinese government of currency manipulation.

“President Obama — backed by the conclusions of a broad range of economists — believes that China is manipulating its currency,” … {snip}
As an Illinois senator, Obama had co-sponsored legislation aimed at changing how the US government formally determines currency manipulation and authorizes new trade reprisal measures.

During the presidential campaign, he had accused China of suppressing its currency’s true strength to make its exports more competitive, echoing some US lawmakers who blamed the snowballing US trade deficit with China on the weak yuan and have sought sanctions against Beijing. AFP

This is a serious and fundamental policy shift, signaling a move against the Chinese. It is one that will have consequences, both seen and unforeseen. We can expect higher prices for imported goods, and a reduction in trade as China retaliates. We can expect fewer bond purchases by China which will drive bond prices down and boost yields – which, eventually, would cause borrowing costs for residential and some corporate customers to increase. The unforeseen consequences may actually make deflation more of a problem instead of less, as deleveraging and the unwinding of debt continues to impair corporate balance sheets.

I’ve got a bad feeling about this. I think we may have just passed a mile marker of some kind. The serious recession that we have endured for the last year may have just shifted into a 30’s style depression, fueled by bumbling politicians and an unnecessary trade war.

UBS to close accounts

The Patriot Act could claim thousands of scalps in the coming weeks as Swiss banking giant UBS has announced that it will close some 19,000 accounts of their American clientele. From the NYT

In a step that would have once been unthinkable in the rarefied world of Swiss banking, UBS will shut about 19,000 accounts that prosecutors suspect have gone undeclared to the Internal Revenue Service.

UBS will transfer the assets to other banks or other divisions within UBS, or will mail checks directly to the account holders, creating paper trails for federal prosecutors who are examining whether UBS clients used such accounts to evade taxes.

The clients now face stark choices: they can cash their checks, and thereby alert the authorities to any potential wrongdoing, or not cash them, effectively losing their money.

Or they can transfer the money to new banks, a procedure which, in the case of foreign banks, requires depositors of more than $10,000 to report the new account to the Treasury Department.

“You can either take that check and throw it in the woods, or deposit it somewhere and get busted,” said a UBS client, who asked not to be named because of the investigations into UBS and its clients. “There’s nowhere to hide.” …

But because prosecutors claim that some UBS clients failed to make adequate disclosures in the past or lied on their tax returns about holding offshore accounts, the authorities may view the new disclosures as criminal evidence, not just of tax evasion but also of money laundering, a more serious offense.

Indeed. Money Laundering is very, very serious.

It seems like the law that was designed to starve islamic terrorists of the money to finance their operations will be used to sock it to wealthy Americans who have evaded income taxes. Although the list of names that will surface will be interesting to see, the actions by UBS reveal the need for junking the tax code and replacing it with the Fair Tax.

FRIDAY LINKAGE:

Malls, hotels next victims in new mortgage crisis — The full scope of the housing meltdown isn’t clear and already there are ominous signs of a new crisis — one that could turn out the lights on malls, hotels and storefronts nationwide.

The Hedge Fund Collapse — As many as half the funds that existed earlier this year, when the industry topped out at 10,000 funds in business, could fail or be wound up in a year’s time, industry watchers estimate. Assets under management at hedge funds are falling as investors rush to pull money out of good funds and bad. In September, investors took out an estimated $41 billion from the sector, the largest monthly outflow of money since experts began tracking numbers. October looked even worse.

“Something is happening of historic proportions” — I think there is something monumentally large afoot, and I do not believe it is just a banking crisis, or a mortgage crisis, or a credit crisis. Yes these exist, but they are merely single facets on a very large gemstone that is only now coming into a sharper focus.

Something of historic proportions is happening. I can sense it because I know how it feels, smells, what it looks like, and how people react to it. Yes, a perfect storm may be brewing, but there is something happening within our country that has been evolving for about ten – fifteen years. The pace has dramatically quickened in the past two.

What this depression could look like — look back 135 years the current economic woes look a lot like what my 96-year-old grandmother still calls “the real Great Depression.” She pinched pennies in the 1930s, but she says that times were not nearly so bad as the depression her grandparents went through. That crash came in 1873 and lasted more than four years. It looks much more like our current crisis.

Government bailout hits $8.5 trillion:
— The federal government committed an additional $800 billion to two new loan programs on Tuesday, bringing its cumulative commitment to financial rescue initiatives to a staggering $8.5 trillion, according to Bloomberg News.

That sum represents almost 60 percent of the nation’s estimated gross domestic product.

Citi says price of gold could go over $2000 next year — The bank said the damage caused by the financial excesses of the last quarter century was forcing the world’s authorities to take steps that had never been tried before.

This gamble was likely to end in one of two extreme ways: with either a resurgence of inflation; or a downward spiral into depression, civil disorder, and possibly wars. Both outcomes will cause a rush for gold.

Obama the criminal

A couple of interesting articles for your reading pleasure. They should both cause a disturbance in the force, that is if they are not drowned out by the Lehman derivative settlements.

