Team’s gesture supports grieving opponent

With all the cruddy news of the day, this story made me smile. …..

Two missed free throws, ordinarily the cause of a coach’s headache, became the symbol of sportsmanship in a Milwaukee boys basketball game earlier this month.

Milwaukee Madison senior Johntell Franklin, who lost his mother, Carlitha, to cancer on Saturday, Feb. 7, decided he wanted to play in that night’s game against DeKalb (Ill.) High School after previously indicating he would sit out.

He arrived at the gym in the second quarter, but Franklin’s name was not in the scorebook because his coach, Aaron Womack Jr., didn’t expect him to be there.

Rules dictated Womack would have to be assessed a technical, but he was prepared to put Franklin in the game anyway. DeKalb coach Dave Rohlman and his players knew of the situation, and told the referees they did not want the call.

The referees had no choice. But Rohlman did.

World Famous Friday Open Pickle Thread

Today’s WFFOT pays homage to culinary wizardry of the Speedshop Deli, creator of the World Famous “Nuke Gingrich” Pickle, located in Bend, Oregon (recently admitted to the Free State of Jefferson).

It is especially apropos today, as Nuke’s alma mater, the Mississippi State Bulldogs tangle with the Oregon Ducks this evening in the NCAA’s.

Since I didn’t see it on the Speedshop menu, I’ll offer this recipe for some tasty “Duck Soup” in honor of our opponent in this evening’s contest in Little Rock.

Ingredients: * 2 to 3 wild ducks, * 1 package of crab and shrimp boil or bottle, * 2 cups garlic butter
Directions: 1 Boil ducks in large pot with crab and shrimp boil for one hour, sticking fork in ducks to allow the shrimp boil to penetrate meat. 2. After boiling, put duck into oven at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. 3 Baste with garlic butter while cooking…