Speaking of which, I’m still wondering where our financial institutions are going to come up with the $350 Billion needed to settle Lehman. OK, I’m not really wondering. In fact, I think we will see the nationalization of the banking industry (at least temporarily) wihin a week’s time. After trillions of wealth have evaporated in the equity markets, and more bailout money yet to come, I’m thinking the Treasury royally screwed the pooch by letting Lehman fail. (Update 10:40 am: we’ve got a mark on Lehman, brings total close to $375 billion)  (update2 9:00 pmTimes UK puts it at $365 billion)

First up is from the Wash Times, “Obama tried to sway Iraqis on Bush deal”

At the same time the Bush administration was negotiating a still elusive agreement to keep the U.S. military in Iraq, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama tried to convince Iraqi leaders in private conversations that the president shouldn’t be allowed to enact the deal without congressional approval.

Mr. Obama’s conversations with the Iraqi leaders, confirmed to The Washington Times by his campaign aides, began just two weeks after he clinched the Democratic presidential nomination in June and stirred controversy over the appropriateness of a White House candidate’s contacts with foreign governments while the sitting president is conducting a war.

And more on the Acorn connection. Seems like the Obamahdi “forgot” to report the $800,000 donation to the Fraudsters at Acorn…

U.S. Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign paid more than $800,000 to an offshoot of the liberal Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now for services the Democrat’s campaign says it mistakenly misrepresented in federal reports.

An Obama spokesman said Federal Election Commission reports would be amended to show Citizens Services Inc. — a subsidiary of ACORN — worked in “get-out-the-vote” projects, instead of activities such as polling, advance work and staging major events as stated in FEC finance reports filed during the primary.

Crooked bastids. Lock ’em up.

Bailout Bill to Nowhere: Why we’re still not out of the woods

The $700+ billion bailout bill has passed through Congress and been signed by the President. The debate, the stock market volatility, and the lack of cogent reporting of events has left many of us wondering what in the world we have just witnessed.

MM calls it “Crap Sandwich 2.0.” In fact, she live-blogged the House debate.

While our government pats itself on the back for avoiding financial Armageddon, I wonder if they realize that the drama of the past few weeks is only the first layer to be peeled from this onion.

The next layer will begin to be pulled away next Monday, as settlement of credit derivative trades involving Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are unwound.

On Friday, the Lehman auction is scheduled.  WaMu follows one week later.  That is, if anyone is left standing.

How many billions will have to come off the balance sheets at settlement? As interesting and unsettling as the past few weeks have been, we haven’t seen anything yet.

Hoping for Change? Part 2

More interesting polling results from… Gallup

The positive impact of the GOP convention on polling indicators of Republican strength is further seen in the operation of Gallup’s “likely voter” model in this survey. Republicans, who are now much more enthused about the 2008 election than they were prior to the convention, show heightened interest in voting, and thus outscore Democrats in apparent likelihood to vote in November. As a result, Republican candidates now lead Democratic candidates among likely voters by 5 percentage points, 50% to 45%

As recently as one month ago, the conventional wisdom was that “this will be a Democrat year,” with increasing majorities in the House and Senate, and a climactic coronation of Obamessiah.

This is no longer a slam dunk. In fact, this polling data suggests just the opposite may be true.

Works for me.

It must lose something in the translation

Webster’s on-line dictionary offers the following definition of the word “rational”

\ˈrash-nəl, ˈra-shə-nəl\,adjective, Etymology:Middle English racional, from Anglo-French racionel, from Latin rationalis, from ration-, ratio

1 a: having reason or understanding b: relating to, based on, or agreeable to reason : reasonable <a rational explanation> <rational behavior>

Perhaps it just my American-centric point of view that leads me toward having a positive feeling about rational behavior. Rational behavior, I would normally suspect, is a good thing. So, imagine my surprise at the following headline from The Times (UK): “Josef Stalin acted rationally in killing millions, claims Russian textbook”

The book, A History of Russia, 1900-1945, will be used as a teaching guide in Russian schools, 55 years after Stalin died.

It is designed for teachers to promote patriotism among the Russian young, and seems to follow an attempt backed by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to re-evaluate Stalin’s record in a more positive light.

Historians believe up to 20 million people died as a result of his actions, many times more than were killed under Hitler’s Nazi regime in Germany.

Here is a direct quote from the texbook: “He acted entirely rationally – as the guardian of a system, as a consistent support of reshaping the country into an industrialised state.”

Mass Murder is rational. Who knew?

Zot Media — Denver cyanide connection?

I received an email today from Vimto, regarding the comments made at Zot Media by one Abdirahman Dirie.

As you may know, a Somali immigrant from Canada by the same name was found dead in Denver, in possession of enough cyanide to kill hundreds.

So, here is the breaking news: At the request of The Jawa Report, I asked Vimto to help us by revealing the IP address of the commenter on his blog, who wrote,

“Please don’t talk shit , that man deserves what happened to him , simply because having the bible in one hand , and a bread in the other hand , is not a correct thing ,! Kill Them , Kill them , Kill them , that is my massage,!” Comment by Abdirahman Dirie — July 11, 2008 @ 10:33 pm

OK all you internet sleuths, the IP address 193.251.135.88.
